Default March 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

I would like to add to the statistics with figures for segment-wise market share over a period of last month, 3 months and 6 months. These numbers give a fair picture of each vehicles market share within its own segment and whether they are gaining or losing. Plus the percentage market share and overall segment-wise sales are colour-coded to reflect relative position.

Great work as usual

37 Land cruisers - each one at Over Rs 1,35 Crore - why Toyota does not think like a global manufacturer and bring some production locally - perhaps as Lexus LX ? I think they have a similar order book as well given orders from various state government's including Punjab.

Brio's upsurge is kind of a surprise. Except for advertisement conversion, I don't see much of a reason causing this.

Toyota is having a bad time on the lower bread and butter end of the board till the next Innova arrives to increase the footfall to its showroom.

Duster Vs Terrano is little strange indeed. While Duster os gaining customers, Terrano is loosing them.

The Go+ growth also surprises me. Datsun has lot riding on it with the Redi-go launch.

With Tiago being a top looser i.e no dispatches to dealership, is Tata's creating an artificial supply demand mismatch for waiting-period marketing?

Great to see the sales figures for March 2016.

1. Creta numbers just keep me absolutely baffled. It is a good car but surely a bit overpriced for what it offers(coming from a Creta owner).

2. Really happy to see the Kwid numbers growing steadily. Hope they cross the magical 10,000 units mark this month.

3. Ford Ecosport too has regained a substantial numbers after the recent price cuts. It'll be interesting to see if they are able to maintain these numbers over the next few months against the recently launched Vitara Brezza.

4. Maruti Baleno numbers seem to be going down a bit, is it due to production constraints or otherwise?

5. Hyundai i20 surely doesn't seem to have taken any hit from the launch of Baleno and is going as strong as before.

6. VW Polo has re-gained a few numbers but still down from its regular 3k units mark.

7. Sad to see sales figure of Aspire/Figo. I think they both are extremely competent cars but have been let down by the Ford's marketing team.

8. Fortuner sales dwindling down quite a bit. Signs for the new one to be launched anytime soon?

9. Ford Endeavour seems to be doing decently with around 400 units every month for a 25 Lac plus priced car.

10. City and Ciaz seem to be well ahead of the pack in the battle of mid sized sedans. Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid seem to be happy with the lowly 1k/ month sales each. Hyundai should get the new Verna soon, as it will surely give City and Ciaz a good run for its money.

Thanks Aditya for the March sales figures,

Few observations from my side:

* Maruti is maintaining its lead and market share is now at 47% and is expected to get stronger with the already launched Vitara Breeza, Ignis and the slew of new products bound in 2017.

*Vitara Brezza is the new King of the Compact SUV segment. With strong demand, the Vitara Brezza is set to replicate the success of Swift.

* The sales of S-Cross seem to be settling at around 2.5k per month with the increase in Nexa reach.

* Maruti’s just –in –time release of the SHVS variants of Ciaz and Ertiga seemed to have created a strong demand for them . Ciaz's and Ertiga now have a consistent of~ 5k units/ month.

* Ritz too does decent volumes considering the rumour of this being phased out soon.

*Mahindra's sales figures are commendable and it new launches in whatever form , has taken them to the 3rd slot in monthly sales. KUV100 has started well considering its quirky looks , TUV300 seem to settle in the 2,5K range. We'll have to wait and watch to see at what level these stabilise. Mahindra expects the ‘ Ecosport’ sounding NuvoSport to do 18k annually, we will have to wait and see if this will happen.

* On the other side of the Spectrum when compared to Mahindra and Mahindra with delayed launches and an ageing portfolio we see Tata slip to the 6th spot in sales. The new releases like Bolt, Zest showing drop in sales. Tata pins its hopes on the capable Tiago – In a couple of months we will know!

* Volkswagen/Skoda seems to be getting back to their original level with both Polo and Rapid registering an increase in numbers. Hope Ameo can get them more numbers after it is launched.

* Hyundai seems to be riding on its blockbusters Creta and Elite. The one time king of the C segment - Verna is struggling at number 3. A new launch is inevitable.

*In the premium hatchback segment, Hyundai again outnumbers Maruti Baleno’s in domestic sales. Maruti seems to have a hit its production capacity and is doing its balancing act of managing the local and domestic production. This fight is going to get more interesting with Baleno being launched with the BoosterJet engine.

*Fiat has shown some increase in numbers with Punto (571+ 40 Abarth) contributing to it, but far from sustaining a company.

* The honours for this month should go to Renault – for having its KWID taking the company to new heights. Kwid make a grand entry in Top 5 with sales of 9743 units. It is also responsible for Renault’s growth of ~ 65% in F16 results

Some observations from my side:

Chevrolet: Except for Tavera, beat all the other models have failed.

Datsun: Despite low price, they have failed to catch the buyers' eye.

Fiat: Punto is still soldering on. Abarth does not seem to have clicked. Dont see any fortunes reversal soon for linea, abarth.

Ford: Figo and aspire have not succeeded in the manner people expected them to be. Ecosport still going strong.

Honda: All models doing good except Mobilio, which is languishing consistently month on month.

Hyundai: Creta continues to lead and dominate the segment with 8K+ units. Looks like what hyundai lost with the verna, it gained twice that in the creta. i20, i10 all perform as expected.

Mahindra: All models except verito doing good!

Maruti: All models doing well. S-Cross hasnt caught steam even after price cuts.

Renault: Kwid is officially a superstar now with close to 10K units sales in a month.

Skoda: 1000+ units of rapid sold, inspite of the skoda badge.

Tata: Bad! All models going down. Nano & Bolt languishing at three digit figures!

Toyota: All models selling as expected. No surprises.

VW: Polo still sells 2000+ units and vento sells 1000+ units every month consistently. This is inspite of VW's poor reputation and after sales.

Few Observations

Maruti Suzuki
1.Baleno figures are on decline since last 3 months even with 1 lakh plus bookings. Thanks to more focus on exports.
2.S cross has stabilised with 2-2.5k units per month
3.Good start by Brezza as expected.

Hyundai
1.I20 twins going strong with 10k units.
2.Grand i10 is still selling in good numbers even after 2.5 years since launch.
3.Creta is helping Hyundai to get good numbers

Mahindra
1.KUV 100 is a success. 5000 plus units out from factory. It's all about height now
2.Nuvosport numbers are good compared to quanto. Too early to comment, most of them should be TD/display vehicles.

Tata
1.Tata has not dispatched any tiagos last month. Display cars were shipped in February itself. Waiting to check this month's figures.

Honda
Overall, a good month for Honda. City sales have decreased in last few months, thanks to Ciaz SVHS.

Ford
1.Sad to see the fate of Figo twins. It was well priced and still failed to translate into good numbers.
2.Ecosport crosses 4k units after long time, thanks to smart price cut move.

Fiat
Audi and Mercedes sell more than Fiat. 40 units for abarth punto is the highest I guess.

Thanks Aditya.

Some Comments:
  • Nano seems to be on a downward trend again. Looks like it will struggle to manage the competition from the Kwid and its own Zica.

  • Big congrats due for the Kwid and Renault. Approaching the 5 figure mark and in the Top 6. Hope Renault continues to deliver on its sales and service support.

  • Eon not really dropping too many numbers. Hanging on to a steady 5-6000 units.

  • Surprising to see 0 numbers from the Tiago. Considering the launch was just done, would have expected a good amount of dispatches.

  • The other surprise is the Brio. 2000+ units . Been in 3 digits for several months now. Cannot see any reason for the spurt.

  • Kuv100 seems to be on the road to success, 5000+ dispatches is in line with Mahindra's expectations.

  • The curious case and poor run of the Figo continues. Same with the Aspire.

  • Polo back to its 2000+ numbers.

  • Amaze facelift seems to have helped a bit 5000+ numbers. No other surprises in the CS space.

  • City and CIaz continue to be neck and neck in the sedan space.

  • Surprising spurt for the Jetta from mostly 2 digit numbers in the last few months.

  • Ecosport sees its biggest numbers in a long time. Price cut helping. Also with something to compare against, the USP's of the Ecosport being more obvious.

  • TUV300 showing a steady decline. Expect it to struggle more with the Brezza and the Nuvosport

  • S-Cross showing a small but steady increase. Looks like it will be a sleeper hit.

  • Endeavour dispatches not increasing. Ford not taking advantage of the positive vibe it has generated with it.

Great compilation! Was waiting to see the March numbers.

Wonder what is going on with the NEW Ford Endeavour, still struggling at less than 400 units. Fortuner who's numbers have dropped drastically, still outsells the Endeavour.

Fortuner is taking a dive. Time for new Fortuner's inception in Indian market. Ford should increase the dispatches of the new Endeavor and get the most juice out of the newbie.

Great analysis as usual.
I am not clear why this thread doesnt show up on the home page.

Not a single Tata model met 2000 mark. And, Renault overtook Tata and pushed it to 6th position.Consistently poor show by Tata over the years.
Personally I dont think Tiago will alleviate their situation drastically.
