Boom Shiva:

I see a strong likeness between a Suzuki Swift and
the head of an Arabian dromedary (one-humped camel).

I had sketched my impression on 30th Jan 2006, and posted it at
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/171172-post30.html (Would you buy the Diesel Swift?)

The image file was hosted at http://xs66.xs.to/pics/06051/camelswift.jpg
Being almost six-months old, the picture hosting site "http://xs.to" has lost that picture.
One of my computers at home in Mumbai, would have a copy on one of its hard-disk drives.
I will try to retrieve it, this weekend and show it to you, failing which I will sketch it again.

Granted that you won't find Maruti 800 on US freeways.
But even in 1985, 3 door Suzuki Swifts were sold in the USA.

Ram
well, apart from being intimidated by other cars, i feel the freeways are designed keeping american cars in mind. I see compact cars running on freeways as well, but on the right lane and often blocking regular traffic. They find it difficult to tackle the manouvering equired, and sometimes the ups and downs on the roads. Precise reason why american market for small cars is close to nil (unless it's a mini or VW). compare that with indian market.

In 1985, quite posible that that was the norm. but today they seem to be out of place.

But I still like to mention that there are many cars in india that will cause jams if run on US freeways and will be removed immediately, not just M800s. I shud have said age old commuter cars in india, rather than M800.

I don't think so. I have seen lots of rickety rusting cars running on the freeways here.

And North American driving standards are the pits! But that's a different topic.

I didn't say they are in production, did I?

anyway, I don't think I am able to convey my point, it seems to be deviating after every response of mine. I rest my case. I myself have deviated from the topic of the post.

Edit: We hope you are not expecting that in this thread, because that would be OT. -Mod Team

That was funny.

It is true and even I have seen that IT pros do not usually buy flashy cars. I have even seen them riding Wagon R and Zens. Some men try to hide themselves even though they can easily buy Camrys.

How many IT people buy a car which costs more than their annual salary. Now would that make them "flashy" or the car that they bought, flashy? A guy earning 3 lakhs buying a car worth 5+ ?

What if the most expensive car that anyone owns in your company of 1000 people is an Innova? Now if someone in the lower ranks buys a Corolla/Skoda/Civic does that make the car flashy?

I'm in that league and let me tell you I've been branded as having a flashy car, rich, working just for the heck of it, snobbish and probably many more that has been said behind my back. :-) Its absolutely funny to watch people's reaction (especially the higher ups) when they see me in my car. Worth the money !!

Buying expensive cars or other stuff is a matter of personal choice and people have their likes. For instance some spend on $20k music systems and $50k watches though they may live in simple homes and drive cheap cars. Some drive costly cars but live in modest homes. You can see lots of costly Mercs. parked in front of cheap flats in cities like HK/Singapore. The cars probably cost the owners much more than their entire flat!

Safety is a big issue in Indian cities so it makes sense to go for one or two classes below what you can comfortably afford. For those not passionate about cars, spending more than 5-6 months earnings or 5% of net worth requires some justification, imho. Because car is a depreciating asset that too these days when new models come every month. For those passionate about them, sky is the limit, dont care what others say!

I think when people refer to IT pros generally they are referring to Bangalore/Madras folks. Generally they are not flashy whether or not in IT. Delhi-ites are much more flashy and would look at things differently, be it cars/dress etc.
