Default Re: Fiat eyes taxi market in Kolkata after Ambassador's exit

Fiat has a clearly defined strategy. The current CEO, is an enthusiast whose eyes light up when he speaks about engines, transmissions and setups.
I think it is about volumes - when you are selling only 1000-1200 cars per month, it makes sense to position an older shell (Linea) as a Taxi whilst targeting enthusiasts with cars like the GP, 500, Avventura. They desperately need a mass market mover (2000+ per month) to shore up their car business. The engine bubble can burst anytime, esp. with Suzuki developing their own oil burner and the Diesel Petrol decision going the other way

The Linea is not a very good choice for a Taxi in Kolkata.

The first requirement of a cabbie is to have a low maintenance vehicle. Spare parts for the Linea are not available off the shelf anywhere.
The other criteria is the space in the back. The linea rear seat is not big enough to fit 3 large sized adults with their bags and the tar less roads will wreak havoc on the suspension. A better strategy would have been to position the Palio 1.3 MJD as the Taxi replacement for the Indica.

Palio has had its fair share of reliability issues and it's a faded star, so I assume it's difficult for it to be pushed even in the taxi segment. Both the Linea and Punto don't have decent space in the back so it's hard to imagine taxi operators pick them over the rest.
