I voted "Others" and in this price sensitive market it would be budget or the price of the car.

Voted for Reliability . The single largest reason I'm inclined towards Japanese cars. A lesser "involving to drive" car is fine by me if it is consistent in its behavior.

For me it's a combination of Engine and Handling, because these are the two factors that ultimately determine how 'fun' to drive a car is.

For me, the most important aspect of a car is how FUN it is.

I don't need a car to commute, I'll use public transportation. I don't need it to be a status symbol. I don't need fancy features.

What I wan't is a very fast, fun, overblown toy .

From this you can guess, my favourite cars include Suzuki Swifts, Honda Civics, Skoda Lauras, the old Ford Fiesta 1.6 and the BMW 320D.

Its the heart of the car! The engine, attracted me towards the Scorp. Its a gem.

Ride/handling/looks etc are all secondary. Something like choosing a girl

OT : No wonder they have been selling 4K odd cars, in the past one year or so.

Just voted for reliability. Don't want to spend more time at the service centers instead of on/off road.

Engine just like a Human Heart, runs the blood lines for the car and is what is imp. to me. All other things mentioned in the poll though imp., they can work around it.

"Handling" is what is choose for cause without good handling all the power made by the engine is not put to good use.

As we know we can bump up the power of many cars with minimal mods though

Four years back, when I was hunting for our first car; I went for a TD of Petrol Swift; and drove the DDIS instead. When the DDIS went past 2000RPM, the deal was instantly sealed. (Honestly looked at nothing else)

I voted for the Engine.

Which parameter is most important ? It may vary from person to person. But for me the one and only deal maker is :

RELIABILITY.

I work irregular hours since I handle 3 different locations across 3 time zones. Managing a family and a demanding career means I can spare little / no time to keep dragging my car to service stations every other day. A reliable vehicle ensures peace of mind while commuting on lonely stretches of road.

But all said and done, it does not mean that I can be absolved of my responsibility to ensure that my vehicle is well maintained and looked after at all times.

It's always been, and always will be the engine.

But... I've come to realize that resale value is pretty much up there as well. I swap cars every five years or so, and having a car with a good resale value is important because it goes a long way toward funding your next ride.

Also, if your current ride's got good resale value, it automatically implies that the maintenance costs are low and the after-sales support is pretty good. Indians will not place much value on a car that lacks in these two aspects.

My approach will always be:
1. Does the car have a stonking good engine?
2. If yes, then let's take a look at the resale value.

I voted for reliability. That is the one deal maker for me primarily because when I go on my long drives, or even during my daily commute I need to be confident that arriving at my destination is the least of my worries.

Please remove reliability from the poll.
Things are expected to be reliable, let it be TV, clothes, software, cars or planes, mobile network.
People will prefer reliable M800 to un reliable Merc.
People prefer reliable state transport to un reliable private operators.

For me, its the tall boy design. (Perhaps this can be put as the polling criteria if required/possible).

Looking at the state of NCR's roads, Reliability of-course, followed by Build Quality-refinement and a frugal diesel engine.

I guess it should have one more option for choice : Diesel

With so many price increase in the Petrol prices, many people are asking for if it is a diesel or not. What average it gives. All has agreed that modern diesel engines are way too economical than petrol. They are better than CNG / LPG as well. I know few people / friends who bought diesel cars as they are very affordable.

For me, reliability, Safety, Build Quality are all taken for granted, i mean i expect the car makers to take care of these.

In my early 20's the only deal-maker for me was the engine. Today it is comfort. Definitely Equipment.
