Default Tata Motors to launch six UVs over the next four years

In the market for utility vehicles in India, Tata Motors has been losing ground to its chief rival, Mahindra. The company is now planning a fightback and intends to launch six utility vehicles over the next 3-4 years. The range will include compact urban SUVs, rugged MUVs for rural markets and premium crossovers.

The first model to be launched will be the Hexa crossover. It is expected to hit showrooms in the first half of 2016. It will be pitted against the Mahindra XUV500.

The Hexa will be followed by a compact SUV based on the Nexon concept, which Tata showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo. This car will be less than four metres in length and feature a 5-seater interior. This vehicle is scheduled to be launched in the festive season of 2016 and will take on the Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Mahindra S101.

The third product in the line-up will be the Raptor (next-gen Sumo), a rugged utility vehicle which will target a rural audience. This will be Tata's rival for the Bolero. It is expected to be launched in late 2016. Click here to read about the next-gen Sumo

Tata Motors is also building two premium SUVs with inputs from Jaguar Land Rover, its British subsidiary. These vehicles, codenamed Q501 and Q502, are expected to be introduced in the second half of 2017.

The company is also considering two more SUVs - one a 7-seater SUV on the X1 platform (codenamed X107) and the other a 9-seater based on the X6 platform, codenamed X602.

Tata Motors has the Aria, Safari and Sumo in the utility vehicle segment. All these products have been trailing their rivals from Mahindra by large margins. With the new utility vehicles, Tata Motors will try to regain some of the ground it has lost over the year.

Aren't the timelines a bit too far out? An Ecosport rival in 'festival season' 2016 is nearly 18 months away, by which time the Ecosport itself will probably be playing catch-up to newer products. Other products mentioned are even further away, some nearly TWO years.

All this begs the question: WHAT have been Tata doing for the past 4-5 years? Bolt & Zest don't really count, because they aren't NEW products developed from scratch, just a rehash of their existing Vista platform. At this rate, Tata are at real risk of becoming irrelevant to the Indian passenger car customer before their next successful product comes along, if one ever does.

Headline screams six and there are seven planned.

I am not really sure whether I should be happy or sad.

All too late, but still hopeful tat the cars see the daylight, especially the Raptor Sumo and the Ecosport rival.

Regarding the two new SUVs under consideration wonder which is the 9 seater?

And which is the X6 platform? Haven't heard of it yet?

What has Maruti been doing with its Ecosport challenger since 2014 when it showcased in Auto Expo? Isn't it more than 2 years now?

We all demand an "all new" vehicle but at the same time, expect it within miraculous timelines.

It's a known fact that Tata has been a laggard, lost precious time and ceded market share to Mahindra and other competitors. Nevertheless, it's a great attempt by the Indian automobile giant to catch up!

The road map and products are promising, especially now that they are tapping into Jaguar / Land Rover expertise.

All this was sort of reported in ACI recently isnt it?

Hoping to see Hexa priced properly to take on the XUV, they priced the Zest well but messed up big time in the Bolt. Hope they price the Hexa sensibly.

Mahindra's updated UVs will already be out by then, one is already out, the updated Scorpio and we are spotting test mules regularly of all the other various Mahindras in pipeline. A good question to ask now, is that, will it be possible for Tata to come around? Especially since, historically the Automotive division had always been lead by people who had a keen interest and following of the passenger car market.

The first will be in 2016!! A bit too late I guess.

Hexa is just a reworked Aria from the looks of it. Why do they need so much time to launch it?
The 9 seater would be interesting though. Sure it is an SUV though? Sounds like a mini bus to me

Among the cars in pipeline, a 5-seater compact SUV based on Nexon concept and resembling a mini Evoque is expected to hit the market in later 2016. This will be pitted against Ford EcoSport.

Termed as Cyrus Mistry's own baby, a premium SUV called Hexa will be launched in the first half of 2016. The company is also working on regaining the rural market share by introducing a rugged SUV, called Raptor.

They should let mahindra make the first moves this time unlike with the Safari Aria and Storm and price accordingly.

Simple answer: Maruti can afford the delay, Tata can't.

The Indian market doesn't always work on sound logic or product merit alone. Purely on merit, some Maruti products are behind competition but they still top charts while competition finds it difficult to sell decent numbers.

Exactly, my friend.
So why should Tata Motors hurry up when they know the market does not work on logic and product merit?

They are testing the waters with Zest and Bolt. They will soon start an onslaught with future models. Let us wait. I'm sure a company thinks of all the necessary aspects before they invest huge cash.

I personally am following the Hexa closely, what with owning 2 Safari's over the past 9 years and i feel a bit jaded and not wanting to go the Storme way yet, and with nothing else in the price range, i am hoping they launch the Hexa soon.

Hurry up as in 'stay relevant', not 'push out half-baked products'. They're having trouble selling even their most iconic brand, the Safari. Says it all really. The Indian market doesn't have a good history or re-accepting out-of-favor brands, which Tata is fast turning into, if not already there.

Testing waters for what? Every segment they're 'planning' to enter beginning next year has already existed for a few years now, and they're handicapping themselves by waiting too long. It's a fine line, and Tata are already on the wrong side. Here's hoping they get back onside, for competition's sake if nothing else.

Testing waters for acceptance.

Even after rolling out a great product in Zest, people are still not buying! It's very clear that the low sales is due to the perception.

I personally think that, if current perception remains, Tata continues to launch high quality products into markets incurring massive investments & people continue to just laud it on forums and do not translate to appreciable sales numbers, Tata would be fine by just not burning up their capital quickly. Rather, they might fine tune their strategies.
