Wow!! Nice looking (I wonder how different the finished product would look like) - and high time. Thank god they have gone completely away from the old look. And yes - an AT version please.

Default Tata Motors 'KITE': Small car between the Nano & Indica

It seems that Tata Motors have finally rolled up their sleeves to make their presence felt in small car market 15 years after it launched TATA Indica with series of launches in small car space.
First the Zest & Bolt (4m sedan) and not Kites in A2 segment.

An article was found in Economic Times today

"Tata Motors has a great reach in market, but it has issues of quality as it is a key to success in this segment with demanding Indian customer have a lot of options to choose these days. It will interesting to see how Tata differentiate their sub-1000 cc product and offers a greater value to the customer from the established products in the segment ," said Amit Kaushik — principal analyst (Autos) — IHS Automotive, a global consultancy firm.
The only way they are going to differentiate is by pricing it low, I mean is there any other strategy possible? Or may be put in too many features which might not always work

It will have the best mileage of all small cars above 30 kmpl per litre with the 3 cylinder version of their existing CRDI engine used in Indica V2.

In my opinion it is not the pricing but positioning which will decide the fate of the car. Nano for once was extremely competitively priced and had the space, shape and entire package way beyond what people had expected it to be however, positioning it as cheapest car coupled with few burning incidents changed the fate of otherwise wonderful car. It also means they still continue to keep "only" Indica within Taxi segment. Today there are so many people not buying Indica for personal use as its a taxi car.
Additionally, its time TATA's slowly and steadily eradicate niggles from the car along with their already provided competitive price and good engine options.

How will it achieve 30 KMPL? The engine displaces 1.05L.

GM Beat which is equipped with 3 cylinder version of Swift/Fiat 1.3L engine displaces 936 CC but has ARAI certified figure of less than 26 KMPL!

They'll have to make the car significantly lighter than Beat to achieve 30. It'll be sad if Tata also starts producing tinny body shells like Maruti and Honda.

Indica v2 has an ARAI rating of 25 kmpl so with one cylinder less and comparatively lighter body it should achieve 30kmpl.

By that logic, Beat should also be giving 30 KMPL but it doesn't. In fact, the difference between ARAI figures for Swift and Beat isn't much although Beat uses the same engine minus one cylinder and has a smaller, lighter body.

Beat ARAI figure: 25.44 KMPL
Swift ARAI figure: 22.9
Difference: 11% (Beat is 11% more fuel efficient)

Beat Engine: 936 CC
Swift Engine: 1248 CC
Difference: 33% (Swift engine is 33% larger)

It is believed that the new small car from TATA stable KITE will sport the same Nano design theme and it might be based on the Nexon concept showcased in New Delhi earlier this year.
Initial design from Motor Beam gives the idea of product to come and my first reaction from the sketches was its like tall Honda Brio .
Looks inspiring

Not sure if Kite is a platform and will there be Kite 1 and 2?

Kite 4, Kite 5 are Indica & Indigo replacements.

Quote:
The Kite 4, which will replace the Indica, will sit between the Nano and Bolt, the world’s most affordable car set to get more expensive with the introduction of more feature loaded variants. Both the Kite 4 and Kite 5 are based on the Indica platform, which has been revised heavily and styling has been given high emphasis. That’s the reason why the Kite 4 and Kite 5 will not look anything like the company’s current cars. Tata Motors is investing heavily in getting the appearance of their vehicles right

I don't quite know if Kite is the code name for an all-new platform, a heavily modified platform or just an Indica/Indigo platform with fresher styling (much like the Bolt & Zest) - I do hope it is the first case.

Tata's recent code names seem to have a bird's name and a number - 4 for hatchback, 5 for compact (sub-4m) sedan. Thus the Falcon 4 & Falcon 5 turned out to be the Bolt & Zest, while Kite 4 & Kite 5 will be a hatchback and compact sedan to replace the Indica & Indigo.

I think Kite is just a code name for the new cars just like Falcon 4 & 5, but going by the sketches it looks like the Bolt front radiator grill will be the design theme for most of the upcoming cars from Tata. If the production version is anywhere near the sketch from Motorbeam then it will be quite a looker. A 3 pot revotron engine just like the ecoboost from Ford would be mouth watering.

Some good moves there by Tata. Whats heartening as per the report is that it is a tall boy design like the Nano.

IMO it makes perfect sense as it offers a lot more space for the same road occupied with ease for the passengers in terms of ingress etc.

Hope this product does good for them as 1.5 lakh volume seems to be quite an agressive target given that diesels are on the wane for small cars read Beat and they should convince buyers with a competent petrol motor.

Default Tata Kite Spotted

Tata's small car has been spotted doing test runs near Tata's Pune factory. The car is codenamed 'Kite' and is likely to roll out of Tata Motors' Sanand plant.

Also, in the picture, Tata Nano AMT has been sighted. The Nano key addition to the Nano will be the Magnetti Marelli-built F-Tronic AMT along with an openable hatch and a few other cosmetic changes.
