I will look at Beemers only if they do away with 'Run Flat Tyres'.

^^

- Runflat tyres on a BMW add to the harshness in ride-quality. However, the 1-Series (and most new BMWs) should come with the new generation of runflats that apparently have softer side-walls for a better ride.

- One could swap the run flats for regular tubeless tyres if it's a big concern.

- The bigger issue IMO is the lack of a spare. It makes long-distance driving a risky proposition. At least a space-saver (provided standard) would have helped matters.

- It's Bimmer, not Beemer.

Does the 1 Series come with Run-Flats as stock from factory? The links mention in this thread have no mention of such so I guess we can expect them to be the normal tyres. Moreover will it not void the warranty if you change from run-flats to regular tube-less varieties?

This is the most puzzling feature I have on the Bimmer as it knows how the Indian roads are and a spare tyre is of what importance to any customer.

Absolutely.
Whether run-flat or no run-flat, they MUST provide full-size spare and a proper place for it in the boot. Period.

Trouble is, with a spare tyre the boot space will be severely compromised.

Exactly, BMW have an attitude issue - what's their problem in keeping space for the spare below the boot floor????

If BMW doesn't provide a spare then what is located in the conventional spare location? Is it a flat bed type?

I guess BMW thinks that it is bought by people who don't know what is a tyre burst or a puncture is so why waste time in scooping a depression for the spare tyre.

Don't forget the 1 is a rear wheel drive hatchback. Space is limited under the floor.

Run-flats are not a problem. Not having the space for a spare is. And the low GC is another concern.

Here are some videos that might help clear doubts about Run Flat Tyres

The 1 Series is launching on 3rd September, and BMW has planned for Dynamic Drive Weekends for the entire month in various cities across India. Delhi and Mumbai events on 7th and 8th. So best to Test Drive the car and then decide.

Anurag.

Even I had the same curiosity. So I opened up the boot and here are the pics!

These are form my rental 116i in Germany in April 2012. I had driven the car for about 1200 km. Loved it!

Whats in it?
1. Battery + Relay??
2. Fusebox
3. Telematics box (incl. Audio Amplifer, GPS communications etc.)

OK, so no RWD hatch for me. Simple. If I get an itch for RWD, I will go for a sedan, but BMW are notorious with those as well - no spare tire in the 3/5/X series either...

Yes, whatever may be the technology of the tires, we need a full size spare.

Make trip to Ladakh without a spare tire and we will see. I lost 2 tires - first one around Tso Moriri, which is >200km away from Leh...

Thanks for the pictures.

Now in all conventional cars the battery, relay are under the bonnet whereas the fuse box are in the passenger cabin under the dashboard. So if these are placed in the boot then is the ebgine bay that cramped and sports a big engine that it could not fit the battery is it?!

Just my view. I can be wrong.

In most BMWs, the battery pack is in the boot. It helps to keep the weight distribution 50:50 and lowers the centre of gravity as well.

The newer Run-flats may be better, but the main issue is that if you have a flat in the hinterland you are done. A space saver with normal tyres will be fine. Also, once you put in a spare a lot of the boot space will got for a toss.

I know of someone (who runs a dealership of a Jap brand) who had a flat in the hinterland, and ended up selling is 5-series due to the aggro.
