Default Premier Rio, now with the 1.3L Fiat Multijet diesel engine

Premier has re-ignited its partnership with Fiat to deliver the Rio with a 1.3L Multijet diesel engine. The engine has an output of 72 BHP (@ 4000 rpm) and maximum torque of 183 Nm (@ 1800-2400 rpm).

This model will be supplied thorough its dealerships in select cities from August 2, 2012. Premierís current network of 55 dealers is expected to almost double up by the year end. It is also setting up 200 authorized service outlets called PASS (Premier Authorized Service Stations).

The prices for the CRDi4 engine badged Rios will start at Rs 6.7 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). For a car that has flopped in the market and sold just 2,000 units since its launch in 2009, Premier is expecting an improvement with the new engine. The companyís assembly plant is capable of supplying up to 1,000 units a month.

It's important to note that the new version is BS IV compliant, which will finally allow the Rio to move into Tier-1 cities.

Premier has a new comprehensive site dedicated to the RiO.

RiO | India's First Compact SUV

Premier calls their RiO a Compact SUV. I don't know whether that is justified since the car does not have any 4x4 versions. I personally would've liked a 4x4 version with a Variable Geometry Turbo having like 90Bhp on tap. But that would've meant greater R&D costs and hence a higher price tag. I would say it is best called a Compact MUV.

Is it actually India's first compact SUV? Wouldn't that be the Mahindra Classic or in recent times the Mahindra Thar or even the Skoda Yeti?

Premier will have to fight out out to the bones really. Mahindra has a good hold and brand-value in the market. Mini Xylo MUV priced at 6.5 with all bells and whistles sounds a lucrative deal compared to the RiO.

UV, SUV, MUV Ė quite interchangeable indeed

I donít see anything wrong in calling this a Compact SUV. The body type is of a mini-SUV. If 4x4 is to be considered, even the recently launched 2WD Duster cannot be called as an SUV. The RIOís identical siblings, Daihatsu Terios, Kembara (in Malaysia) etc are sold as Mini SUVs in their respective markets.

Rather than calling Rio a flop, we should appreciate that Unknown car with equally dubious car maker (Post Peugeot divorce, forget the Fiat Connection) to top it with non existent dealership/As.s network, they sold 2000 odd units in 3 years.
Adding more dealerships, As.s and moving to Tier 1 cities would surely boost the sales of the Rio.
Million $ question is how serious PAL is?

+1 to that.

Also impressed with the fact that all models (as per website) are offered with ABS+EBD.

Good move by PAL but in the lines of the famous 1.3-MJD another cap in its feather. FIAT in India is surviving mostly by the income generated through this 1.3 MJD. Lovely!

Hope the car doesnt get sluggish as to lower power rating if installed directly. If a VGT is planned then it could do some better.

Lets wait and watch!

From the looks of it, the engine output seems to be lower than what we have seen on the Swift, Ritz and the Vista.

The current engine configurations are : 75 BHP @4000 RPM with 190Nm torque @ 1750-3000.

With Rio offering a bigger boot space, if someone wanted to utilize the whole of it, I am sure the engine would be quite sluggish with a lower torque and BHP rating.

Moreover with the weight of the vehicle, it will have a lower BHP/Ton rating.

Let's see if this one comes out with an Official review by our Mods

Saw this advert in newspaper ( Hindustan Times Aug 03, 2012) today. Interestingly no address of dealerships just phone numbers, wonder who's selling em

prices are ex-pune, so it should be tad cheaper in Delhi

Reminds me of the comment of a friend ages ago when we were watching Sound of Music, "Another nun goes down the drain". It seems in India we will only be left with the ubiquitous FIAT MJD.

Good move by PAL indeed!! However, the engine's state of tune to serve a bigger vehicle is much waited to be seen. In my opinion, a model with the VGT in place of FGT to deliver 90BHP or more would work wonders for this car.

The in-city drive-ability of this would also depend on how the gearbox is mated with the Multijet. Hope Rio has much taller 1st and 2nd gears than what's in Punto and the Linea.

It's surely not much bigger / heavier than other diesel hatchbacks.

The Rio Diesel's kerb weight is 1,145 kilos. That's 95 kilos more than the Swift 1.3 diesel, but only 35 over the Ritz diesel.

GTO -- +1 to that. It would be good to know the official t-bhp take on it. From the looks of it, it doesn't seem as bad as most people make it sound. And should be fun for you guys if nothing else.
