Default November 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Management Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

It is finally Happening !!! The C1 segment is finally taking a hit as predicted by many. Nice to see the C2 segment on a upswing. The indian consumers are now preferring a Premium Hatch or a Sedan/SUV to a Compact Sedan.

A few additional observations :
a) Baleno cannibalizing Swift and hitting I20/Jazz hard !!! Basically it has damaged the prospects of the compact sedan segment and taken a sizeable marketshare in the premium hatch segment.
b) Grand I10 doing well due to good discounts apart from the fact that it is a great choice for first timers.
c) Figo twins not doing well primarily to the fact that petrol engines are now being preferred.
d) The rise of the C2 (Sedan/SUV) segments due to the rising aspirations of the indian consumers. Within this segment Ecosport doing well while Scross/TUV300/Duster showing declining numbers.
e) A much wider network is also one of the keys to the popularity of Dzire. This is indicated by the rising sales despite the contraction of the C1 segment.

Great report Aditya !

Few quick observations:

1. At 9000 units a Month, the Baleno is a hit. I see a dozen Baleno's everyday in Pune, so many Baleno's in the roads means it is clearly a preferred choice for individuals from the Suzuki stable. The S-Cross though has taken a beating, even after the handsome discounts.

2. The overall number of Honda's have gone down, every model has sold less than that in October. Any particular reason? Plant shutdown?

3. Tata Zest at just 1600 units a month? No matter how good the car is, the sales figures have plummeted significantly and an average of 2000 units is too less for this product of this calibre. Hopefully the future Tata's will do better given their fresh outlook starting with the Zica.

4. Renault Duster has been hit hard after the launch of the Creta. It shows !

5. The sales of the Vento and Polo have gone down sharply, thanks to the emission scandal.

6. Aspire + Figo at 5000 units a month is again too low, better numbers were expected !

Finally the most awaited thread is here!

Some observations:
1. Why are nano & bolt in the top gainers section when they have actually lost volume?
2. Baleno is on a roll, and Swift seems to have taken a hit!
3. Creta down by over a 1000 units. Is the initial backlog over? Or is this due to the Chennai floods?
4. Innova too sees a sharp decline.
5. Zest falls to sub 2000 figures. Tata motors clearly has their hands full. Wishing them all the best. Hope Zica does well!
6. S-Cross continues it's slide. A very competent car, but let down by average looks & overshadowed by Creta.
7. VW's both bread and butter offerings - Polo & Vento see a sharp decline in numbers!
8. Things not looking bright for Figo & Aspire.

  • With the Kwid and Eon doing well and even the Nano improving numbers, Looks like the A segment is again on the way up. But Kwid numbers are still poor in the overall scheme of things, has potential to do much more. Interesting to see the Eon not impacted by the Kwid.

  • The premium hatch segment seems to be gaining acceptance. Big numbers from Baleno (from Limited outlets), i20 down but not by much. Swift heavily cannibalized buy the Baleno. Jazz seems to be settling around the 4K mark. Polo hit badly (need to see if it is purely due to the emission scandal). Disappointing numbers from Figo, considering it is a fresh car and a good package. Abarth seems to have done nothing for Fiat in terms of numbers (This was expected though)

  • Customers seem to have started looking away from the Compact Sedans to the premium hatches. Amaze and Xcent doing decent numbers-But nowhere close to the Premium Hatches. Poor numbers from Aspire. A little too late in the game? VW should rethink their Compact Sedan Plans.

  • C2 Sedans pretty standard. City has dropped and Ciaz is inching closer. Verna and Rapid distant 3rd and 4th. Vento badly hit. Lowest number in a long time.

  • Utility Segment doing very well. TUV300 continues its impressive run, Creta slightly down but maybe due to production constraints and Chennai Floods. XUV, Scorpio, Bolero all maintain numbers. Looks to be the segment of growth. Innova and Ertiga continue to do well. S Cross struggling by Maruti Standards, but looking at the spate of 2 digit and 3 digit sales numbers, I say pretty good performance

  • Corolla the lone ranger in the D segment. Everyone else far far behind. Quite a strange situation.

Only 8 Cars have increased numbers in Nov compared to Oct (excluding the cars doing single or double digits). To round off the top 10 in Top Gainers, I believe least of volume losers might have been considered.

@Aditya, the top gainers, month on month, has wrongly included Nano and Bolt.

Baleno is a hit but looks like at the expense of Swift. Can Maruti call it a success if the trend continues?

Tata Bolt seems to be settling at 900 odd from the previous ~500. Discounts working? With the Vista discontinued, Tata should offer it with a lower starting price. Also, I read somewhere that they are working on the Bolt's exterior to differentiate it from the Vista. May be the upcoming Auto Expo will give us a hint about Bolt's future.

  • Baleno is a super hit for Maruti. Swift is clearly getting impacted by it. This shows that Indian public does not mind shelling out more money to get a better product!
  • Vento and Polo numbers should be subdued going forward - they have got enough negative publicity and it will take time for them to come back in the race
  • Ciaz and City remain the best choices in the sedan segment! I think Ciaz performance should continue unless Hyundai does something to the Verna
  • Ford and Tata are clear examples of how hard it is to change reputation. Both of them launch good products at competitive prices yet market does not give them much sales! Capitalism is really brutal!
  • Really want Tata products to do good as I own their shares!

Every single manufacturer other than Renault has reported lower numbers compared to previous month. Even Renault has just reported just around 500 more, mainly due to Kwid. So cars that have taken a sales hit might as well be due to the general sluggishness in sales, and nothing to do with the product itself.

Somehow these numbers are not looking good but they are more realistic. All packs are down on MoM. After effect of a festive season buying frenzy coupled with the floods in Chennai?
The floods clearly hampering many. For example look at Creta numbers. With bookings crossing 70000 odd plus on 1st Dec and total number of deliveries till Oct standing at 30406, there is a backlog of 40000 vehicles and with a production capacity of 7000 units per month, only 5837 shipped. Most possibly due to floods. Agonizing increased waiting period for those who booked. I read somewhere that 15000 odd Creta are already booked for exports. Have they started shipping ?
The after effects of floods will continue to this month charts too. Lets see how these huge discounts of over a lakh of Rupees on some models helps manufacturers in Dec month. Tough task ahead !

Suddenly seeing a spurt in the bookings of Corolla Altis? With December discounts going upto Rs 50K will it mean that the sales will further go up? Has the Honda City sales started to decline after maintaining steady sales.

-As per report it looks as if the Elantra is going to be phased out very soon. Hyundai will have to drastically work around getting the sales up.

- This is an awesome report and if you see the trend over the past 3 months you could actually buy the right car just going by the numbers

- I am in the process of doing this on the basis of the numbers only
