Default Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

Mod Note: Our XC90 Report has been taken live at this link (Driven: Volvo XC90). Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Volvo has officially launched the 2015 XC90 SUV in India at a price of Rs. 64.90 lakh for the Momentum variant and Rs. 77.90 lakh for the Inscription variant (both prices ex-showroom, Mumbai without octroi).

High Points:
  • Deliveries will begin in September 2015.
  • Both variants are offered with the same 'D5' 2.0L, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 222 BHP and 470 Nm of torque. Top speed is limited to 230 km/h.
  • An 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive comes as standard.
  • Air suspension for all four wheels comes as standard.
  • The XC90 is equipped with run-off road protection. In the event of the vehicle running off the road, the front seat belts are tightened, and a mechanism between the seat and seat frame cushions any vertical force to prevent spine damage.
  • There are four colour options on offer: onyx black, magic blue, luminous sand metallic and crystal white pearl.
  • The XC90 will be sold in India as a direct import.
  • Volvo states that they have received around 30,000 orders for the XC90 globally.
  • Production this year has been capped at 55,000 units. This will be increased to 90,000 units per annum, next year.
  • Tomas Ernberg, MD Volvo Auto India, says that in three years, the new XC90 will be the oldest model in Volvo showrooms. Simply put, new Volvos are on their way.

The Volvo XC90
Design finally moves from irksome to handsome:

Volvo India has launched the 2nd-generation XC90 SUV at prices starting from Rs. 64.9 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

The all-new XC90 will be available in the following diesel-only trims:

D5 Momentum = 64.9 lakhs,
D5 Inscription = 77.9 lakhs.

(both prices ex-showroom, Mumbai)

A petrol version of the XC90 could be added to the lineup in the future.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said," The wait is finally over now. With all-new Volvo XC90, we are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. An example of Volvo-by-Volvo, the new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter for Volvo Cars, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilizing its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Volvo has invested in USD 11Bn to develop the product and engine platforms over the past 3 years, The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years."

The XC90 sports the face of Volvo's new design direction, with an impressive grille that houses the iron mark, and the striking all-LED headlights.

Inside the XC90 gets a fresh and roomy cabin. Volvo has done away with all the buttons and now the central console has only 8 of them. The main focus is on the iPad-like touchscreen control panel that makes up most of the central console. The home screen is horizontally divided into four zones: Navigation, Music, Phone and Sound Experience. Each of these tabs can be expanded by simply touching it.

Under the hood the XC90 comes powered by the 2.0-litre, 4 Cylinder, automatic 8-Speed AWD with 225bhp and a whopping 470Nm torque.

Seems like a good price, considering it is a CBU. Hopefully they start local assembly and the prices drop substantially once the initial hoopla is over.

The white leather in the car is going to be hard to maintain.
Hope they have kept all the radar features in the car, and just disabled them as opposed to removing them. Then when the govt wakes up and legalizes it, it'll just be a firmware update to enable them.

Price seems good considering it's a CBU but will have to wait for the full feature list to confirm if it's really a good price.

The grille spoils the front look of the car totally. The Chinese stamp is in your face with this car. I would have preferred the clean, timeless Scandanavian look instead.

The car has all the radar-based safety functions built into it, but it will remain disabled till the Indian government gives them a go-ahead. This has been clarified by Tomas Ernberg, managing director, Volvo Auto India.

From ACI:

Quote:
The gear-lever knob is made of crystal glass and there are diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control. Besides, a tablet-like touchscreen control console, a virtually button-free dash and an interior made using soft leather and wood go about cocooning the occupants in luxury.

The Momentum trim gets driver’s seat adjust with memory function, panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch screen in the instrument cluster, park assist and hill descent control.

Furthermore, the Inscription gets a 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system, air suspension, heads-up display, ventilated front seats and Nappa leather upholstery.

The XC90 gets two-step airbags, automatic height adjusted front seat belts and an Intelligent Driver information system, among others, as standard on both the XC90 trims.

Wow! Nice pricing by Volvo! I'd expected it to be in the region of 75-80 lacs ex showroom but this is a good surprise! For once a pricing of a car is under the expected price range as probably no one expected it to be below 70 lacs.

I think there should be a significant waiting for this one initially given that it will be a CBU, has competitive pricing, an excellent feature list and looks like nothing else in the market currently.

Now if only Volvo improves their dealership network and commences local assembly they should be laughing their way to the bank with this one.

If I am not mistaken some years back the XC90 was retailing at ~42.xx lacs ex showroom. Even though this one is pricier by ~23 lacs it still seems worth the price. Love the way it looks and then there's that centre console which is simply outstanding!

Maybe it's just me but I'm not thrilled by the styling. Its looking too boxy and ungainly. While the pricing itself is good, I dont see Volvo doing an average of more than 10-15 cars per month.

Everything is great, however am i alone in thinking that a 2 liter 4 cylinder at 77 lakhs++ is a deal killer ?

225hp & 470Nm is hardly "whopping" considering its a full sized GLE/ML/X5 competitor.

Air suspension is standard on both variants, unlike what is written above. Also about 12 lacs more for the higher end, which has nappa leather with ventilated seats, a better music system, bigger alloys, and a heads up display is a bit much I would think.

The 2 litre engine seems small, but all Volvos are going to be 4 cylinders from now onwards. I'd wait to see the driving reports before writing it off though.

Few years back, even the Porsche Cayenne range started in mid 60's, now it has crossed the Crore Rupees mark.

In this Segment, the only decently priced SUV's are BMW X5 and Mercedes GL Class(not counting Q7 as its due for replacement in few months).

Volvo seems to be playing extremely safe here, with deliveries in September based on bookings collected now. I can bet, not many will be willing to wait so much for a brand like Volvo at this price point that comes with a 2 Litre 4 Cylinder Diesel. Even at much higher price point, the new Audi Q7 might turn out to be a hit.

I've been waiting at the edge of my seat for months now for the XC90. And man am I upset looking at the price !
I was so sure Volvo would kill it this year with this car assuming they kept the price feasible. But 66 ++ for the base model (it better be with air suspension) is pointless.
Who in their right mind would buy a Volvo 4 cylinder over a merc/Audi/Bmw 6 cylinder at virtually the same price. Bare in mind there's 2 things wrong with the above sentence. It's a VOLVO. And it's a 4 cylinder. It will never find the resale value of the Germans. It will never find the resale value of 6 cylinders.

I'm not writing off this engine by any stretch. I've read raving reviews all over the Internet. But to say that it's as refined and linear as a 6 cylinder motor would be unfair. At the end of the day it remains a 4 cylinder and there's only so much clutter u can avoid from it.

I was really hoping that Volvo would bring some value for their buck by learning from past mistakes instead of blindly pricing their product parallel to the Germans and then finally being forced to sell their cars with 5L plus discounts all the time. But I was wrong obviously.

This car is going to be my next buy coz I'm just completely blown away by the interior. But today I'm heartbroken. Hopefully they'll reduce prices significantly by starting local assembly. Keeping fingers crossed

I for one actually thought that it would have been around the 80 mark (showroom) and was positively surprised at the price to be honest.

The new XC90 is handsome and safe. However, small, 2.0-litre engine could be a major turn-off for potential buyers considering the price of the vehicle.

It also remains to be seen how Volvo markets the car. Till date, their attempts to sell passenger cars have been mediocre at best. Service is another problem.

I'm with Bluebeem. As much as I love the XC90's styling, the price & engine strategy is way off!

Remember that the XC90 is a CBU, hence it automatically attracts higher road taxes (for individual customers). That 64.90 ex-showroom tag results in an onroad price of 80 lakhs!

A 4 cylinder engine / 225 BHP is nothing to write home about in this price range, especially when the vehicle itself weighs nearly 2,200 kilos! That's an unimpressive power to weight ratio of ~100 BHP / tonne.

The small dealer network & awful resale doesn't help it either. Good luck Volvo. You've just shown why you don't get the Indian market, despite having a seemingly good product (haven't driven it yet). Or maybe Volvo thinks, they aren't going to get volumes anyway. Might as well charge the most they can from those who love this SUV.

For the same money, I'll stick with the creamy 6-cylinders of the M-Class, X5 & Q7.

I think you're talking about the XC60.

I would honestly be surprised if they consistently do 15 units a month (after the initial pent-up demand is served).
