Yes, but Ford have so much respct for Volvo that they let Volvo take the lead in safety areas and product development. amazingly, it is one of the very few Ford entities which turns a profit, that too from a high cost country

I own the facelifted version of the previous generation (also first) from 2005, finished in Black Sapphire Metallica and with Light Sand (Tan) leather interiors with wood finish. Absolutely pristine and a proper, handsome and reliable car. Love it!

Will be good to see the new/older S80 in India...it's all good. I reckon it'll be priced around 26 lakhs for the base model.

Its very early to come to a conclusion on the success of Volvo in the Indian market. I would not compare cars with trucks, but when the Volvo FM12 truck was introduced, many people said that they wont sell a single piece. Volvo BR7 buses are perhaps the best buses we have on Indian roads. Volvo's products are much technogically advanced than any current Indian manufacturer.

History has the sales of Volvo trucks & buses written. Indian car buyers are evolving. Its not just racy and cool looking design that sells. Brand image, VFM, safety, features etc all are car buying criteria.

Lets wait and watch how Volvo positions itself in India.

For good sales in the premium segment, one must have jaw-dropping design or some really cool features, or must be a very well-known brand.

Volvos have a reputation for being safe, sturdy and reliable. I read somewhere that some of the older volvo cars have run 300000 miles and still going strong. Volvos have a great reputation as police cars in Sweden and other countries, like UK. So maybe ministers and high officials of our Govt., including elite police and military officers, will be tempted to switch to Volvos.

Note Volvo cars belong to Ford. Volvo sold the cars division to ford and retained the trucks and used the cash to build factories in India etc. Bold but good strategy

Now that one Swedish car maker associated with luxury and safety is India bound, I hope that the other Swedish car maker known for aircraft technology and sporty cars follows Volvo into India. I have always preferred Saab over Volvo and I would love to see their cars in India. Boy would it be exciting!

Some pics of the Saab 9-3

Saab 9-3 prices US are $26,620 to 32,620 which is roughly from Rs. 12.25 Lacs to 15.00 lacs.

Unfortunately, Saabs have lost their way under GM, present 9-3 is a competent car but is basically a Vectra underneath. It does not have the eccentricity of the older Saabs

Why has Ford brought Volvo to India ahead of Jaguar?
The answers are simple.
1. Volvos are more affordable
2. The brand Volvo is fairly established in India
3. Volvo is the only division of Ford's PAG that is making profits.
Add to these, Volvo quality is pretty good and "Volvo" and "safety" are words that go with each other.

In one news item, I read that the cars will be priced between 25 L to 1 Cr. !!!! Who the hell would pay 1 Cr. for aVolvo (probable the top end S80 or X90).

For that kind of money u can buy 2 X5s!(Well almost..... )

For 1 Cr you can have a Volvo B7R and a Merc in your stable... ...... I dont know why they are not aiming for a bracket of 6L - 16 L? This is the fast growing bracket of India.... I dont know.. do they have cars in this range?? I dont know much about Volvo cars..

Cheers

Volvo do not make a car worth Rs 1 Cr - expect the XC90 to be 10% cheaper than a merc m

Volvo's are real real safe. I owned a white 1993 240SE wagon at Bangalore some 8 months back. Had to give it up as I moved abroad.

Once had a total tyre burst at 120kmhh on the Bangalore -Chennai highway with all my family inside the car. The control was fantastic, even on the burst, just did not feel any pull or offtracking but perfect stability. The tyre was a total washout. Till then I had only heard that Volvos are safe but had a realtime experience.

BTW, the car is still in Bangalore, I gave it to my friend, so can still drive it around whenever I visit Bangalore.
