The pricing is a tough call. For few thousand rupees more (... even if it is loosing value fast) you could get the Ritz & i10. And, both these cars are far more superior to the Wagon-R (afterall!!) Stingray.

I believe it will be more of a halo product or a special edition to attract masses to showroom & people will then but the regular Wagon-R. But, I only hope Maruti Suzuki do not discount it in long run, which would dilute the Wagon-R Stingray brand IMO.

Default 2013 Maruti Suzuki WagonR Sting Ray launched in India

Link to News Section

Maruti Suzuki has launched a new variant of the hugely popular WagonR "Tall Boy" hatchback, in the form of the Sting Ray model. While the press material from Maruti Suzuki eschews the usage of the WagonR moniker on the Sting Ray model, the car is essentially a WagonR under the skin. The main highlights of the Sting Ray include the projector headlamps up front, a new grille and bumper.

The car also gets side skirts, blacked out B-pillars, alloy wheels in a new design, new tail lamps and a chrome embellishment on the hatch lid. On the inside, the Sting Ray gets all-black interiors and a blue-back lit instrumentation cluster. The car also gets a factory fitted audio system with USB and AUX-IN functions while the leather wrapped steering gets audio controls on the VXi variant.

The top end variants of the Sting Ray get a driver side power window with one touch operation, tilt steering and electric wing mirrors. The car also gets a multi-function display that reads out distance-to-empty, average and instant fuel economy figures. The 60:40 split rear seat for added utility is carried over from the regular WagonR.

The Sting Ray retains the current WagonR's 1 liter K-Series petrol engine in a triple cylinder layout. This motor outputs 67 Bhp of peak power and 90 Nm of peak torque, and is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. While the regular WagonR is available with CNG-Petrol and LPG-Petrol dual fuel options, these options haven't yet been made available on the Sting Ray model, which comes in three variants: LXi, VXi and VXi (Option).

The Maruti Suzuki Sting Ray delivers an ARAI certified mileage figure of 20.51 Kmpl and the car can be specified in five colours: White, Grey, Red, Silver and Blue. Bookings for the Sting Ray hatchback are open at all Maruti Suzuki showrooms across India. While the LXi model is priced at 4.09 lakh rupees, the VXi and the VXi (Option) models sell at 4.38 and 4.67 lakh rupees respectively. All prices reflect ex-showroom Delhi figures.

In the next year or so, the WagonR and the Sting Ray hatchbacks could be equipped with a new 800cc turbo diesel engine that engineers at Suzuki Motor Corporation in Japan are developing for use in Maruti Suzuki's range of entry level small cars. This engine is expected to make its debut in the next generation Alto hatchback, code-named the YL7 (a possible replacement for the Estilo and A-Star models).

I wonder if i would be right in saying that the WagonR + StingRay combo looks like the Duster + Terrano one? Lot of peripheral treatment but largely the same deal under the skin for a 50k premium.

But in this case they have the same service stations and the profit by their sales go the single manufacturer.

This happens to be the 18th car in Maruti's stable! and I actually don't see the point of selling this alongside the regular WagonR.

As someone rightly said, by 2020, Maruti would be having a car which targets each and every Indian family!!

Its good that Maruti is getting us more new cars (ok, I know). But, they just have so many cars in their lineup, its just a useless overkill.

So, LXi is priced just 20K higher than regular WR LXi?

Probably they want to play it safe with continuing the more conservative looking Wagon-R, which is still puts up decent monthly numbers. The new String Ray looks more like a 'hit or a complete miss'.

Thats the manufacturer's perspective. What about us, the consumers? Where is the value?

The projector headlamps are definitely a plus, considering how most of Maruti vehicles have poor headlamps. Even the Tata Nano has surprisingly good headlamps according to most reviews, considering (lack of) street lamps on Indian roads (apparently, it's a case of favoring cost savings over safety on the part of the government). The extra 20-25k is probably worth paying for the projector lamps and USB audio because one would anyway pay for the OEM parts only to toss them out and fit after-market parts and possibly void the warranty (unless one pays for the dealer-fitted parts, which cost about the same as the price difference).

Big deal!! Hero motorcorp has 19...

Just Kidding.

Looks like someone wants to set a useless guiness record of most products under 1 brand in MUL! (Hero motors too)

Nothing about us. We just have more variants now to chose from. Its just a technique to pull more customers from similar cass car in another manufacturer's stable.
