Was always going to happen, the question was only when and we have got an answer to that now. Chart below (created out of Team BHP monthly numbers) reflects the downside in sales pretty much month on month

The most it ever sold was 262 units in a month shortly after its launch , averaging out over its life span to only 66 units a month. Calling it a failure would be polite.

Interest in the car also over time mirrors sales charts. Peak at launch and then down hill

Result of a lack of common sense. Nissan's Indian team and Ashok Leyland should have given a second's thought when selecting this aesthetic disaster for India launch. Moreover, Nissan is no Maruti to try such a gamble in India. Even for Maruti, cars like Estilo flopped miserably.

I don't understand how Tata is managing the Venture. It also has very low numbers and more or less all of the Evalia mis-perceptions. I think it has not yet been discontinued though such a news won't be a shocker.

Venture s a derivative of ace. And the production line is constantly used and low volumes of the venture can be supported. Anyway a commercial vehicle line is designed to produce large no of variants.

The Evalia began its innings with a huge disadvantage because of its box-like styling for the rear-half of the vehicle. Lack of comfort features for second row passengers (dedicated A/C vents, captain seats & roll-down or sliding windows) in the initial version did not help, either.

After it turned out to be a sales dud, the only way of lifting it up was to do a Versa-to-Eeco like transformation.

They did attempt such a transformation, actually. The Stile from Ashok Leyland was the result, and it had more potential than its more expensive twin, but they failed to capitalise on its entire range of commercial abilities.

Nissan & Ashok Leyland must have decided not to flog these dying horses anymore.

It remains to be seen if Nissan can learn from this fiasco, and not repeat the same mistakes with future products. As for Ashok Leyland, it looks like they're calling it quits in the passenger vehicle segment.

Taxi drivers have no interest / time / inclination in 'creating demand' for a vehicle. They buy whatever customers ask for. The reason that cabbies pay such a huge premium for the Innova is because every call they get asks for 'Innova'.

A taxi driver who'd buy an Evalia would have to offer serious rental discounts to make it run. And even then, he'd have to contend with Nissan's shoddy dealerships and poor part supplies. Some regular parts for my Sunny take 2 weeks to arrive in a major city like Mumbai. Imagine the horrific state of affairs for a taxi driver in Goa or West Bengal.

With such shoddy backing, the Evalia deserved to fail.

It was actually touted as the taxi of tomorrow for New York! Of course, the NV200 failed there too.
