As GTO pointed out, this year's title would be a close race between two cars - Zest and i20. Between the two, I have voted for the Zest purely because of the quantum leap that Tata made in the Zest vis-a-vis it's previous models. They were criticized left, right and center, their cars ended up being sales duds one after the other and there were a few who felt the writing is on the wall for Tata Motors. Ignoring all these, Tata silently worked its way through and the Zest is a huge shift. It has to be seen to be believed. I had perceptions too, but it all went to dust when I took a test drive.

The Zest is a game-changer for Tata (and so for Indian cars) and it deserves to be Team-BHP Car of the Year!

My vote for the Elite i20. Irrespective of certain feature and security misses, Hyundai has redefined premium in this segment making its earlier version look an eyesore. Moreover, the fact that Hyundai enhanced the handling of this vehicle by leaps shows their commitment as a manufacturer willing to listen to its customer.

Notable mention - Tata Zest. Had this car been from another manufacturer, this might have been on 'expected' lines. Coming from a reeling Tata, this deserves all the praise for an Indian manufacturer truly wanting to be part of the game by focusing on the right areas instead of just price or national pride.

Was all ready to vote for the Ciaz but then after driving it, I came back a little disappointed with its lack of Suzuki-like handling or raw power. Great package otherwise.

My next choice was going to have been the Corolla; I mean it is an iconic car so obviously its latest generation ought to be awesome. Then Toyota's arrogant attitude towards safety and the slightly cheap looking interiors just disgusted me.

The new Mahindra Scorpio was a brilliant effort and it is easy to see how much the car has improved due to the new chassis. However ergonomic faults and slightly flashy design in a few places, proves that the company still needs time to mature.

The new German offerings are just a joke while the C-Class is excellent, it is simply too expensive.

That left me with the Datsun Go. A car I had scoffed at however after seeing it in the flesh and driving it, I believe it has revolutionized what a cheap barebones small hatchback can offer. It comes with space, enough power and an impressively sorted suspension so in that sense, they got the basics right.

Voted City for its overall package. It was a tough choice. Zest would be my second choice but only let down due to poor TATA service. A3 and GLA were solid contenders as well. Only if they were a bit more mass market.

Frankly speaking, did not find any of the cars "interesting" this year comparing to previous year's winners like Eco-sport and Duster. So, voted for Zest, as Tata has done a good job in producing a car with good quality. Hope they improve their A.S.S too.

Voted for i20 Elite - design, practicality, space, features, and build quality.

Zest seems to be a very promising product. Too early to comment as it comes from Tata.

Voted for the Zest.

Looks good. Feels good. Has an good backup. (Yes, Tata HAS improved!)

Bloody efficient. Oh, and for that lovely Revotron as well.

The Elite i20 is a good car, but I feel Fiat should drag Hyundai to court.

And here's why-

The Elite i20's backside. Familiar enough, eh? Now for this-

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta
. The Italians surely know how to design cars, eh? But, there's more than an uncanny resemblance between the Alfetta, and the Korean crate.

Also-

The 2010 Alfa Romeo 159.

As is evident, there's more than an uncanny resemblance between the Alfettas, and the Korean crate. Fiat, where art thou?

Let the action be taken!

That said, WHERE exactly is the Avventura? It is a new model, and is very much launched in 2014. If the Zest is present, why not this petite Fiat?

Voted for Tata Zest....My reasons .

a. True VFM machine...
b. Considering the lot that is riding on this car for TATA, the way they balanced things with Zest is great.
c. Most important for me, I'm always a SUV lover, but am seriously considering changing my preference. Thats what Zest has done to me.

After the test drive of a zest AMT diesel, I did not find any reason to read out the complete list here.
The Tata Zest it has to be!

Thumbs up re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2014. EDIT: Tata Zest it is!

I went through the list and some of the names which popped up are:
  • Zest
  • Elite i20
  • City
  • Ciaz
  • Scorpio
  • Corolla

Its a pleasure to see such a tight competition and its going to be a tough voting for me so i need some time out.

ps: The Avventura has not been mentioned , is it because it has been launched too late and would be considered in 2015? (in any case i don't think it would have become the car of the year with such tight competition , its just going to be "My car of the year" )

My vote went to Suzuki Celerio!

1. An Auto(AMT) for the masses! Magnelli and Suzuki has done a wonderful job innovating!
2. A leap in terms of quality for Suzuki small cars
3. With Maruti's backup what can go wrong!

The two runner-ups would be Honda Mobilio (For giving a quality fear of God to Segment leader Suzuki Ertiga!) and Tata Zest (a quality product backed up by servicing we've all been waiting for from an Indian Auto maker - TATA)

The Avventura is identical to a regular Fiat Punto, save for the location of the spare wheel & higher ground clearance. These are the only major differences. It doesn't meet the requirements outlined in the opening post. Neither the Etios Cross nor the Cross Polo were considered in earlier COTYs.

Lets not take the thread anymore off-topic.

I am not trying to be sarcastic , but would really like to know what makes you state that.

Coming to the topic of the thread, Excited to see the message from GTO in the inbox. I have voted for the Zest .
I am pleased to see the Zest leading the poll. I am sure many voters actually are the ones who want Tata to succeed inside there heart , but Tata motors simply haven't given them enough reasons to believe in them.
Finally with the Zest , the patriotism and the love for Tata Motors is playing a part too.
Zest is a much better package for it's segment given the other choices.

Elite i20: was a close second one : What looks man . 1st hyundai that is appealing to my eyes.
