When I started this thread, I thought I stand a risk of being killed! But turned out to be a breather!

I think the top factors resulting in low mileages would be:

1. Pathetic Traffic Jams which not only are frustrating but also WASTE a lot of time.

2. Not enough travel distance to workplace.

3. Not enough time/ energy to go for an outing after work.

4. High Fuel Costs.

5. Parking Issues like in market/ malls etc.

Due to these factors, my car has been mostly reduced just into a weekend car. It is used on the weekdays only if going places is really necessary at night like to visit the relatives, parties etc, to get household stuff from markets, during rains, winters, etc.

For most other purposes, I find my bike much more convenient & cost saving. Also, I can withstand a scratch on my bike, albeit with a heavy heart, but not on my car This might be one more reason!

And BHPians, please keep your posts coming.

Regards,
Saket

My innova has run 45k kms gives me a mileage of 12 in city and about 13-14 on highways. My corolla (87k) 6 years of ownership is quite a surprising package dubbed as a comfortable sedan gives me 11 in the city and 16-17 on the highway the best of the lot is the vento returns a healthy 14 in the city and 17-20 on the highways and it has done only 12k for the past 3yrs.

My pick of the lot will be the ageing corolla. It's the most comfortable, spacious of the lot and has excellent cruising abilities and since its a Toyota I expect it to run forever.

Innova is great to take your family on trips and the mileage is unaffected by the number of people in the car.

Interesting. This thread has me feeling better as I was thinking that we were under utilizing our car, a Swift zxi of 2008 vintage which has clocked up a total of 26272 kilometers as of this morning. Though this car is used the most often and on a daily basis the extremely short runs between home>> office>> market>> club>> temple etc. have resulted in the low odometer readings. In comparison the two sedans have fared better as they are used only on highway trips which though are not that frequent but a single trip adds approximately 2000 kilometers on average and do not qualify as low milage munchers.

While online media sharing sites like facebook are abuzz with "confession pages", us enthusiasts seem to have joined in with confessing how we have underutilised our rides. In my opinion, it's an automotive sin to drive less than 10,000 km a year in a vehicle!

Sadly, this is especially true for any household (including mine) that has more than one vehicle. The compact, cheaper one (Maruti 1000) is used as the daily drive while the other is used only on special occasions or when the entire family is going out (Grand Vitara).

While what you say - 10,000 KMs per year is in line with what manufacturers expect their cars to be run (if you calculate going by your service-time intervals), but even if I use my BIKE extensively, I won't clock this figure. My current average running of Bike usage is about 6000-6500 kms per year and clocking 10K kms in an year in my car is like a distant dream for me. With rising fuel costs, this is neither encouraging too. Just a small calculation leads to a figure of Rs. 55,000 just for petrol expenses for running 10K kms. Adding other general maintenance & running repairs will further boost this figure. I am sure that the figure is substantial for any middle income family.

Factors apart from just cost, like those which I mentioned in my other post little earlier further decrease the use of four wheelers, IMO.

Thankfully cars do not come with quaterly 'penalties' like the banks charge for non-maintenence of average minimum balances!

Okay, 2008 Alto at 12000 kms. My wife uses this and hence the low running. We bought this as a used car in 2010 and at that time it had done just 8000kms. In the next 2.5 years it managed just another 4000kms. I don't see it doing much in the future as well. Wouldn't be surprised if we sell it after 2 years with less than 15k on the ODO.

Dont know why its such a co-incidence with low mileage and premier padminis seen here in Mumbai.
One 1988 Premier padmini sold last year had clocked astonishing 16000 kms in 25 years.
Next one was a 1997 Premier Padmini belonging to a old Parsi lady in S.Mumbai it regularly ran for 5 kms daily

No to offend genuine people, but practically cars with unknown history with low odo readings- I will prima facie attribute this to tampered/ bad instruments.

Well I think this thread is apt for me and my family too!

we have the following:
Maruti Suzuki 800 '99 - 29200 Kms
Maruti Suzuki Swift '07 - 16000 Kms
Honda Brio V AT '12 - 3500 Kms (Mom's car, will not cover more than 5-6K Kms a year)
Bajaj chetak '87 - 35000 Kms(round about)

I have just bought my first car, '07 Palio 1.6 Stile with an indicated 35000 Kms on the odo with full service history , I cover about 300 Kms a month mostly.

Last year I came across a '95 Peugeot 309 GL for sale, with an indicated odo reading of 27000 Kms still wearing its original set of tyres! Still kick myself for not purchasing it, I love that car.
Also around 2 years back I came across a '98 Cielo AT for sale at Rs1.5 Lakhs, with an indicated odo reading of 7000 Kms, the owner was an NRI.

On the other hand one of my cousins did close to 60000 Kms in a year in his Fabia.

Wow! This thread sure made me happy.
Now first thing is that it has just been about 3 years since I got my driver's license, before me all our cars were either driven by my very reliable paid drivers or by my father.
Though a few cars have been driven their nuts out, but most of my cars are relatively very low on mileage.
1993 Mahindra MM540 2wd- thought the ODO doesn't work anymore, the last time I checked it was at 1,80,000 clicks.
1996 Maruti 800- the car is still with us and in top shape, has only been driven around 36,000 kms till date.
2006 Mahindra Bolero camper- now this was the workhorse, this was the only paisa wasool car we've ever owned, it was driven a shade under 200k when I sold it in 2011.
2007 Mahindra Scorpio cRDE- my favourite amongst the lot, the ODO is at 29,936 kms.
2010 Hyundai i20 petrol Magna- just reached the 10k mark around 10 days back. It took a looong three years!
2011 VW Polo 1.2 diesel- all other cars are in a relatively smaller town, but this VW is my daily driver in Pune, has been driven 16k kms in a shade under two years.

I love my cars, and I take proud in all of them being in top shape till date, but I have to agree that its partly because of very low mileage!

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought this was something I was gonna win hands down!!

However, I do seem to have quite a few strong contenders here.

Anyways, here goes. Our i10 A/T ASTA turns 4 this June and is at 123xx km currently. Used mostly by my mom for short city runs because she doesn't manage an M/T too well. Occasionally used by me and rarely by dad.

My Santro Xing AT bought in July 2007 has clocked 22500 km so far. That is close to 4000km per year, but in last two years the yearly average is probably only 2000km. Now it is used mostly by wife within city. Earlier I used to occasionally take it to work because of the ease of driving an AT. As petrol prices went up I almost completely stopped using it.

Our Dec '99 Zen with 57488km on the odo so far. This translates to less than 400 km of driving per month.

My 2004 Fiat Petra 1.6 has done 31000 kms while my 3 year old Honda Jazz has already done 43000 kms. Both cars are in excellent condition mechanically but prefer driving the Jazz because it has better visibility, large ORVMs, more practical, easier to park and overall less stressful to drive.
