Default Spotted! VW Polo GTI with 1.8L TSI engine

Quote:
This 1.8 TSI engine is seen aboard Skoda Octavia in lower state of power & torque output, and in Skoda Superb too in an even lower tune. There is good chance the upcoming VW Polo GTI in India could share the same (lower) state of tune as one of these sedans, instead of the 189 bhp setting in international markets. Mated to this engine inside VW Polo GTI, is the acclaimed 7-speed DSG unit, that helps this hot hatch achieve 0-100 kmph acceleration in just 6.7 seconds.

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor .

With just one hatchback since 2010, VW sure knows how to stay in the news, especially among enthusiasts. With a 1.8 TSI, you're looking at a power to weight ratio of ~150 BHP / tonne! 0 - 100 in 6.7 seconds!!

I don't see why VW has to bring it in as a CBU. They have the car here, and the engine, might as well assemble / mate it here. VW knows that a CBU will be dead on arrival.

Though there is little likelihood of the car coming with a 6-speed MT, what I wouldn't give!

Here's one of the many drive reports online.

CBU... you think they might actually launch the three door model or maybe even the typeR.

WOW! Indeed a brilliant scoop
Hope this monster hatch makes its way on our roads pretty soon. Success of GTi might instil the minds of Hyundai to launch the Veloster in India as well. Sure the car scene in India is changing for good with more and more weight being added on the performance side.
I hope this Polo is given a better cosmetic treatment rather than just a badge change.

Whatever we say about VW and their attitude and sales and service, must appreciate their interest of giving the customers unique options. The GT twins were a much bigger success than they imagined and I guess that has played a role in them trying out the next new thing.

As GTO mentioned, since the car, the engine and the DSG gearbox are all available here, hope they do not have to bring it as a CBU and can do the needed work here itself and hence can price it reasonably well.

What would be a good price if and when they decide to launch? Would something like 13-14L Ex-Showroom be too much to hope for?

This may well be a test mule actually. 1.8 TSI on a Polo!! I wish they bring this combo with Golf. This engine will surely cost above 13-14L. I think it's hard to find a buyer in India who will buy Polo for 14L which is also available at 6L albeit smaller engine. In India buying a car still carries some image and a value conscious buyer will find it hard to accept. Afterall, there are not many enthusiasts out there on our roads. Majority of Polos sold here currently are not GT versions either. But I'd appreciate VW if they have the courage to bring this on our roads.

Edit: Do I see a sunroof in the first picture?

A couple of years ago the general perception about the Polo GT TSI would have also been the same - Who'd buy a hatch for almost 10 lakhs, when the same car with a smaller engine and less accomplished transmission is available for half that price? We know how that went.

If they mate the Indian Polo to the 1.8 TSI and price it between 12-14 lakhs I see a lot of folks selling their GT TSIs and upgrading to this.

If you see UK prices, the 1.8 GTI DSG is just about 20% costlier than a 1.0 or 1.2TSI DSG. So if they are able to assemble the car here , even after considering extra 5% excise duty for engine size above 1.2 L, it should come at around 10.50 to 11L ex showroom. So13L ex showroom should be easily achievable by that logic.

That 1.8 TSI is magical. If VW launches a 1.8 Polo GTI for around 13 to 14L , I will happily swap my 6 month old GT TSI for the GTI.

VW encouraged by the launch of BMW 1 and Mercedes Benz A class along with already selling launched Mini.

VW POLO GTI will surely give them a run for their money

Now guys, please don't start complaints about lack of this and lack of that in the Polo GIT or come with your wish lists!

If VW can give us the car and the engine, I think there is nothing to complaint about.

If someone wants feature loaded car, buy a Hyundai!

I was really happy when i read this piece of news. Volkswagen surely knows how to keep the enthusiasts happy! However, i am pretty sure that they would be greedy and price the car closer to Rs. 15-16 lakhs (ex-showroom) considering would get visual upgrades too over the normal Polo's.

I've heard this will be a limited run of 500 vehicles or something of that sort to start off with. As for the price, my guess is it will be CBU and the prices will be over 20l ex showroom. Lets not expect a low price and then get disappointed when its much higher than that.

I only wish I had another parking space

Hey VW, just a thought! Just swap the engine on the Polo GT by plonking in the 1.8 TSI. No more! Okay, may be throw in a sun-roof. But, no more pricy features and you have a customer in me. And, please launch it soon.

Well, this, in my opinion, could be the perfect car for someone who wants to enjoy the performance without getting too much attention on roads.
Certain people that I know, avoid Audi/ BMW and sticks to passat/superb, just to remain under the radar.
I, for one, will surely consider GTI seriously if launched under 15 ex showroom.
Cheers!

First things first! How many times in this forum have we came across an absolutely drool worthy machine being tested in India, that ensues endless discussions and speculations only to be finally disappointed by the preposterous pricing adopted by the manufacturer?

Seriously hope that's not the case here But kudos to VW for at least trying to rejuvenate the performance starved Indian enthusiast

As GTO-san rightly pointed out, VW has the right mix of components at hand to make this a reality, and an affordable one at that. Besides, they can't go too overboard with the pricing because that would be dangerously close to the Octy 1.8 TSI, which inspite of being in a lower state of tune, will be the better bet!
