Ok, so this was worrying to me, so after booking the vehicle, i test drove the car 2 more times given everyone was hating MSIL for it but the power is adequate. It never feels under powered. Linear acceleration. Below 2000 RPM there is considerable lag but isn't a deal breaker.
Well, wait till you take the car out on highways and try to overtake in a fairly short gap on a two laned, non barricaded highway and you will see it falls short of power in the middle of the overtake. I suggest you don't even try it!

Only one way out - up-shift and keep it in the beginning of the power band or get a remap. The stock tune is not enough.

Don't think so really although the 1.6 will always have an upper hand when it comes to quicker maneuvers while the 1.3 will be a tad slower; not to the extent that you will end up backtracking or shift that stick.

As long as you are in the Turbo band, 2000 RPM, all it takes is a just a tap on the pedal to surge ahead. It is when you have just hit this sweet spot that things can get worse.

Overall the 1.3 would indeed feel underpowered vis-a-vis 1.6 but then once you get the hang of it, you know where you tap the maximum out of it - whether driving solo or with full load.

So its more to be seen as perspectives of driving a 1.6 and then referring to 1.3 here.

Have done enough of 2 lane driving on my 1.3 (not S-Cross though) and can say that it is certainly not a rocket but will not put you in a tight spot that you want to make a U-turn and visit a tuner for a remap :-).

You are spot on as one must've the hang of it to know how to extract maximum power out of it. Almost all overtakes are a planned move and that ways, you'll never have an issue. In my Brezza, which has the same engine-gearbox combo, I've not faced any issue as yet. Yes, when you compare it to 1.6, you're bound to face problem.

I agree that the engine wont excite you but overtake manuvers shouldnt be an issue. This is a pretty free reving motor, pulls all the way to 5.5k rpm.

Drop a gear to keep it in 2k rpm band and you will gwt the job done.

I am not saying this will put a smile on your fave but wont feel underpowered is all i am saying. And i know what i am saying coz

A) I've driven cars with puny petrol engines on the highway and i know what it feels to backoff from trying to push through.

B) My 3rd test drive was with 2 SA's 2 of my friends (full sized adults) and myself and accelrated the pants out of it on an expressway.

The engine only wakes up at 1950 RPM and then it pulls cleanly until 4000 rpm. Nothing exciting though, my new fiesta is more exciting (1.5Tdci 90hp).

All i am saying is. The new scross is a pretty great deal. For the price. Ita feature loaded, practical and comfortable.

Do i wish it had the 1.6mjd? You bet, id happily shell out another 1.5-18L in a heartbeat.

Regarding remap. With shvs in place, can this be remapped? What are the known figures after a sucessful remap?

Purely my observations Parag. And its not just me who has reported this, there are many swift owners who have reported this as well. A remap is not something that you can't live without.

I'm not even comparing a 1.6 vs 1.3. I am just sharing how at 3000 RPM you run out of power and it becomes pointless pushing it further

IMO this takes away effort from the driver and he is working harder in extracting the power out of the engine with the stock tune. A remap surely makes it pull further even after 3000 RPM all the way to 4000 RPM and slightly above it. The car accelerates faster and that definitely makes it easier to drive the car

All said and done, one can always live with the stock tune but I'd certainly not recommend anyone try and close tight gaps with the stock tune.

I have both 1.3 MJD and 1.6 MJD in my garage and have driven them both as stock and tuned . Let me post my observations.

Stock 1.3 MJD
1. It's not underpowered for daily driving.
2. The turbo lag is acceptable.
3. It feels underpowered only after 3000 RPM (not much juice left)
4. 1750 to 3000 RPM is the best zone and good enough for overtaking below 120 kmph.
5. If compared to stock 1.6, 1.3 feels lifeless.

Remapped 1.3 MJD
1. There is good improvement all over the revv band.
2. It is slightly faster in 0-100 timing if compared to stock 1.6. But the 1.6 takes over after 120 kmph.

Remapped 1.6 MJD
I don't have to say anything. No words to compare with stock or tuned 1.3

Sure Sudeep. Between Swift and Ertiga (FGT vs VGT), the Turbo characteristics and the Gear ratios at play make the VGT a better one when on a highway and when it comes to overtaking in the same gear. So if this is coming from Swift owners, I won't contest that all!

3000-4000 is still OK and its after 4 when you see nothing happening at all and that's where you being to wish for more.

Well said and I am sure this will be applicable to most of the drivers till they know the limits of their own cars. No one would really dare to close tight gaps unless well experienced themselves with what they are driving.
