Default WARNING: Chennai & Bangalore run short of diesel

Mods, searched for similar topics, but none exists. Please merge if necessary.

Chennai is facing severe shortage of diesel. I personally tried 6 pumps today before getting diesel finally from an HP pump opposite airport. This is expected to worsen over the weekend.

Searched and got this -

IOC petrol pumps in State go dry

This is not just in Chennai.

Here's a report in today's TOI in Bangalore.

Same situation in Hyderabad too. I have personally crossed 4 pumps just to avoid the diesel traffic an hour ago while returning to home.

While retuning home from office, I could see long queues of diesel engined automobiles in fuel stations. If IOC pump stations have run dry, diesel should be available in HP and BP fuel stations, right? Is this a case of panic filling similar to the one that happened the years back?

My Fiesta has diesel for another 200 km. Hope I will be able to top it tomorrow.

Its not only IOC. I checked at 4 HP, and 2 BP bunks. Got diesel from the 4th HP bunk, near airport.

To be on the safer side- better tank up tomorrow.

So we have two locations in south India reporting this problem, any ideas about the cause. Shouldn't happen normally in todays age and time.

The news of shortage will further increase demand and increase the problem further.

As reported by deccan herald, it seems Mangalore MRPL refinery got shut unexpectedly due to shortage of water. At the same time IOC Chennai refinery was shut down for maintenance. HP and BP bunks inside the city went dry as news of this shortage started spreading.

Even Bangalore has faced shortage of diesel early this week. But I believe it must be back to normal now.
Had a tough time in getting diesel for my friend's car on Wednesday.

I was in Chennai 4 days back and faced the same issue in 4 pumps ( IOC, BP ). Could it be because a diesel price hike is imminent and the pump guys are holding the diesel back?

It was madness to find diesel the day before yesterday.
Tried almost 10 bunks and no luck.
Finally SHELL came to the rescue. They have enough stock of diesel and people in dire need can reach them.
They don't fill fuel in plastic containers.
They are okay with metal cans.
You know its little expense but you have peace of mind.
Anyways after filling in Shell I found some diesel in BP on kodambakam high road.
The guy refused to fill the tank but got in a Rupee 1000 inside.
Its safe for couple of more days.
Any idea when its going to be resolved.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later. The Govt. runs out of money for subsidy, for the quarter, & the OMCs pull the plug on supply.

I personally prefer to be charged market price & adjust my income/driving accordingly. Atleast i then do not have to bother about running out of fuel & then sit arguing with tempo wallas in a long line. This used to happen regularly a couple of years ago before petrol was decontrolled.

Nowadays I prefer to fill up @ Shell whenever possible - the petrol is better & the service courteous. So makes up for the extr bucks u pay.

No such shortage this morning in Chennai. Went into the first fuel station and filled up the tank. Guess (pray) it was a one day scare.

Last night, filled up my GP at my usual place, Ekayars. There was no shortage as such. There was one, last week, in many parts of TN.

My local town in Tamilnadu state also faces diesel shortage. They say they are getting load after a gap of two days which is not sufficient for their demand.

Huge shortage of diesel in Chennai today. I'm now at shell 150% of the normal price of diesel. Is it better to have a petrol engined second car?
