I believe looks did play a large part in the fall of Aria. XUV looked butch(ignoring the overdone front) and had what people would say, 'jeep look'. Aria is a..er.. I dont know what is. Wiki says its a blend of SUV, MPV and a sedan . To a lot of people, Aria looked more like a station wagon than anything else. I still remember, at the time of Aria's launch, a lot of people thought that it was the facelift version of the Marina, already a flop.

Looks weren't the real reason why Aria failed. It was it's pricing, simply way too much for a Tata. The XUV was cheaper by a fair margin,had more gadgets and better road presence as well. Also,Tata initially offered the Aria only in Prestige variant. Also,Tata couldn't match the reputation of the Mahindra thanks to the Scorpio. The Aria should have been targeted against the Innova with better pricing and marketing then it may have done better.

The new pricing puts the Aria below the XUV but still the XUV continues to outsell its competition. Hope the new pricing brings better fortune for the Aria.

Aria should be relaunched as a Crossover.
I am sure we will find hordes with blank cheques ready to book the vehicle even without doing a test drive.

The same vehicles in the 90s and last decade would have been utter failures because of people's association with station wagons. But today they are successful under the guise of crossover!

Off-late, in Bangalore I am seeing a lot of Verito Vibes as cabs. Mainly with Ola and even company cab operators. Have hardly seen one or two of them in white board though. Yes, it is a BIG flop and deserves to be one.

The upcoming Tata HEXA could be the replacement for Aria and hope it will have much better fate than Aria especially with the taunted better looks.

TATA Hexa will be a lifestyle vehicle. It may not price below 15 lac range.
But the lowest model may have all the goodies like XUV W8.
So i believe it will not gain the monthly numbers as mahindra getting for XUVs.

Other cars which were even worse than the Fiesta are: Maruti Vitara XL7 V6,
Maruti Kizashi( this car flopped all around the world actually), Grand Vitara and the Maruti Altura. All of these were also super duper flops .

Actually Koleos wasn't a flop, it was just a strategy. In fact, a brilliant one from Renault to get rid of the taxi tag (thanks to Logan) overnight, and place themselves as a premium brand before launching their other models. A trick that Maruti/Suzuki is unable to pull off. Some of Renault's models might not have succeeded, but the brand value has leapt miles from Logan days, thanks to Koleos.

Totally agree

Maruti Vitara was a disaster for Maruti, no body liked it. We used to call it as a "Khatara". Kizashi was good and could have made good numbers if made in India. Because of import duty price was very high and that killed the product.

We used to call it like that just because it was very flop and not selling at all. No other reason. Khatara sounds similar to Vitara, so we used to call "Grand Khatara" Generally when something fails, people make fun of it, applies to everything. My friends used to make fun of Ford Fusion as well as it was also a flop model.

The XL7 was a pretty ugly car. Good car no doubt, but has a pretty dreary face. The later generation looked pretty good and had solid mechanicals but was a little ahead of its time and Maruti lacked the brand value.

Most flop cars in India were great cars. It quite sad that some not so good cars sell very well and they didn't.

Is it so? How many Koleos have you seen on the road? Or even in the showroom? Market leader Fortuner in this segment sells 100 times more!
Before Duster, Renault is an unknown brand in India.

Logan just helped them (and Nissan) to get introduced to Indian market through Mahindra. When Renault themselves stepped in after severing ties with Mahindra, they came in first with their sedan (Fluence) and SUV (Koleos), which received lukewarm response. It is after Duster, the brand really took shape in India. Something similar to VW which also came in with expensive cars - Passat and Toureg, but what finally took off were the Polo, Vento and Jetta.
Suzuki on the other hand is a small player globally (by market share), and their largest market is India, even more than their own home market - Japan. Their core business is small cars (kei cars in japan) and they do not have a good presence in premium cars. And it takes a lot of ground work to establish as a premium player, and the current Nexa does not seem to help them (as they again started selling B2 hatchbacks in these showrooms).
