The Dieselgate scandal, and subsequent demap + the push for electric vehicles has seen me push forward this deadline - the Laura is currently in the market and I am hoping to bring home the vRS soon!

That aside, I've noticed that the more expensive cars are generally kept for around 75Kkm (any where between 5-9 years of running), and the cheaper ones are replaced within 5 years.
Pretty ironic as the cheaper ones are typically more reliable and robust for our conditions - trying to change that.

Unless a car develops niggles / high maintenance costs / needs change - we typically keep the car for as long as we can or until we get bored - whatever is earlier. Currently have two cars that fall into the have to change bracket (Laura & A6).
Once that is done, I hope to keep the other cars for at least another 3-4 years!

1) Maruti 800, August 1996-August 2010
Ownership/Kms: 14 years and 65K Kms(approx),
Reason for changing the car: Sold it as we wanted to upgrade to the next segment. Car was running flawlessly even after 14 years.

2) Maruti Astar ZXi, August 2010-December 2014
Ownership/Kms: 4 years and 3 months, 70K Kms,
Reason for changing the car: Gearbox failure. Gearbox broke down completely and the repair costs were way too much, considering the value of the car at that point.

3) Hyundai Verna CRDi SX(O) MT, December 2014 - present
Ownership/Kms: 2 years and 10 months @ 1,06,500 Kms
No plans to replace her in the near future. I have some of the most amazing memories with her. She has covered a lot of India and hope to cover more. Plan to keep her till 3L kms.

1) Hyundai Accent, Jan 2007 to December 2010 - 4 years 50,000 Kms

2) Hyundai Fludic Verna, Feb 2011 to Dec 2012 - Approx 2 years 45,000 kms

3) Renault Fluence, Dec 2012 till now Nov 2017 - 5 years 80,000 kms still clocking......

Will clock 1,00,000 kms by end of 2018 and upgrade to a premium SUV.

I voted for 10 years and over.
My cars
M800 - 1997 to 2010. I learnt driving on this car. Sold it for 35K with 42K on the odo. Reason; upgrade.
Honda City - 2009 till date. Has made just 23K on the odo in 8 1/2 years.
My car sits idle for a month that I am away from home on work and the next month I am home, it hardly does 200-300 km max. There is no one to even run its engine on idle in my absence. So its battery dies every 4 years. No issues so far except for the low GC and the non standard speed breakers that you find everywhere in India.
Not planning to buy any new car till I retire or am thrown out of employment. That would be the time I would buy a new one and do justice to her.

Tata Indica diesel, 2001 to 2006, 5 + years, 25000 kms., Ford Fiesta 1.6 SXI petrol, 2006 to present, 11 + years, 54000 kms. Planning to sell. Jeep Compass limited Diesel, 2 months.

So, really cannot comment on how long I keep my cars. But should say that a car is a fairly long term investment for me. Hope to keep the Compass for atleast 5 to 6 years, if not more.

That is some strange car buying pattern. Out of 6 cars you sold 3 within few months. My family will kick me out of the house if I try something relatively close to this.

After the surgery, I was advised not to drive and I thought of quitting driving forever and sold my Rapid. The bad experience with Ola and Uber for the daily commute to office forced me to start driving again within a year. Demonetisation helped in a way to sell Duster. I travel frequently in my new job and go to the office once in a while. Thus selling Ecosport before facelift was a good decision and it also got a good resale value. The historical increase in stock prices of SEMI companies in 2016-17 before me quitting the job helped to manage things at home. I now drive only on weekends and monthly usage is about 600km, so happy with the WR-V. I still miss my Rapid.

1) Swift Vxi - June 2007 to September 2009 with 4500 kms on Odo. Reason for low mileage - did not know driving when I bought it. Reason for selling, learnt driving when I was about to sell it and so wanted a diesel car to match my high monthly mileage (was doing 60 kms a day at least for work plus the occasional outstation trips).

2) Tata Indica Vista Aura QJD - September 2009 to Feb 2010 with 6000 kms on Odo. Had to sell it since had to move to the US for an on-site assignment.

3) Hyundai i20 Crdi Asta - September 2011 to September 2017 with 65000 kms on Odo. Came back from on-site, moved closer to office in OMR. So daily mileage came down to 35 kms to and fro per day. Sold it off because the car started to give lot of ECM issues - ECM failed twice within a span of 8 months. Also was extremely unhappy with Hyundai Service in Chennai.

4) Tata Nano GenX XTA - Dec 2015 to till date. This is for my wife and the backup car for me. No plans to sell till Dec 2023 at least. Has done 12000 kms till now.

5) Maruti Dzire Zxi+ AMT - Oct 2017 to till date. My current car and less than a month old. Has 650 kms on odo. No plans to change till at least 2025.

My first two cars were sold off relatively quickly with very low mileage. But cars after that have been with me for 6 years. I hope to continue or extend this trend going forward.

My Current Car: Hyundai i20, Jan 2014 till date, Odo at 96K.
Planning to use it for next year or 2 at least and then lateral upgrade to a C or D1 segment sedan or if budget allows a entry luxury segment.

Maruti Zen Nov-1996 to Mar-2007.
Drove it for 76000+ kms.
Was a good companion on highway rides, sold it as usage had dropped drastically.

Tata Indica Vista Aqua Quadrajet Nov-2008 to Feb-2017.
Drove it for 74000+ kms.
Enjoyed driving this car for it's space as well as comfort on Highways. Sold off after a very good deal for another car.

Toyota Corolla 1.8J Feb-2017 till date.
Bought second hand @72500+ kms.
Currently enjoying this wonderful car, which was well cared for by previous owner.

Maruti Alto LX 2007.
First car in the family,
The only one so far but has been doing some proper running only in the last couple of years.
2007 to 15 31k KM. 2015 to 17 30k KM.

Intend to keep it for another year or 2 and upgrade to an SCross (if it gets petrol) or something similar.
Reason to upgrade, in a single word safety.
Will keep the new car for at least another 10 years unless outlawed.

Well I'm still driving my first car, a 2007 Swift VDi, since more than 10yrs and approx 1.2 lakh kms. I had bought the car on 5yr loan, and enjoying driving loan free after that.
Now that the car is old & quite asking for maintenance, the very thought of buying new car on loan again scares me (not the new car, but new loan is scary ). And when I buy a new one, that's again going to be with me for at least a decade.
