Tata Motors and Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS, Pilani) have entered into a partnership to launch a new engineering programme. The two organisations have signed a five year MOU for the initiative, which aims to bridge the gap of the automotive industry requirements and academics.

The programme is aimed at strengthening the industry-readiness of the talent stepping out of campuses. The first set of programmes to roll-out of this association will be a customised Masters as well Bachelor's Degree in Technology for Automotive Engineering, which will run across various locations in India.

The course is designed into two parts:Students will be mentored and guided by industry leaders and will also engage with Tata Motors for practice sessions wherein they would work with the company for six months on business projects.

They will have to go through periodic assessments and on successful completion of the programme, a certificate will be awarded jointly by BITS, Pilani and Tata Motors Ltd.

This partnership will involve Tata Motors' employees to further develop their skills by building their functional expertise.

This is one great leap for automotive engineering. Hope this motivates other players like Mahindra and Suzuki to tie up with premier institutes.

Very good initiative by Tata Motors. If all the companies start to work with the various Universities of India than the gap between the industry and the colleges will reduce. This will benefit both the students as well as the companies since the students will get the experience to work on the industry standards and their will be no need to give extra training to the freshers from the companies. Request such companies to please improve the quality of education in Automobile department of Mumbai University especially in M. H. Saboo Siddik college of Engineering.

This is indeed a great initiative by Tata Motors and BITS. This would really be helpful for the automobile engineering students as well as for the industry.

I would assume other automobile manufacturers might already have an understanding with other universities and colleges in some form or the other for taking students for internship, but this one is different as students would undergo practical class room as well as on the job training :thumbs up.

Customized and specialized courses are whats required now. Regular B.Tech courses are too vague. Even Mechanical or Electronics, or for that matter, the relatively new Mecha-tronics. Syllabus is quite vast and students study bits and pieces of everything, but enough to be really good in any particular field. 'Jack of all trades' argument. Teach students what they will need when they step out of the college, not irrelevant nonsense. case in point, the textbook that was assigned to us for my M.Tech class a couple of years ago, that too in an IIT, mentions that 2.5G is a new technology, yet to be rolled out! :Frustrati
