The original beetle was a rear engined, air-cooled car.

But, everything changed with the 'New Beetle' which was launched in 1998. It was based on the VW Golf's platform and had a more conventional front engine, front wheel drive layout.

Not only does the new Beetle no longer have a USP but I also found the interiors uninspiring. One of my clients own TWO new Beetles (both Black) and I never understood what was special in that car apart from a strong resemblance to its iconic predecessor. The old Beetle was a classic, the new one, at best, a wannabe trying to cash in on its looks.

Here are some images that I clicked of the 2 Beetles while at the Expo, minus the people. Pardon me if the pics are a bit repetitive

that was the very thought i had when i checked out the beetle myself, boy couldnt they atleast give a allwheel drive as an option or a rear wheel drive with the engine mounted in the front?

the way i see it, the car has lost its real charm, by real charm i mean what this car was really known for,

1.those robust mechanicals the car had before, which earned it the name "these run for like forever with little maintenance". [hey they still have robust mechanicals but mechatronics from VW? i have my doubts].

2.the rear wheel drive from a rear engine with lesser transmission losses.

and a few more.

for all i know they could redo the history by giving us a beetle just like the old one, instead of golf, they could launch a more economical version of this baby at say 10-13lakhs, with good powerful engines and still have a winner. hell i think they do this on the global scale who knows they may even tie for the 2nd biggest auto maker position. (i am probably exaggerating even worlds biggest automaker).

EDIT: P.S. doesnt the beetle abroad get a bigger/better heart almost half the on road price of the car in India?

The New Beetle currently on sale in India seems to have the 2.0 petrol engine that was originally used in the Octavia in India (not the 1.8 TPi). However, my client claims it is the 2.0 petrol engine used in the previous generation Passat. I am not sure, but enough people on this forum would know.

Audi works on a city car that could give 120kmpl.

The idea may be inspired by the Volkswagen XL1 Concept but Audi has no plans to use the 800cc compact twin-cylinder TDI turbodiesel engine that will power the production model of the XL1. Instead, Audi plans to use a 1L engine of the A1 to do the job because of its flexibility and versatility.

This small city car will provide all the creature comforts of a normal car and it will be affordable to the masses as well. It is expected to shed a few unwanted bits in the interior making it radically lighter than normal.

The VW XL1 is likely to cost more than 100,000 euros. The one-liter car from Volkswagen comes only in a small series of 250 vehicles on the market.

VW has more clients interested in the XL1 than available cars - Demand outstrips supply!

VW says that it has more customers interested in it than vehicles available for sale, so a selection process will soon start, which will share the 200 units available between their future owners.

Since we have many more interested customers than vehicles, we will have a selection process. At the moment we cannot give any more information on this process
