Although a little late, but a good move by Mahindra. The XUV takes its desirability quotient a notch above. I do think that Push Button Start/Keyless Entry will be missed by some buyers as being feature laden is one of the USPs XUV possesses.

By the way, my first post on Team-BHP. Feels great !

Does anybody have any insight on the reason for deleting the engine start/stop button and passive keyless entry on the AT?

Is this just to keep the prices in check ?

A good move by Mahindra. Quite late, but good move nevertheless.
From whatever my friends who drove it yesterday told, looks like the automatic box is pretty competent. People who stayed away from the XUV due to the long travel clutch and notchy gearbox (1st and 2nd gears), would be very happy with the development.

Dropping engine start/stop and few other things from W10 was not needed. Also providing buttons on the gearshift for +/- in manual mode instead of paddle shifters. Very inconvenient implementation.

Overall, I am happy that the XUV is a more complete product now.

Good for competition.

Provides the urban cross-shopper looking at the overpriced VAG DSG cars like the Octavia & Jetta with a spacious, relatively trouble-free, good resale 'Indian' SUV option.

Plus Aisin is a big name in auto-boxes and unlikely to fold up like the earlier supplier. Hence long term maintenance (5 years+) and parts availability should not be a worry any more.

My favourite 15 lakh SUV finally gets a much needed tool to compete in the segment! In this price band (and above), customers simply prefer AT gearboxes. Can't wait to test-drive her.

The 1 lakh price premium was expected as the Creta diesel AT also has exactly that (13.77 lakhs vs 12.77 for the MT).

Yes, it is late to the market....4 years since the XUV500's launch. But as long as the gearbox is competent, I'm not complaining.

If I am in the market today for a 7 seater diesel Automatic and I have at max 20 Lacs to spare, there is simply no other option than visit the Mahindra Showroom.
  • If I need something compact or cheaper, I can choose the TUV300 with AMT.
  • If I need something a bit more bigger, I can pick the Scorpio A/T.
  • If I am willing to stretch my budget even more, I can have the XUV5OO A/T.
XUV5OO is a complete package - it has a very spacious cabin, great seats, ample amount of features to play with, good safety features, the ride is good and the handling is nice too. The mHawk is a hoot to drive. Yes, some did complain that it badly needs a A/T - either due to rising congestion in cities or simply due to the notchy gearbox! Whatever the reason - XUV5OO A/T is simply a great vehicle to own this side of 20 Lacs. The A/T will take out the stress in city traffic and the mHawk will keep you happy on the open highways.

Why can't Mahindra give AT option across the variants. I expect this offer atleast in their premier offering XUV. I think lots of prospective buyers will be choosing XUV automatic if the choice is extended across the variants. Some of the buyers of C category sedans like City/Vento/ Ciaz might consider switching to XUV if they offer AT option across the variants. Even W8 AWD variant doesn't get an AT. I wonder why?

My hunch is they want to keep the auto box as a premium offering and dont get me wrong, I am completely onboard with your viewpoint

Probably has to do with Maintaining too much stock which may not be fast moving.

W10 AWD AT would qualify as premium most variant for those who want every thing. W10 FWD AT as the premium most FWD AT model for those who just don't want AWD and W8 FWD AT as the best value AT with most required features included.

W8 AWD AT would end up being and ultra niche offering. Though I do get why it should be considered.

Registered in M&M website, got a call from their office [Pune, may be ?] and took all my details and passed it onto the Bangalore dealer.
Got the call from the dealership as well within next 2 hours and updates as below.

1) Bookings open for XUV500 AT, didn't care to enquire how much it is since I am not planning to book without seeing the stick myself

2) Vehicle reaching Siresh Auto on or after Dec 8th [not before that for sure].

Anyone having better information in Bangalore dealership ?

Prem.

My speculation is that start/stop button and the energy recuperation have been omitted not as cost cutting but more in terms of complexity with the gearbox.

The start/stop was designed to work with the clutch pedal and had some circuitry to work with the MT. Now with the AT they would need to re-engineer that with the brakes and take care of other permutations as well. It was simpler to just remove that feature with the AT and go back to the old key type.

Same for the brake energy which was related to clutch not being pressed, being in the gear and coasting. This would need to be completely reengineered to work with the AT box and would lead to some complexity.

On the safer side they have removed the 2 features that have some association with the transmission electronics.

For the convenience of an AT, nobody will miss these 2 features.
