Was about to upload the direct link and found this thread already
This is a great move but wonder how the cops are going to behave on the road

Any pointers to calculate the life time tax after a year?

This is a huge defeat for the KA govt who just wanted to collect money without doing anything in return for the people of Bangalore as usual and this means that its going to be more like the Property Tax or Income Tax SAS. Most likely,No one's gonna come forward after a year and claim to pay Road Tax as everyone can just get a toll receipt and show they had not been in KA recently.

About calculations, you can go to any RTO and they will calculate and inform you based on depreciation.

My thoughts were wandering on the same lines
Wouldn't the officials thought about it already? Surprised that this wasn't raised during the verdict. I am glad it didn't. Maybe they have something else up their sleeves. But when they do find out, I guess this will start all over again with the new agenda.

I'm eagerly waiting for some high handed official to be summoned by the court for contempt for not returning the vehicle and documents. Congrats Waseem, your perseverance paid off, you've got justice for all those unfairly targeted and shut down the trolls on this thread.

@suresh_gs - 93% if less than 2years
Is that on total invoice?
So 334800.00 should be cried out our pockets for a car that was invoiced for 360000.00 as on date?

Am I reading it wrong?

It means 93% of 13%LTT = 12.09% of 3.6 lakhs = Rs.43,524

'No one' is an extreme, but yes there will be a lot of people who will do that.

However saying this I think yearly tax should be introduced or some tax during entry maybe valid for 3 months. If there is re entry within that time they can just show the receipt. In that way every time an out of state car is caught they should have some valid tax receipt or the other, be it quarterly, annually, 5 years or lifetime.

Today I am in Bangalore, which is not my home town. I may decide to move to Chennai after 2 years, and then somewhere else. It is not feasible to change registration every time or buy a new car wherever I go. Imposing a 15 years tax beyond 30 days was really too much. What a new trend comes and while renting a house you need to pay rent for the next 10 years . Or when you buy a house, you have to pay property tax for the next 15 years in one go because it is assumed you will continue staying there.

If a single centralized valid tax across the country cannot be incorporated, then at least options for quarterly, half yearly, yearly, 5 years, lifetime should be incorporated in every state. Have them as options in every entry point of the state. The reason I am saying 'options' because people maybe passing through the state. If a cop catches you, as long as you have a proof like hotel bookings, proof of employment in another state, etc you can let go.

With every year, the invoice value needs to depreciated by 6%. The LTT remains at 14% (for 5-10L segment). So, by the rule, Karnataka would miss ~850 Rs/lakh (invoice value of car), assuming he/she would re-register in KA after an year. The tax payer wouldn't save that much (as the refund from other state would go down as well).

But, hey! Freedom is not a monetary thing to be calculated!

*The report also mentions that the Karnataka Government may again challenge this in the SC via a Special Leave Petition.
