Could this be the Brio-based SUV?
Highly unlikely. It's a seven-seater:

Japanese magazine illustrates the Brio-based crossover destined for India.

The magazine expects the new crossover to appear in dealerships in 2017

I just hope the SUV is not sub 4m cutting out all the interior space. The Jazz platform would have been ideal, but economics may not work for Honda. The fate of the new gen Jazz itself is not clear

Even if the car was an extended Brio/Jazz with more interior space and quality, I am sure there will be takers.

I have seen the Brio based vehicle being carried on a flat bed truck on Paud Road in Pune.
It is just a station-wagon rear on the Amaze. The rear end had black cladding preventing me from seeing weather there was a third row of seats there.
The vehicle is no SUV same clearance as the Brio / Amaze, it is to an Amaze what the Marina was to the Indigo.

Honda Brio based CUV might be launched by 2016. A year when ,most manufacturers will have their portfolio of Cuv's lined up.

It will face stiff competition from Maruti's XA Alpha, VW's yet to be named CUV, not forgetting the existing Ecosport, Terrano and Duster!

Brazil’s Car and Driver renders the CUV,

The SUV is being developed explicitly for the emerging markets and hence it is likely that the SUV will be launched in India also. If we go by rumours, the SUV is likely to be launched in India by 2016.

Under the bonnet we expect to see a 1.5 litre, i-VTEC petrol generating power in the petrol variants. Diesel range of Brio based SUV is likely to come equipped with the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Both the engines power new City line-up, hence we expect that the Brio based SUV will be frugal enough

Honda's Brio based CUV could debut in late 2016.

Quote:
Set for unveil later this year in October at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the Brio based compact SUV is being developed for emerging markets as an alternative to the Vezel compact SUV (HR-V in the US) that is currently on sale in Japan and other developed markets. The automaker chose to stick to the Brio platform that has been very successful for Honda churning out the Brio hatchback, Amaze compact sedan and most recently the Mobilio MPV.

Honda will display the 7 seater CUV/SUV most likely in the Auto Expo 2016. Launch in 2016

The car will be based on the Mobilio platform with better interiors than the all palstic as seen in the Mobilio.
The CUV will take on Duster/ Terrano and even Mahindra's XUV.

Honda compact SUV to get seven seats - alternate to the Vezel, a compact SUV for international markets was proving too costly to produce in India.

Honda Cars India recently took their top dealers to the company’s R&D facilities in Japan and showed them, for the first time, the freshly developed compact SUV for the Indian market. However, its not as compact as we thought it would be. Honda is supposedly planning a seven-seat version of this new SUV which will rival the likes of both the Renault Duster and the Mahindra XUV500.

The new SUV will share underpinnings with the Mobilio and although the front section may share bits with the MPV, it is expected to come with all the trappings of an SUV like larger wheels, aggressive body cladding and skid plates all round. Honda India received a fair deal of criticism for the basic interiors on the Mobilio, Amaze and Brio, and hence, this upcoming SUV is expected to get an all-new and high-quality cabin.

There is no news on the mechanicals but it's likely Honda will use the same 1.5-litre petrol and diesel motors as on the Mobilio.

Wow! So Honda is planning to have a 7-seater compact SUV and a 5-seater full-size SUV for India.

Does compact mean something else in Japanese?

I think the article means that the 7 seater SUV based on Brio is still cheaper to make for the Indian market as compared to the 5 seater Vezel (based on Jazz).

There is no 5 seater SUV coming.

By 5-seater full-size SUV, I meant the CRV. Vezel is also a compact SUV.

Thanks. Got your point now. However, the 7 seater may still be a lot more compact that the 5 seater CRV.

Mobilio measures 4386*1683*1603mm. The SUV is said to be based on the same platform and as per AutocarIndia- might even share the face with the MUV except for SUV bits added. So I would expect almost similar dimensions.

The Duster which is a compact SUV measures 4315mm in length. Honda might be looking to squeeze in another row of seats, which would be a first (save for the home grown XUV) in that segment, with only a slight increase in length.

CRV on the other hand measures 4545*1820*1685. That's significantly larger than the Mobilio platform.

This is good news. I was never in awe of the duster but the car has been a pretty good performer as per the reviews of people here. Best bit is that it's decent for city driving and can comfortably scale those rugged peaks if you're looking to take it for a weekend getaway to the mountains.

I'll probably be considering Honda's offering when I trade in my ageing civic next year.

Honda's upcoming SUV could be be inspired by the concept Vision XS-1.
