Yes , i guess this was for the year 2010, but still a very good resource to get a birds eye view of the stark contrast in road deductions across the country.

GST bill to be tabled in parliament this winter session. Could we also see the road tax bill in the same session? These legislation could turn out to be the much needed stimulus the auto industry needs.

I have a query. If I have purchased a 2 wheeler for say 1 lakh (on road) in a state and want to use it in Karnataka, how much road tax should be paid in KA? Is it 14% (for example) on the original purchase price or on the current price in KA? Please clarify.

Just saw the below article in ET stating that this may get into force by April, 2014. The link to the news section is as below -

The article just says that the central government will recommending states to have 6% as minimum road tax. It didn't specify anything about uniform one tax rates across states. This is of no use for folks in Karnataka. :-(

There is no way the center can mandate a uniform tax rate to the states without being in breach of the constitution of the country. Besides, in a federal democracy such as ours, it is only fair that the states have a say in these matters.

What the center can certainly help negotiate and push the states to do is easier movement of vehicles across states, certainly to allow people refunds of road tax already paid if they are moving the vehicle to a lower road taxed state. Something on the lines of the number portability system for mobiles. This will also give a strong push to the second hand car market.

Is there any use of postponing purchase from Feb to April next year in lieu of expected tax changes? Will the road tax come down from 12% in AP by any chance? Or is this only to increase road tax to 6% in states where it is currently lower?

Well what will happen us who had to pay up 18% of tax of the vehicle?

We will not get out 12% back? :(

Yes that is Humplore(Bangalore) for you.

Highest tax, equally pathetic public transport and road infrastructure.

Wonder what has happened to this proposal. Can this Forum start an online petition page and give wide publicity to sign and submit it to the Govt.?

Yeah, like the Govt. cares! Are you new to this country? This is no Scandinavian nation. The Govt. here cares a hoot about welfare of its citizens. Only parties at centre and states change but motto is same. Loot, loot and loot. They just want to fill coffers at slightest excuse so that they can skim off the cream from there. The worst and greediest are AP and Karnataka.

Sir, I have little to disagree with your post, but let us still keep putting some pressure is my idea. Let's not underestimate the power of this forum, lets give it a try.

To the Admis: Can we have bumper sticker with "We want uniform road tax" or some kind of it.

In Scandinavia 60% of the nation pays Income tax, in India that figure is 3.5%.

In Scandinavia taxes on car vary from 20-50% depending on type/rating etc. Plus there is an annual road tax & mandatory vehicle certification. Plus taxes on fuel are much more than we have here.

All we seem to do on this forum & on others, is ask for even lower taxes on the pretext of corrupt politicians.

Scandinavia has got where it has BECAUSE the aam aadmi there has low corruption, participates in local self-governance & has strong education, social co-operation & peace/stability for a century. AND they pay a lot of taxes, mostly honestly.

Then you must also mention what the average salaries in India are and what they are in Scandinavia.

The average salaries and standard of living is high in Scandinavia BECAUSE of their last century of steady progress & aam aadmi taking part in society building & governance. You should see the participation of people there in building society meetings, local community programs, politics, NGOs, governance.. is just far far better than ours.

If only we invest the money we waste on religion here into social programs, health, sports etc. we will improve our standard of living a couple of decades faster.
