Default Honda recalls more cars (Accord, CR-V, Civic) over faulty airbags

Honda has once again recalled some of its cars to carry out replacement of faulty airbags.

Passenger side airbag inflators of 575 units of the CR-V SUV manufactured in 2004 and driver side airbag inflators of 10,805 units of the Accord sedan manufactured from 2003 - 2007 will be replaced. Additionally, the passenger side airbag Inflator of 1 unit of the Civic sedan manufactured in 2004 will also be replaced.

The replacement would be carried out free of cost at Honda dealerships across India from 4th June 2015 in a phased manner and the company will communicate with customers directly.

Additionally, owners can log on to Honda's website and ascertain if their vehicles are in the list of recalled vehicles. Owners need to enter their car's 17-character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the special microsite that has been created.

The replacement is being carried out as a part of a global exercise by Honda. No incidents related to this part have been reported in India.

I think it's great of Honda to recall cars made almost 15 years ago! Although I have to wonder what took them so long to find the fault and how they discovered it after all this time.

It's kind of reassuring to see manufacturers give importance to safety. The whole Chevrolet fire incident was very unsettling to me.

Better late than never. But many of those 10+ years old cars will now be in the hands of 2nd or 3rd owners. So the recall would do nothing for the folks who bought the vehicle in the first place. If the airbags were faulty, why it couldnt have been identified years ago, those people were driving around with a false sense of security for so many years. Some of them could have been killed.
Also, I dont know how they are finding out the faults, but finding defective airbags in "one civic" that was made 11 yrs ago is surprising. I wonder how safe the other civics of the same vintage are.
Any news about the lacs of the city sedans they have sold in india in the last 15 years?

It a great effort but the main problem lies with the airbag OEM manufacturer.

R&D is continuous process that yields real results after n number of trials/experiments. The OEM manufacturer or may be Honda would have found the issue via customer complaints or testing regarding airbag failures would have got the price started onto Takata to look back onto the manufacturing process used for the defective batch of airbags manufactured and supplied to car manufacturers.

Once Takata could narrow down on the batches of the defective airbags, a issue note/alert is sent to all manufactures whom these airbags were supplied to recall cars that had these defective airbags fit into them.

A product recall procedure takes months of research, back - tracking, traceability to get to the real cause of the problem and to get all the defective cars call do that no mishap is occurred.

It is better to recall a 15 year old car for this problem rather than sitting over and ignoring.

PS: It is great to see cars being recalled even after their warranty period. Hats off to the law and respect for people lives. Here in India, warranty related jobs itself are delayed and ways are found by ASC to get rid of the customer.

The Civic was launched in India only in 2006. Given that, how could the above statement be true ? Also, can it be just 1 unit that is faulty ? In general, these recalls apply to a set of vehicles in a batch or batches with specific VIN numbers.

It seems that all Japanese manufacturers are suffering due to one OEM supplier. This is a cross we all have to bear. With consumer laws becoming tougher, they do not seem to have many options but to recall and fix.

Ever since the issue with the air bag manufacturer, Takata has been identified, Nhtsa has been conducting series of investigations with the help of companies like Honda Toyota BMW st al.
These recalls are part of the interim findings.
Two days earlier, Reuters has carried out the report on this new set of global recalls. It's a positive surprise on how fast Honda India responded to this.

I know the Civic wasn't launched in India in 2004. However, Honda's press release states,
Quote:
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) is carrying out preventive replacement of Passenger Side Airbag inflator of 575 units of CR-V, 1 unit of Civic manufactured in Year 2004 and Driver Side Air Bag Inflator of 10805 units of Honda Accord manufactured from Year 2003 - 2007 as part of Honda's global recall / safety improvement campaign concerning Air Bag inflators.
Is it possible that the car in question is an import?

On Some 2008-2011 Accord vehicles the piston rings may be sticking, resulting in high engine oil consumption. America Honda is extending the warranty of the engine pistons and piston rings to 8 years from the original date of purchase or 125000 miles whichever comes first.

Not sure if they will honor this in india but thought of sharing this for honda accord owners. I am one .
