The car really has a LONG wheelbase, and short overhangs.

The very coupe-like roofline with a severely raked rear windshield makes it look pretty distinctive for a hatch in India. The i20 elite tries this last styling trick, and fails to make the car cohere overall: ending with a imo pretty vulgar pastiche of too many borrowed/plagiarised styling elements (front: Maserati Ghibli, profile: RR Evoque, tail-lamps: Alfa Giulietta...).

This car too emulates, to my eye at least a few other cars (new Nissans' front, Merc A-class tail-lamp...) but it coheres really well and distinctively mefeels. Love the absence of slashes/creases on the door panels, though they've cheated a bit by having a too-high window line for visual, sexy-coupe-effect?

If it rides OK and handles anywhere near as well as the Swift (not that either of these essential parameters are particularly important to most buyers sadly): Hyundai and their i20 'Elite' (ahem) will become a 'Pleb' as soon as it is launched?!

Maruti Suzuki to export upcoming hatchback to Japan.

Quote:
Maruti plans to produce close to 80,000 units of the YRA model in the first year of its launch. Of this, 60% will be exported. Close to 5,000 units are likely to be shipped to Japan, said one of the two people cited earlier. The idea is to first gauge the acceptability of a made-in-India model in a mature market like Japan, and subsequently export more
Quote:
Indeed, “acceptability of the models by the Japanese customers will be the key.Given this, the model will likely be loaded with high-end features, some unheard of in the compact car segment in the Indian market.
Quote:
Through its Indian subsidiary, Suzuki Motor plans to control 50% of the local passenger car market by 2020.

Maruti Suzuki YRA to come in 4 engine variants - 3 Petrol engines & 1 diesel
Petrol:
Quote:
YRA will get an all-new K12B 1242cc petrol motor mated to a 5-speed transmission and a CVT gearbox, a K10C Boosterjet motor and a 1.4 K-Series petrol motor.
Quote:
It will further get Idling Start/Stop technology for improved fuel efficiency
Quote:
The diesel motor that will come with it, there will be the tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS diesel motor which will churn out 90 bhp-200 Nm
With various engines on offer there would be quite a few variants on offer. Could follow the S Cross variant nomenclature.

Wow! It's like TATA importing a particular model of it's truck from some offshore manufacturing unit, say in South Africa. Question is, will Japanese accept a 'Made in India' car?

Don't Americans buy iPhones that are manufactured in China?
It really doesn't matter at all where a product is made. What matters is, for whom do you make it. The same Swift for India would only feature a 1.2L petrol engine, while for Japan, it might have more options. The quality etc would be better. It would be a true Suzuki Swift and making it in India won't make any difference to anybody.

Guess you got it wrong. I reckon he meant the prototype is off to Japan for testing and validation. That's the procedure for all of MSIL's new launches.

The next Premium Hatch from Suzuki - YRA now testing in Europe!

YRA /iK 2 now been in UK.

Quote:
As indicated by the number plates, the test mule should be registered to the automaker’s European subsidiary located in Bensheim town in the Bergstrasse district, Germany.
Quote:
The proportions will be similar to the concept. The design and styling will be very European with a short height, wider body and a steeply-angled rear-end. Under the hood, there will be a 1.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, which Suzuki calls the ‘Boosterjet’ engine. A mild hybrid system called SVHS will also be available. Additionally, the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines from the Swift may also be offered in Europe, and like in the Swift, a 4WD system could be optional.

Something tells me the YRA could replace the Swift in markets abroad pretty soon. The current Swift came out in 2010 and a replacement is almost due, and I don't think we have spy shots of the next generation Swift yet. Besides, the YRA and the Swift got too much in common and I doubt whether Suzuki can sell both side by side.

What they need is a more practical MPVish hatch under the YRA, the next generation Splash if you know what I mean.

What is this? A joke of some sorts? Wheres the differentiator, between this and a mashup of Swift, Ritz & SX4 S-Cross? This is like, you can wear anything as long as its a "Red TShirt". Can someone say to MS, enough with the hatches...we dont want every hue and shade there is of a hatchback vehicle?

As a current owner of MS's (ex) most expensive offering, I feel frustrated not having anything to look upto...instead of a premium MUV or Sedan story, I keep seeing these highly monotonous variations of what is esentially a Hatch.

Thanks for the thread though, just highly deflated seeing this company suck the juice out of vehicle-diversity.

I must say, you summed it up really well. Come to think of it, MS offerings are like a complex venn diagram with a very large common area.

That's Suzuki's claim to fame. They rule hatchback segment and now they are consolidating it. Though I think their past premium offerings like Vitara(your car, I guess) and Kizashi were very good products. They would have performed better if diesel engine was also offered in Indian market.
Also, why will they bother investing time and energy somewhere else of they can mint money without any risk? Time and energy will be required when the current hatch lineup losses sheen and profit starts getting effected.

The hatchback is MSIL's cash cow. They will milk it for what it's worth (excuse the pun)
and you can't blame them especially after the colossal market-duds that the Grand Vitara and Kizashi (or even the SX4) were. Hatchbacks are the reason why MSIL enjoys the largest portion of the proverbial pie.

The YRA will be at the top of the hatchback food chain while the Alto 800 caters to those looking at the entry level hatch segment. And then they have the Celerios and Wagon-Rs for everything else in between.

It's like what Sourabh said earlier: this indicates that MSIL is merely consolidating their position in the market with this grown up hatchback. It may not have many takers, but there's something for everyone. You know what they say.. "Different folks, different strokes!"

No company can survive by continuing with old models. They have to constantly refresh the products and introduce new models. That's what exactly Maruti is doing. And they are entering into new segments as well. The Ertiga, SCross, YRA and YBA are examples. And the news about a bigger MUV than Ertiga.

Hatch backs are the bread and butter for Maruti. If they completely concentrate on higher segments and avoid the hatch segment, the rivaling companies will grab the segment with newer products. Maruti will not leave the hatch segment without a fight. It is as simple as that.

I suggest the name: 'S-Team' for this car. Starts with an 'S', resembles the legendary name 'Esteem', and follows the naming convention of 'S-Cross'.

Maruti, please don't spoil the party by giving names like Fronx.
