From what I gather, the Q501/502 won't be real mud pluggers as they won't have a transfer case with low ratios. Instead, Tata is aiming for maximum commonality in power train with the Fiat Jeep Renegade. Hence the choice of Fiat 2.2 multi jet motor with the associated gearbox. Tata at present doesn't have a large engine configured for transverse mounting and a transverse gearbox to take up all the torque. Retaining the Freelander power train would make the vehicle too expensive to be labelled a Tata. They are looking to change the supplier for the AWD system from the one on the Aria. This one's a diversified global major, so off-road capability should be better than Aria / XUV.

Yet another attempt at reducing the wheelbase to neutralize the stretched look.

The Q501 and Q502 are rumoured to have been codenamed Kestrel and Goshawk respectively.

Wow! Just when I thought Suzuki's Fronx name was funny. Here comes the Kestrel (Castrol Oil) and Goshawk (Shawshank Redemption?)!

Why can't they bring back the Sierra and The Estate names? Those were very classy. Oh wait! They burnt their fingers reusing the Indica/Indigo/Sumo name so... it's alright!

Both are names of birds. Just trying to emulate the success of Swift?

Why can't these manufacturers come up with some stylish names?

These are just codenames for the concepts. If you remember, the Zest and Bolt were called Falcon, the upcoming Sumo is called Raptor, the new hatchback is called Kite, and so on. The final product will have different names.

Kestrel and Goshawk are not bad names. Imagine what would happen if they called a vehicle owl or vulture.

These are supposed to be code names for the projects. Just like Falcon4/5 were the code names for Bolt/Zest. I am sure they'll bear a different name when launched in the market.

Is it just me or does the SUV actually look outdated even before launch.
I am hoping it is the render.
Hope tata only incorporates the good bits from Land Rover and we dont see any of the infamous Land Rover issues.
Looking forward to the launch as I need to replace my Duster in 2016.

A bit OT : All the names are of Raptors. Nice naming concept for concepts actually, if you ask me.

Googled the names and found them to be of birds species!

OK, I like them now.

Anyway, I hope they name it well as going by what Indian public themselves name the car differently e.g. Sumo becomes Somu, Octavia become Octiva, and Laura becomes... well. In short, a car with a good name increases its appeal.

Tata had also showcased an Armoured Personnel Carrier called Kestrel during some defexpo.
Developed with DRDO.

Sharing the Wiki page on the same : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TATA_Kestrel

Going by the names & the bird size, I think Kestrel would be compact SUV & Goshawk a full size SUV.

I think Tata Sumo is named after the architect of Tata Motors, SUmant MOolgaokar!

As far as Indian version of Tata SUV is concerned, probably all we can expect in so called new models is some stickers here and there and chrome fittings in extra places. It would be the same old Safari. Regarding the fit and finish,we can expect the same, that Tata is reputed for,in providing us!

Please do take the pain to test drive the Zest to start with. Also try Storme & Aria if you have time. I would like to know your feedback on TATA cars after personally "experiencing" it.
