Thumbs up Fiat Linea 2013 - Spy Shot

Fiat Linea 2013 Spy Shot Emerge– Launch In Detroit In January 2012

Fiat Linea has been a very good handler in its segment and is known for its styling, good interiors and features. For a long time, about 5 years, it has rules many roads and many hearts. There has been no major facelifts of new models of the Fiat Linea in these years. But the time has finally comes, for the Fiat Linea to enter a new generation with a newer model. Recently, a picture has leaked from a European magazine which shows the styling of the new Fiat Linea sedan. The new Fiat Linea 2013 will be unveiled globally at the Detroit Auto Show in USA in January 2012.

The Fiat Linea 2013 is somewhat similar in the side profile to its old generation or existing model of Linea, but it gets an entirely new fascia, the front bumper, headlamps, chrome grille, bonnet, fog lamps etc. are all new in styling. It gets a very sleek and sporty front look with new alloy wheel. The front windshield also appears to have become larger and merges smoothly with the roof of the car.

The side profile is smooth and aerodynamic, the car looks slightly sloping towards front in profile adding good low center of gravity and large interior space and luggage space just like the existing Linea. The Engine of the new Linea is expected to be the latest lineup of award winning Fiat Multi-Air Engine which is capable of producing whooping power of 170 PS and 250 Nm of Torque with just 1.4 Litre of Engine displacement. Along with high power, these engines are lower on emission and better on fuel economy.

Aargh..!!
The current generation Linea is such a beautiful car. Just like a beautiful girl.

The face of this one looks like a face of a technologically advanced robot.
Please Fiat don't do this.!

However the new engine sounds promising. Any clue/link as to understand the working of this MultiAir engine??

Will FIAT be sharing the engine with the ones they share now?? (Suzuki, TATA)

The current gen Linea is infinitely more classy and European. This looks more like a quirky Korean. More Hyundai than Fiat actually. However, replacing the MJD in India seems too distant to materialize given how much acceptance it has garnered amongst both manufacturers and buyers.

What exactly is Multi Air engine? Is it the same turbo charged Turbo charged motor with a different name and different torque/power ratings ?
I would like to know more if there are any breakthrough technologies incorporated in Multi Air engine.

What ever it may look like Korean/Japaneese etc, I am not bothered. This car looks stunning.

I feel the older Linea has a special grace and style to it that set it apart from the numerous aggressively designed sedans plying our roads.

@Fiat: Fix your ***. That is all that is needed.

It's a boy !!. The current Linea is a girl, beautiful to look at. Would hate to see current model go. This also means Linea will be getting new interiors.

Current generation linea is based on punto, If i am correct. Next generation Punto and Linea seem to be disctinct with no visual similarity.

While the current model is more classy, this upcoming model seems to have traits of Hyundai. Anyhow it is looking awesome.

It is very soon to dream about this machine which has atleast 1 more year for its launch.

Quite a radical design, ain't it?

The elegance of the Italians has been replaced by the butch look; somehow I don't see this coming to India. The design is just too loud.

Current one has a classic look of a Rolex written all over it. Minimal and elegant. I do not think that this is the new look. Might be just a rumor.
This one is more like a Casio do-it-all watch.
I do not like it.

Fiat has introduced a new technology that should revolutionize the way petrol engines might work in the future:

In the beginning of July 2010, Italian manufacturer Fiat announced a premiere for the European market: the 900cc, two cylinder gasoline engine. Fitted, for now, onto the Fiat 500, the tiny powerplant is supposed to be a game changing technology, one which takes the downsizing trend in the automotive industry to a whole new level.

Fiat plans to fit the unit into several other upcoming models in the near future. Until then, however, we thought you'd like a closer look into the technologies which allow such a small engine to develop if not more, that at least as much power as much bigger engines available in Europe.

THE TECHNOLOGY

TwinAir takes its name from Fiat Powertrain Technologies' (FTP) MultiAir technology. It basically ensures air control in spark ignition engines without using the throttle valve. Air, as you know, is one of the main ingredients needed by an engine to run. In conventional engines, the volume and pressure of the air in the cylinders is controlled with the help of the aforementioned throttle valve. This configuration makes the engine lose about 10 percent of input energy, used to pump the air from a lower to a higher intake pressure.

In MultiAir's case, Fiat implemented an electro-hydraulic valve actuation system (inspired from the Common Rail technology), which uses a high pressure chamber, fitted in between the cam and engine intake valve. The volume of the oil inside the chamber can by adjusted through an on-off solenoid valve controlled via its own electronic unit.

By doing so, Fiat's system is capable of controlling the air mass and its pressure in each cylinder and at every stroke of the pistons.

THE ENGINE

The TwinAir engine has an exact displacement of 875cc. It has 2 cylinders, with 8 valves each and a 10:1 compression ratio. FTP, the masterminds behind the two cylinder unit, say they have precisely optimized the unit to ensure minimal engine friction. The turbocharged engine gets duel into its pistons thanks to a multipoint injection system. All its components are so light, the entire unit weighs only 85 kg.

The unit is capable, in its least powerful version, of developing 85 hp at 5,500 rpm. The total torque developed by TwinAir is 155 Nm at 2,000 rpm. The torque is being kept at constant levels until the engine reaches 3,500 rpm.

BENEFITS

Being so small, the engine has remarkable fuel consumption figures. In the Fiat 500, the engine eats up to 4.9l/100 km (48 mpg) in the city for the manual transmission version and 4.6l/100 (51 mpg) for the unit paired with a Dualogic gearbox.

This achievements in fuel consumption are not the engine's merit alone. They are also supported by the employment of a start/stop technology fitted standard on the 500 TwinAir. In the manual transmission version, the Gear Shift Indicator tells the driver exactly when to change gears so that it gets the most out of the unit with as little fuel as possible.

Having such low fuel consumption figures, the unit also emits less CO2 into the air. Some 30 percent less, Fiat calculated, than even bigger engines with the same output. The carmaker plans to turn the unit into a hybrid as well, by slapping a 5 kW electric motor on it. This would make it even much more frugal, giving the TwinAir a fuel consumption figure of 2.3l/100 km (100 mpg) and emission levels in the 70 grams per kilometer range.

APPLICATION

As said, the unit is currently fitted on the 500 model and will go on sale this September. Despite the small size and the low appetite for fuel, the TwinAir is capable of propelling the car from a standstill to 60 mph in 11 seconds. Not quite the fastest car out there, but then again that's as fast as bigger engines are capable of propelling much bigger low cost cars.

Here is a video that helps you understand how the engine works:

Yes, you read it right, it's 2013. Fiat is not going to take part in 2012 Auto Expo and will launch the upgraded Punto and Linea on 3rd January. The company has made it clear that no facelift or revision in terms of looks or engine will be there in the upgraded models and the revision will be somewhat like that being noticed in Nissan Micra and Ford Figo.

The two cars (Linea & Punto) will get some cosmetic and performance upgrades and the pricing will also be revised.

Cheers!
