Default 2015: Updated Mercedes A & B-Class launched

Mercedes-Benz has launched the facelifted 2015 B-Class sports tourer at a price of between Rs 27.95 - Rs 28.95 lakhs (ex-Mumbai). The German car maker has also launched the A-Class with a new diesel engine.

  • Prices B-Class: B 180 Sport petrol (Rs 27.95 lakhs) / B 200 CDI Sport (Rs 28.95 lakhs)
  • Prices A-Class: A 180 Sport petrol (Rs 25.95 lakhs) / A 200 CDI Sport (Rs 26.95 lakhs)
  • Both, the A and B-Class now share their diesel engines with the CLA and GLA-Class. The petrol engines remain the same as before.
  • Diesel: 2,143 cc, inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 134 BHP @ 3,200-4,000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque @ 1,400-3,000 rpm). The B 200 CDI does the 0-100 km/h run in a claimed 9.8 seconds with the top speed rated at 210 km/h. Claimed fuel economy = 19.7 km/l
  • The A 200 CDI produces the same output figures, but the peak power is delivered at 3,600-4,400 rpm, while the peak torque kicks in at 1,600-3,000 rpm.
  • Petrol: 1,595 cc, inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 121 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque @ 1,250-4,000 rpm.
  • Both, petrol and diesel variants of the A and B-Class come mated to a 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
  • The B-Class facelift gets new front and rear bumpers, a new front grille, new 16-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, LED headlamps, reworked tail-lamps and body contours on the exterior. On the inside, the car gets a new 3-spoke steering wheel, new instrument cluster, 7-inch display for the COMAND interface, Garmin SD card navigation and seats draped in Artico leather.
  • The panoramic sunroof now comes as standard on the A-Class. The car also gets 16-inch wheels (instead of 17'') and Mercedes says that the suspension has been re-tuned for improved comfort.
  • Mercedes-Benz will launch 12 more products in 2015.

The A 200 CDI Sport is powered by the 2.1-litre oil burner as well (134 BHP @ 3,600-4,400 rpm and 300 Nm torque @ 1,600-3,000 rpm). Neither the A, nor the B-Class get hydraulic struts for the bonnet:

A 200 badging reflects the car's increased power and torque output. Power to weight ratio jumps from 71 to 88 BHP per ton. Torque to weight goes up from 166 to 198 Nm per ton:

I don't know what is it, but the A class seems to have lost its sporty stance, Maybe its the 16 inch wheels, maybe the reduce in rubber section, may be raise in ride height.
Anyway, like the B class, when is the A class expected?

Mercedes must be kidding if they expect the B-Class to sell with an on-road price between 34 - 37 lakhs . Any car in this segment needs to have an air of desirability around it. B-Class? Naah. If I wanted utility, I'd buy an Innova.

Appeal might work in the A-Class' favour, but even in this case, the pricing keeps it as a niche low volume product only. Personally, I'd love to buy a used A-Class for the missus, but I wouldn't be caught dead in a B-Class.

It's gone from the huge 225/45 R17 wheels & tyres to a 205/55 R16 set.

The alloys shown are also very flat and boring. They look almost like they are locally sourced (design wise too).

Add to that, it certainly looks like they have increased the ride height of the earlier squat-sitting A-Class.

Now looking at the pricing of the B-Class and even the likes of GLA, CLA etc., the BMW 320d base version looks excellent value for money, atleast for now.

And maybe its just me, the interiors or Mercedes MFA models are too similar that it looks a bit boring now. There is nothing different between the A-Class (which was launched 2 years back) and the recently launched GLA/CLA.

You can say that again. This is the A-Class launched 2 years back:



I found the rear space much better in the B than even the C and 3 series. I currently own a Ford Endeavour. So going back to an Innova feels like a misstep or downgrade in car perception(albeit in perception alone and nothing else). The only thing i'd miss from the Endy would be the torque and the auto gearbox. Don't want people to ask me if i'm in financial trouble .

So i was seriously considering the B as it has the best legroom from the premium brands in the sub 50l range. Plus it makes most sense for my parents (both 50+) in terms of ingress/egress and legroom in the back.
And now with a few added luxuries like the LED headlight, the standard sunroof, the power bump, and the new COMAND system, it looks more enticing now!
