Default Volkswagen India rolls out 1,00,000th car from Chakan plant! EDIT: LHD Exports Begin

Volkswagen rolled out the 100,000th car from its Chakan plant in Pune yesterday.

Production started in May 2009 with the Skoda Fabia followed by the Polo, Vento and the Fabia facelift. Next year a car smaller than Polo alongside the Skoda Rapid are likely to be made in Chakan.

Skoda and VW brand models are manufactured at Chakan. Assembly of Jetta, Laura, Passat, Superb and Yeti take place at another VW Group plant in Aurangabad.

The Chakan plant can manufacture 130,000 cars in a year at full capacity and it was constructed in just 17 months (private residences have taken longer to come up) with an investment commitment of 3,800 crore rupees. The investment is the largest to date by a German company in India.

What one of the reports also state is that the Mahrashtra Govt has gone back on certain promises made on VAT which has impacted sales of VW ( alongwith GM, Fiat, etc ) in June and they are expecting the govt to sort it out within a couple of weeks !

Congrats Team - Volkswagen India.
However, I came to know its almost a week back incident.

But still, setting up a plant in 17 months flat is a commendable task to achieve.
I have seen nano's plant in Ahemdabad commissioned from scratch in flat 14 months with a patent on their planning procedure.
This is the second fastest IMHO in India.

Awaiting more models from their stable along with an increase in their after sales service cetnres.

Seems they will be able to acheive their target of 15% share even before 2015 (or 2020, I don't remember exactly)

Wish you Good Luck.

Which means the journey from 100K to 200K will be even faster! Maybe within 2012-end.

Going by the strong numbers Polo and Vento have already started to register, coupled with the Skoda sales, this shouldn't be a problem. Also in the wings - a face-lifted Polo with steering mounted controls, a smaller-than-Polo car on the lines of the Up!, etc. - things are looking very, very promising for VW's future.

How can it be a week back incident when the pic clearly says "8th July, 2011"?

Hence posted the same.

Ahh, that clears it. Great to know you know one of the senior management people in the company - it's like having a direct connection to one of VW's veins. They must be one proud lot right now.

Thanks for clarifying!

Default VW’s export LHD Vento production starts at Chakan plant

As India continues to thrive as manufacturing hubs for export products for major car manufacturers, news had emerged from Volkswagen Group India’s Chakan plant that the company has started production of the left-hand drive (LHD) version of its Vento model for export to Middle East and African Countries.

Incidentally, the first LHD car, a white Vento, was also the landmark 200,000th car produced at the Chakan plant. The export is planned to start from the second half of 2012.

The Vento’s success in a competitive market like India has apparently spurred Volkswagen’s ambition to export the car to similar markets abroad. The sedan has also been successfully exported to South Africa since last year. Volkswagen is increasingly looking at India to produce quality cars at highly competitive costs, especially for exports.

The on-going strategy of the Volkswagen Group as stated by the company is to continue focussing on India while using exports to handle volatilities in the domestic automotive market and the rupee.

The Volkswagen plant in Chakan currently produces the Volkswagen Polo, the Volkswagen Vento, the ŠKODA Fabia and the ŠKODA Rapid.

Default VW to export made in India Vento to Mexico

Name: Volkswagen India expands its export activities_ Volkswagen Vento will now be sold in Mexico.jpg

Volkswagen India will now export the made in India left-hand drive Vento sedan to Mexico. The Volkswagen Vento manufactured at Volkswagen India's Pune plant will now be exported to three continents and Mexico will become the single largest export market for Volkswagen India with every second car produced for exports at the Pune Plant being sold there. Previously, the made in India Vento was sold in two continents - Asia and Africa, and now it will be seen on the streets of a third continent – North America.

Volkswagen India began the export production at its Pune Plant in 2011 with the export to South Africa and entered the Left-Hand Drive market in 2012 with the export to Middle East countries.
The production of Left-Hand Drive Vento cars for the Mexican market has already started and the first lot of cars have already reached there. The official market introduction of this model in Mexico will happen during November 2013. The Vento will be offered in the Mexican market in three drivetrain options.

“The Vento was specifically designed and built for Indian customers. However its success in a competitive market like India has opened up doors for exporting this car to various other markets,” said Mr. Mahesh Kodumudi, President & Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited. “Expanding the exports to new and demanding markets is a testimony to the high quality and standards of manufacturing followed at our plant. Mexico will be an extremely important market for us as every second export car manufactured at the Pune Plant will be destined for Mexico,” he added.

Volkswagen Pune's production facility currently manufactures the Volkswagen Polo, the Volkswagen Vento, the ŠKODA Fabia and the ŠKODA Rapid. Exports from the Pune plant include the right-hand drive Volkswagen Polo along with the right and left-hand drive Volkswagen Vento.

Anyway VW India's market share is not at all showing any upward movement. So it is natural for Germans to hunt for new markets like this one to keep their Indian plant running.
