Default SCOOP! Tata Vista Tech caught doing the rounds

Tata Motors, globally known as the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, was the third largest manufacturer here in India. But, improper business decisions and the infamous Tata A.S.S saw that position drift from a respectable 3 to a 5.
Yes, Tata now is the fifth manufacturer in India.

Actually, the main problem with Tata hatch line-up is lack of any strong convincing reason to buy one:
  • Want a spacious hatch? Buy the Liva!
  • Want a VFM hatch? Buy the Figo
  • Want a luxurious hatch? Buy the i20
  • Want a Fun-To-Drive hatch with an equally good A.S.S? Buy the Swift
  • Want just a Fun-To-Drive hatch? Buy the Punto
  • Want German engineering? Buy the Polo
..... and the list goes on

The only convincing car in their line-up is Safari. But sadly even this contemporary product is suffering from lacklustre sales. The sales numbers of Indica and Vista prove the aforementioned fact. But now, the tables are set to turn. Tata is set to introduce the Falcon range of hatch and sedan. Even Tata knows it has lost many a sale due to it's unexciting line-up. Tata head-honchos are bullish about their new line-up.

The Falcon range would be launched sometime in the end-of-this-year or the next year. But the current Indica Vista won't be discontinued. It would be launched in a Tech variant soon.

One can see the Tech badge under the ORVM. On the interiors front, it would have the same dashboard, equipment and features as the recently discontinued Vista D90 but the catch here is that the 1.3 MJD would produce 75 HP instead of 90 HP in the D90.

The next news item is that Tata is set to launch Nano Twist on 13th of January, that is on the day of Lohri (atleast in Punjab). Externally, the vehicle has no differences outside except the twist badges and a new Damson Purple colour that was shown on the Nano concept.

The power-steering unit, developed by ZF friedrichshafen ag took 1.5 years to develop and is now finally available. The steering ratio is said to be same as the Manual version and the PS uses a brushless motor.

The interiors have an all-new instrument cluster. The font style on the speedometer is new with the fuel and temperature guages located on either side of speedo. The two guages are LED's and digital trip meter is repositioned.

The likely price increment should be in the range of ₹15,000 over the top-spec Nano. It would be launched in two variants, XC and XT.

Instead of going for great gadgetry and naming conventions that project the old wine in a new bottle, let the TATA's Tech team do a simple act-CHANGE THE GRILL / FRONT FACE. As many a Team Bhpian has been advicing the Indian automotive giant for a while now, this small act would do wonders to the new line up of cars

Wake up Tata, the market doesn't need the same old boring nomenclature and boring facelifts.
Invest in new products, get a new design theme and add new tech to those cars rather than adding them to same old uninspiring cars.

This clearly reflects the fact that Tata team is not tuned with the requirements, demands and changing taste of the Indian market. Neither do they seem to be learning anything from the competition.

By the time they will come out with the falcon range, they would have lost most of their customer base and the entire range would look like obsolete.

What is the guarantee that the Falcon would be a complete new range. It can turn out to be a Safari story where the existing car was rebadged with certain changes as Tata Storm. For Tata engineers it was an all new car, but all of us have seen that it has not been able to generate any kind of excitement in the market.

Assuming that this "Tech" decently equipped and priced accordingly, wonder where are they going to position the all new Falcon HATCH ? Or Is it also coming with the spare mounted at the rear?

Umm, I guess you're mistaken here. The Falcon is their new range of products (a Compact Sedan and a Hatch), which would completely ditch the old Tata styling (Thank God for that!) and the Falcon has been doin' rounds for quite some time now. It is slated for a late 2014 or an early 2015 launch.

This Vista Tech would be positioned a full level lower and Falcon would become their answer to the B2 segment while the Falcon 5 would compete in the C1 segment.

lol, I read the heading as Tata Vista Tech Caught Doin' donuts

OK, When WE KNOW that they're not going to be able to make any major design changes till 2015, then I guess theres no point in repeating the same old criticism.

I don't want to talk down any product without giving it its rightful opportunity to present itself during its launch.

Till then, lets wait, they've decided to use what they have as a canvas to implement new technologies. Like for example, they offered a 6" touchscreen music player and navigation in a regular hatchback with 90PS power. Which other company offered such stuff for a VFM hatchback?

So, this time theres some new tech called Human Machine Interface that TATA is implementing with the Vista. Lets wait and see what they've done this time with the Vista. (Edit : Or was it in Falcon?)

The new Nano's instrument cluster is definitely a great improvement over the old one, good to know it doesn't come at a premium.

Not really much of a fan of Power Steering for a tiny car like the Nano. Anyway, theres also some news about another variant supposedly called Nano Plus, one which comes with front PS, Disc brakes & open able rear glass. Hope that too is launched.

Tata Motors is already in the middle of the 2016 Vista's design. Wait till you guys see it. It is a massive step forward. Completely new design language. Falcon 4 is cold tea in comparison. That's it for now.

Cheers,

Jay

The Tata Vista will now be available in 4 variants (2 variants per engine and two engines are being offered). The TDI and Quadrajet 75 are the engines on offer with both offered in the base LS trim while the top-end variant on the TDI motor is LX and the top-end trim on the Quadrajet 75 mill is the VX Tech.

Since the Tata Vista Tech is the replacement of the Vista D90, it carries all the features from it. This includes the dashboard from the Manza which puts the instrument cluster where it belongs, right in front of the driver. The Vista Tech also gets a driver information system which displays instantaneous mileage, average fuel efficiency, digital clock and distance to empty. The car comes with a multimedia touchscreen system with GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, audio video playback, USB, AUX, CD, etc. The company calls its Bluetooth system as Blue 5 Technology.

The tagline of the Vista Tech is “Designed To Thrill” and the car is offered in four colours namely grey, white, silver and a new chill blue. The exteriors get the Tech badging along with some graphics below the front windows.

It looks like only the Vista VX Tech gets the Manza's dashboard. And even the VX Tech does not get airbags, rear wash-wipe, defogger, rear adjustable headrests etc. So in essence, the Vista continues as it is for now, with the D90's VX and ZX+ variants being replaced by the 75PS VX Tech.

The 65PS Safire engine seems to have been discontinued, but the old TDI continues to slog on.

It's nothing but a minor repositioning move by Tata to make room for the facelifted Falcon4 variants of the Vista with the 90PS Quadrajet and ~ 80PS turbo-petrol engines.

The brochure says "limited edition". This could mean the entire Vista line-up, or at least the Tech variant, could be replaced by the Falcon4 facelifted model in the near future. Them why introduce the Vista Tech at all?

The Tech and the Twist might sound fancy, but the reality is that these variants have arrived a bit late in the game to have any significant impact on the sales of the Vista and Nano.

Product development still seems to be moving at snails pace at Tata. It has taken them years to introduce a power steering variant in the Nano. Now the wait for the openable rear hatch variant. What are they going to call that...the Teaser ?!

Both the Vista and the Nano are capable cars by themselves in their segments. The only issue here is the TATA badge which has now become the other name for taxi, unrefined, unreliable and not so great A$$.

However if we weigh the vehicles on their own some of their vehicles are quite good and defy the perceptions. Take the Vista, Manza, Nano and yes the Sumo which have stood up on the reliability front. The only thing that needs for these to sell is an image make over of the brand to detach itself from the negative associated with it and move on to get private car users.

One thing that might even help is to clearly demarcate the commercially sold cars versus the private segment like the Indica V2, Indigo CS, Vista TDi, Sumo can be sold exclusively in their commercial arm dealerships and Vista Quadrajet, Manza, Safari and the Nano in the passenger car dealerships. This may not be very difficult at all since they have these two divisions and sales points already. Only thing is that this point should be driven home to the customers. The same formula for their service centers too.

For Vista, better positioning of instrument cluster was more required compared to 90ps engine. Vista Tech VX is a step in that direction. At the same time, there should not be any hike from the current price of Vista VX 75ps.

When a company releases 'Limited editions', it might be two things - the boffins wanted some stock clear outs or sort of a last hurrah before a new platform comes in, Or celebrate a successful model to ride the wave. In Tata's case, it is surely the former. A very desperate attempt to boost sales? They must go back to the drawing board, get more focused and come up with better products.
