Wow !!! Now that's a great car by Mercedes indeed. It looks so gorgeous in red!. I think this will set a new benchmark in the Rs. 18-20 lakhs segment!. Good job by Merc

Hi folks, this is my first post on this forum. The diesel is actually a 2.0L unit
Just wanted to share that I have already pre-booked the A class (petrol a180 sport) with Auto hangar Mumbai. This was around may 8th and they had already received 25 pre-orders then. Delivery indicated around June end or early July.
Price committed by them is approx 24-25lacs on road Mumbai. Don't have any of this in writing from the dealer though but the sales guy was very confident.
I was a bit worried that the car seemed a bit underpowered especially without a test drive. But I drove the B class instead which has the same engine and felt that it should be adequate enough for usage that is predominantly urban with occasional highway excursions.

Diesel is a 2.2 L engine, confirmed at Sundaram Motors, Bangalore

Parrys - Very thoughtful of you to have posted neat pictures of this youngest entrant. Rear seats a bit too upright maybe,

Interesting point to note on this review is that 'navigation' is available on the cheapest Mercedes for Indian market .

I feel it would boil down to personal preference and taste.
Though it cant be denied that the large star on the grill does give the car a very sporty character vs an elegant and understated look that the smaller hood ornament provides.
I for one was really impressed with what it managed to do to the C class when they upgraded it in 2011-12.
Also I would imagine that it would be a wee bit more difficult for the 'logo thieves' to steal the larger logo. Dont know about other cities but this is yet a big nuisance in Bombay.
It may interest you guys that one sales advisor mentioned that the new diamond grill will be an optional accessory costing around 70k......seems like highway robbery in a new guise!!

Some leaked image about the colors available in India. Initially there were rumors that only white is being released, but looks like we have options of red, white and silver!

Congrats.

Am interested to know :
1) Why did you choose the A-Class?
2) What were the other car/s you considered?
3) What / who will the car be used for?

Hi Rehaan,

Answers to your queries given in reverse order-

3) I'm looking to upgrade from my civic (5+years). The car will be primarily used for my daily office commute, weekend picnics or parties and probably an out of town drive once a month. I drive myself and the family is pretty small (3.1/2) and we have another car as well.

2) Frankly I have considered the whole market range between 15-25 lacs. I was clear that the car should have automatic transmission. Petrol vs Diesel didn't matter too much as my mileage is very low (<800km p.m.) and considering that within a year both will cost almost the same (???)
Went through Cruze, Elantra, Fluence, Jetta, Laura (none of them seemed to be too much of an upgrade though I felt that the jetta was way better than the rest) Also saw Accord, superb, sonata but found them too large for my predominantly city usage.
Briefly also considered the Fortuner & Rexton but again found them to be too heavy and cumbersome for my liking.
The best options seemed to be the 1st generation X1 and the new CRV.
The new CRV somehow feels too bland on the inside and a bit over-priced as well.
A few leftover examples of the earlier X1 were available at fantastic discount brInging almost within my budget. But I was not impressed with the relatively spartan cabin (s20d) and very limited equipment though this was easily the best drivers car I had tested.

1) Which brings us to - why the A class?
Well it ticked all the boxes in terms of being --
- compact yet large enough for 3,
- a relatively recent product worldwide,
- an obvious upgrade from the big 'H' to the 3 pointed star
- an automatic with huge list of goodies Et al

But, for me the choice of what car to buy goes far beyond the logical and the obvious and becomes more instinctive and emotional.
The car should excite you and make you dream of the day you will own it and drive it. There are lots of super expensive super cars that can do this too easily, but when something that fits into your budget manages to do it.....bingo!!! That's what happened to me I guess.

Though I'm keeping my fingers crossed that MB doesn't go and do something really stupid with the pricing and puts it beyond 26-27l
The pre-booking amount is refundable with a minor penalty of 1-2k but that's not the path I want to tread on......

Daimler recalls over 6,000 Mercedes A-class hatchbacks.

In certain cases it is possible that the airbag would not deploy properly in the case of an accident
About 6,000 cars in Germany are affected, plus an unquantified figure outside its domestic market.

Very interesting to see the diesel cheaper than the petrol.
What are the spec differences between the two?
