Of cause not. But going by market penetration the Indica diesel cannot be classed as a flop.

I agree, the quality of a car has nothing to do with its sales success or sales success against expectations.
Also, the Petrol safari didnt sell much. Till date, I have seen only 3.

If it was the case then supercars would all be classed as flops.

.
Supercars are not manufactred in bulk to be bought off the shelf like M800. They are never taken out of production just because there is no buyer soon after the launch.

But flop cars can be termed as those ones which are taken out of production due lack of buyers. For example Baleno was almost a flop when OHC was in market and it price was higher than normal. But moment the OHC production was stopped and its price reduced, it started selling in enough numbers to maintain its production. On the other hand Altura production was stopped due to lack of buyers and can be termed as flop.

Wagons seem to flop in our country no matter what their price is. The Weekend/Adventure, Swing, Combi, Altura all have unimpressive sales.

But I wonder if Tata managed to reach their 6000 Marinas/year target? If so, it would be the first wagon in the country which could be termed as a relative hit.

since this thread is creating so much confusion i think the thread starter shud mention what does he mean by a flop car - a car which did not sell too much,a car which did not serve its function,or a car which does not satisfy its customer?

The Versa definitely bombed. The Baleno was a flop to start with. Later Maruti revised prices to ensure decent sales.

I think many can consider it not to be a flop. But I am certainly not one of them.

Bmw also sold all their funduro bikes at less than half the prices. should that be considered a hit?

Corsa, corsa sail, petra (although a great car), Uno, Versa, Altura,

in case of fiat petra/uno the dealership is responsible for not promoting it in india, like Sundaram motors in Bangalore. Now Tata along with their desiel cars will have petrol cars from fiat to sell. They have good chance in the market.

Ah! Wait till some Palio users see this--you might have stepped into a minefield buddy!

Getting to the point, I think it might not be right to classify FIAT's cars as flops, but the company has certainly nuked itself in India. FIAT cars still have takers, despite the terrible reputation for lacklustre sales strategies, poor after sales service, etc, etc. I would classify flop cars as those that are brought in based on flawed thought or research and then flop in India. FIAT cars (the Palio, the Petra and the Adventure) are all in segments with decent sales (except for the Adventure perhaps, which is in a niche segment). The cars are acknowledged as being good vehicles and worthy competitors to the rest of the field. The only reason they don't sell in significant numbers is because of the company which has made a mess of its business in India and has never gotten it right--for instance when the Palio was launched and got a fabulous response, everyone felt FIAT would finally get its act right, helped along by a good market response, yet FIAT managed to dig itself deeper in the hole.

So, flop company yes (in India), but definitely not flop cars!

- Ivor

P.S. I don't drive a FIAT car!
