Hope he has the same effect as Alan Mullaly had on Ford. Alan Mulally was hired from competitor Boeing.

Hiring from the aviation sector tells me that Tata Motors are focussing on quality and product development cycle improvements.

Mr. Guenter Butschek has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Tata Motors. He is expected to join the company by February 15, 2016.

The position of Managing Director of Tata Motors has been vacant since the death of Mr. Karl Slym in January 2014. Mr. Butschek, who now fills this position, will lead all operations of the company in India and in international markets such as South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and South Africa. However, Jaguar Land Rover will continue to be managed by its Chief Executive Officer and Director, Dr. Ralf Speth, who is also on the Board of Directors of Tata Motors.

Mr. Butschek, 55, graduated in Business Administration and Economics with a diploma from the University of Cooperative Education Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to joining Tata Motors, he has worked at the Airbus Group and Daimler AG.

Mr. Butschek's professional career began in 1984, when he joined Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, Germany. Over the years, he held several positions in logistics, human resources and procurement at the Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars division. He went on to become a member of the Management Board of DaimlerChrysler South Africa (DCSA) with full operational responsibility in 2000.

In 2002, he moved to the Netherlands as President and Chief Executive Officer of Netherlands Car B.V., a contract manufacturer within the global manufacturing network of DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi Motors.

The last role he held was President and Chief Executive Officer of Beijing Benz Automotive Co. Ltd, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Beijing Automotive Industrial Holding in Beijing, China.

After completing more than 25 years at Daimler AG, Mr. Butschek joined the Airbus Group in 2011 as Executive Vice President of Operations, member of the Airbus Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Board of Management of Airbus in Germany. In his last assignment at the Airbus Group, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Airbus and member of the Group Executive Committee.

More than anything, I just hope he sticks around and things work out for them. Tata has had too many exits at the top level, including Carl-Peter Forster & Karl Slym. What the company needs is stability.

Congratulations to Tata & Butschek. He's got an impressive background, having been the boss of Mercedes in China and the No.3 person at Airbus.

As far as the automobile field goes, the man has every qualification required to head Tata Motors.

What makes me wonder is why did he shift to Airbus in 2011 and then move back to the automobile business?

- At Benz, he was moving around a lot, and heading country operations
- At 51 he quits a 25 year old association and moves to Airbus, why? Maybe for money?
- Then at 55 he realises his mistake and is back to Automobiles

However, the decision is taken. For the sake of Tata Motors I wish the existing top management gives him a chance and works alongwith him as a Team to build the Company

For him, I hope is still has his love for automobiles, and is not looking at a fat retirement pay-check

Tata has always had this Mercedes Benz connection. Now its back again, will be very interesting to watch this space

Good news for Tata Motors. This is one Indian auto manufacturer I want to see do well in the future. My best wishes with both TML and Mr. Butschek!

I really doubt he would have quit a company like Mercedes Benz for more money. At senior management level, and with his level of experience, priorities are usually different. May be difference of opinion with top bosses or feeling of being side-lined in some important strategy decision - possible. Also possible that he just wanted to try something different in his career after 25 years in the same field, and later realized that aircraft business was just not his cup of tea.

Quite a lot of information flowing about the new CEO and am happy with the choices that TATA has made in the recent past. Kind of makes me feel good that they are choosing the right set of people.

As GTO mentioned, hope he stays around and navigates the company in the right direction. The job wouldn't be that tough considering Karl Slym already gave massive inputs and Cyrus Mistry did a clean up job too.

I believe this guy was in Merc when the "over-engineered" products were launched; hope he focus on such products in TATA too. That's where TATA needs a quantum leap which will naturally help change the consumer perspective. As we see, the new higher levels of quality / technology / design language doesn't seem to help much!

Another round of hiring should be for some rock solid Marketing guys I pray; someone who can do stuffs like "VW talking newspaper" or "Ford Ecosport pre-launch events" or something of that sort.

Tata continues with it's fascination for MB, and with good reason though.

A good move, as GTO mentioned hope he is there for at least 3-5 yrs.

That was my first thought as well. Ford re-inveted itself during Alans watch. And although some decisions, like letting go of JLR, seem short-sighted in hindsight it was absolutely the right thing to do at the time since the idea was to consolidate and recover from the financial crisis of 2008.

With a handful of competitive products in their stables and upcoming launches Herr Butschek & his team will need a clear plan on how to convince potential customers, specially the ones on the fence, to invest in a tata product

Generally the expat contracts are built for 3 to 5 years. Being hired as a CEO, I am expecting the contract to be of a period of at least 5 years unless, the superannuation age at the company is 58. He would surely be an expensive hire for TaMo and I hope, the company reaps the benefits of this association.

Karl Slym left a deep void in TaMo and it would be difficult to fill in his shoes. Question here is - Will Mr. Gunter Butschek be there to unveil a new TaMo product? Auto Expo would be a perfect platform for him to meet industry leaders and announce his arrival.
