Good that VW is taking India seriously, but honestly what is the point if they insist on providing such brilliant service?

My father had to take his car in to get the RHS rear view mirror (reflector only) replaced after a biker knocked it off. The first tech said they would fix the mirror in a bit, and asked him to wait. After waiting the tech came back and said they were going for lunch, and would fix it after. In the mean time, another tech called and said that the assembly would need to be changed as well (adding some 600Rs to the cost). After a 30+ minute lunch break, a third tech came and said that the motor would need to be changed as well, adding 3k to the cost.

Dad told them politely to stuff it, bought the mirror and plastic frame (300 odd) and fixed it himself at home.

I think they might surprise the market with the 1.2 TSI in this compact sedan. Which will hopefully lead to more manufacturers pushing Turbos in 1.2 petrol engines.

Why the hell are they continuing with the 1.2 three pot? I see a lot of vxi Dzires and Ivtec Amazes. Having such an underpowered petrol would be a mistake and would bite them right from the start. Kseries, ivtec , revetron and even the kappa are quite a lot more faster and refined than that three pot.

Brilliant S2!!!, really looks suave in comparison to the currently available sub-4m sedans

Personally, this rendering somewhat reminds me of one of the car that actually brought the sub-4m sedan concept to India:

In my view, this is quite a big risk VW are taking. With the increasing interest in compact/pseudo SUV's with several new launches coming, the interest in the compact sedan space is likely to reduce. In addition it is a fiercely competitive segment and most of the cars have some good USP's. So just putting in a car in this segment is not going to help.

Here is my wishlist to VW which I think will help stand out from the others to some extent and ensure some success (and by success I mean 3-4000 units per month)
  • Please do not compromised on the build/interior quality. The car should look and feel solid at least as the Polo/Vento. Every other car in the segment feels light and tinny.
  • The 1.2 NA engine in the current Polo is a big no no. Everybody has a 1.2 NA and most of the competitors will drive equal or better than the VW. We definitely need the 1.2 TSI as the default petrol engine.
  • There is no info on the Automatics. Please do not skip this. VW pioneered high performing AT's in the mass market, this needs to continue. The 1.2 TSI+DSG should be there. In addition adding the 1.5 TDI +DSG will give a good USP. Currently there is only the Zest AMT.
  • The Polo itself is almost 4M and the lack of rear space is the biggest negative. So need to ensure interior space packaging meets the segment standards
  • Don't expect 6 airbags, but 2 Airbags + ABS should be standard across the range.
  • Price sensibly, if the above points are considered some premium over the equivalent competition is justified. But do not run away with the price.
  • Last but not the least, as everyone says, focus on after sales.

Is it just me, or does someone else too wonder that VW shouldn't be venturing into this sub 4-metre space? 😒
I own a 2012 Swift Dzire, and have realized that I won't be buying or recommending another sub 4-metre sedan/notchback to anyone! It's just improper utilisation of space.
A small hatchback or sub 4-metre pseudo SUV like the Ecosport makes sense, a "sedan" doesn't!

And VW is pretty late in joining the bandwagon, IMHO it shouldn't put it's feet into this!

This rendering does look good. However, this can never become reality!
Factoring in the fact that the Polo is already extremely close to the 4m barricade, VW would have to cut the front over hang to provide a usable boot ( forget proportional looks )

Even in that case, the Polo CS would be at a disadvantage as this is an afterthought, unlike the Figo sisters or the Swift sisters, and the Polo is already being criticized for its lack of rear legroom!

A quick MS paint job -

VW's Polo-based compact sedan, Ameo unveiled!-polo.png

Its clear that the fastback approach ( like the first Gen Octavia ) will severely compromise the rear headroom, while leg room is already being complained about.

With only 30 mm left at the rear, modifying only this to design the CS, will give it a extremely stubby look, like what the Dzire is suffering from - also won't add much in terms of usable luggage space.

The last option of modifying both the front end ( to reduce overhang ) and the rear end gives a balanced look, while it also provides better scope to improve the rear leg room, and the boot space. However, in terms of cost and complexity, this is the hardest way.

But despite the complexity of having to design a new smaller front end, and having to shoe-horn the 1.5 TDi inside the engine bay, this gives the CS a chance to compete with the already well established Dzire & Amaze and and already class leading Figo Aspire

VW had made it clear that the sub 4m compact will be premium considering the existing market. They will not compromise in safety ( read air bags and structural).
Now we have to see the value proposition that VW will have on this for creating a new segment in the sub 4m space?

Will it be a notch-back, though it has been denied in some reports?

The Tata Indigo CS actually started that trend. The Viva was a powerful variant of the Accent with the boot changed to a notch (hatch). It was definitely greater than 4m in length.

The Xcent and Amaze have decent sized, usable boots, and the Zest is not far behind. The Zest is also quite spacious and seats 5 in comfort, followed in comfort by the Amaze and then the Xcent. Sub 4m "sedans" do make sense, because they are small enough for the city, yet practical enough for the occasional trip with luggage for a smallish family, and most importantly they are relatively affordable. Good luck to VW, but I think their ASC will have more of a say in sales than the actual product. None of the VW group products are actually bad, and would otherwise have been worth the premium they charge.

Agreed, and good job with the renders! VW will have to extend the Polo as much as possible, and also allow for greater rear leg-room. The Polo already has a pretty spacious boot, so even a few inches of extension will add a decent amount. That said, do we know that it is based on the Polo?

Cheers on the safety. Time they made these standard on their entire range of cars too.

Hope it is as a nice differentiator and also for practical reasons. The sub-4m sedans generally have a poor loading bay due to the micro-boot lid.

I personally hate the sub 4m sedan class as it really is addressing only one requirement - the perception that a sedan is more upmarket than a hatch/notch and am hoping that VW will actually create a notchback and not a Polo with a stuck on appendage for a boot.

Bigger worry is this - If VW is planning to use the existing Polo platform for the upcoming compact sedan, does this mean India will be saddled with a soon to go out of production model for another 5-7 years? If this does happen, when the new polo / vento are released, who in their right minds will buy a previous generation car?

The president and managing director, Volkswagen India, confirms the Compact sedan to come in petrol and diesel variants meeting India emission norms!

Quote:
The new compact sedan will come with both petrol as well as diesel options. The evaluations around the diesel engines are still going on and how that would affect the market in a longer term cannot be estimated at the moment. India is a strong diesel market and the Indian customer expects that each brand in the market offers a diesel version in its product portfolio. Volkswagen will fulfil the existing emission norms (BS-IV/BS-III) in India at the time of the product's market introduction.

Valid point there! Also, from an Indian buyers perspective, there are many more fresh VFM compact sedans that outweigh a VW offering here. I doubt it's success.

Volkswagen Ameo- is the likely name for compact sedan.

Quote:
Initially, it was rumoured to be called as Bora, but there is still no assurance on what the exact name will be.
Quote:
This new compact sedan has been designed to cater to the Indian car market and it will even get daytime running LEDs and several other differentiating factors from the Polo and the Vento.
