Default Nissan recalls 12,000 cars in India over faulty engine switch and airbags

The Indian arm of the Japanese automotive major, Nissan, has issued a recall for around 12,000 units of various models manufactured between June 2013 and March 2015 to rectify problems related to their engine switches and airbags. This recall mainly includes the Sunny sedan and the Micra hatchback.

This is a part of the global recall campaign on certain models that Nissan has announced for 2,70,000 cars sold worldwide.

Quote:
When asked about impact on India, a company spokesperson said, "Nissan is conducting a voluntary recall campaign for about 2,70,000 vehicles on the certain models, including 12,000 vehicles in India."

Authorised Nissan retailers will rework the engine switch at no cost to the customer to avoid excessive interference, the spokesperson said.

The units impacted by faulty airbags constituted a very small fraction of about 12,000 units being recalled, the spokesperson added.

Default Nissan recalls 12,000 cars in India over faulty engine switch and airbags

Nissan has recalled around 12,000 cars in India to fix an issue with their engine switches and airbags. This is a part of a global recall issued by the company involving 2,70,000 cars.

The cars with faulty airbags constitute a small number of the total number of cars recalled. The airbags have been manufactured by Takata. Various manufacturers have recalled vehicles globally over problems with airbags made by Takata.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers introduced voluntary vehicles recalls for safety related issues in India in July 2012. Since then, more than seven lakh vehicles have been recalled by various manufacturers in India.

A similar recall was done in Jan 2015 for the badge engineered twins of the Sunny & Micra i.e the Scala and Pulse by Renault. Does this mean that Nissan woke 6 months after Renault?

Nope. Nissan had issued the airbag recall before Renault - link. This new one includes the switch.

On the topic of Nissan & airbags, I came across this bit of news on Motor Octane. I'm not sure of its accuracy, but they sound confident:

Quote:
Nissan will be launching the Micra with dual airbags as standard across all variants today evening. The Micra will also be offered with x-Shift, which is their CVT (continuously variable transmission) even on the base model (XL).

If the news turns out to be true, then Nissan Micra would become the third hatchback (after Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Liva) to offer 2 airbags as standard!

The website of Nissan doesn't reflect the rumoured change (as of now). Also, I'm not sure if this very welcome change is applicable on the Micra Active.

Offering the X-Tronic CVT on lower variants is also a welcome move!

Apparently, my wife's Nissan Micra was also part of the recall units. Received this yesterday:
