Default Toyota to recall Altis Diesel in India

IAB have reported that TKM (Toyota Kirloskar Motor) will initiate a recall of cars in India for which formal announcement will be made on Monday (27 May 13). Here is the link to IAB article:

http://indianautosblog.com/2013/05/t...ll-india-78009

Thinking aloud, what could be the subject of recall:

1. Suspension in Etios/ Liva; or
2. Corollas for fast wearing brakes; or
3. Any other issue.

We, as part of Toyota’s commitment towards the Customer First Philosophy, have initiated a recall campaign in the month of May, for Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel. The campaign is for Corolla Altis Diesel manufactured between 3rd August 2012 and 14th February 2013.

A potential aberration on the left or right side of the driveshaft has been observed in a few cases. We have decided to proactively inspect and repair/replace the drive shafts. This is a precautionary measure to ensure customer satisfaction.

The above said service can be availed free of cost at your nearest Toyota Dealership. It may take approximately 2 hours. We request you to go to the dealership with a prior appointment, so as to enable them to serve you better.

Please call our customer care centre @ toll - free no. 1800-425-0001 for any query or assistance.

TKM is committed to do their best in assisting you through this activity.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and assure you of our best services, as always.

Wow. 2 days and a recall each for both of my cars. Luckily in both cases mine is not included in the recall. For a second there I was really excited hoping to see them address the brake pad and disc problem in the Altis.

Toyota recalls 1,000 Altis diesel cars.

Recall is to fix a potential problem with the driveshaft. The recall will cover the diesel variant manufactured between August 3, 2012, and February 14, 2013.

I do appreciate the move by TKM to fix the known defects in their vehicle. This goes to show that they are ready to take ownership of their mistake and are concerned about the safety of their customers. But, this is not the first time TKM is recalling vehicles, in past we have seen batches of Innova being recalled due to an oil-leakage issue. Is TKM losing out on quality checks and proper testing ? Isn't this going to impact the brand(Toyota) that has defined quality standards among car manufacturers ?

A transparent recall program is a GOOD thing, and needs to be publicly acknowledged and appreciated. With the woeful state of affairs in both road safety as well as consumer protection, the more transparency we have from reputed vendors, the better it is. Far from having an impact on the brand, I would rather go buy another Toyota, with this assurance that TKM will not silently brush any major safety issue under the carpet.
