Default Volvo imports XC90 Excellence with 2.0L petrol (407 BHP)!

Volvo has now brought in the XC90 in its top-of-the-line avatar, the mighty XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid.

XC90 T8 is powered by a 2.0 Litre 4-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine.

The 2.0 Litre 4-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine is capable of 320 HP @ 5700 RPM and 400 Nm @ 2200 - 5400 RPM which drives the front wheels. Electrical motors assist with an additional 87 HP and 240 Nm of torque by driving the rear wheels. Thus, a combined power rating of 407 HP.

Power is delivered via an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels with the electronically controlled AWD system.

XC90 T8 boasts a 0-100 km/hr time of merely 5.6 seconds. While in PURE (fully electric) mode, car also delivers a range of upto 41km. All this with a seating capacity of 7 passengers.

Damn! I'm loving Volvo by the minute! First the S90, now this. If we Indians look beyond the badge, these are serious competitors to their German rivals, and look oh-so-cool! The Germans look staid in comparison.

Looks they are in a hurry to launch this in India going by Air Import.

They have planned a variant with 2+2 seats , don't know what all is actually in production apart from the 2 rear seats and a refrigerator if they indeed launch this here it should be perhaps best car for highway cruising

400 BHP from a 2.0L petrol .

Just read on the other thread that the Grand Cherokee has 475 BHP from a mega 6.4L V8 bad boy (link). And here comes Volvo offering 85% of that power with an engine less than 1/3rd the size. Won't sound anywhere as meaty as that 8-cylinder beast, but won't drink as much either.

This petrol should solve all the 'under-powered' complaints of its diesel sister.

Bringing the hybrid is a smart move. Volvo's stunning new designs are bringing it back in contention. Now, having the only 'hybrid' in the segment will give its image a boost.

As someone famous once said, there's no problem in the auto industry that a good car cannot solve. Just look at what the XC90 has done for Volvo in terms of sales & image.

I guess its 407 HP with the Hybrid combined.
The 2.0 ltr engine gives around 330 HP.
I have the xc90 T6 (petrol) with the polestar update and it gives about 360HP from 2 ltr

Is there a reason why a hybrid car cannot be made with a diesel engine?

We test drove the Toyota Camry Hybrid and found the concept useless especially since the hybrid motor is active only up to 40 kmph after which the petrol motor takes over.

While I love the new Volvo's I still do not agree with their decision of going exclusively with 4 cylinder engines especially such small capacity. The engine will be pushed to its absolute limit producing all that power from that displacement and there is no advantage to be had. An Audi Q7 V6 TDi is more efficient than the 2.0 liter turbo diesel in the Volvo and I wonder why all this fuss.

Slightly off-topic but still relevant: Here is Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Volvo XC90 T8: http://www.driving.co.uk/car-reviews...e-inscription/

Quote:
There’s a button on the centre console that allows you to choose whether you’d like to use power made at a power station by burning Russian gas, or power made by crushed prawns to produce oil. Most of the time I used both.
I read the whole thing with Clarkson's voice in my head

A good article on the same. One missed reason could be that USA is the world's largest market for hybrids and diesels simply don't sell there. Where will you recover your investment then?

But that's the beauty of it. During rush-hour traffic, we're under 40 km/h most of the time. Do note that the Camry Hybrid has different driving modes. Let's not take this thread further off-topic and continue on the Camry Hybrid Thread.

How on earth are manufacturers managing to squeeze this much power from really tiny motors!

Even the XC90 is an awesome car, the only issue for Volvo (even for diesel) is that when people are spending big, they do care about engines and all! While I find XC90 a very good package, I still wonder how many prospective buyers will be able to ignore the fact of this vehicle carrying a 4 cylinder engine same size of Coke bottle while making their purchase decisions?

I know I had this in back of my mind always if I was buying one!

Still not close to the 440 bhp Mitsubishi managed to squeeze out from a 2.0L engine for the Evolution X FQ 440 MR.

But unlike the big turbo Mitsubishi which suffered from severe turbo lag, the addition of a super charger along with the turbo charger would ensure more linear performance in the Volvo. The added benefit of an electric motor with all its torque available from idle just makes it all the more better suited to this luxury application.

True, but they are incomparable because the EVO is a purpose-built high performance machine...a factory modified version of a regular sedan that will be bought primarily by enthusiasts. The FQ 440 MR was even more souped up than the regular EVO.

The XC90, on the other hand, is a regular family SUV that will be driven by soccer moms, senior citizens and chauffeurs alike.

It had its huge list of negatives like turbo lag and extremely short service intervals. I remember a TopGear episode where they said the regular 320hp model is 95% of the higher powered model with none of the drawbacks.

True. That's where the supercharging + electric motor definitely seems to have helped the Volvo in extracting that much of horsepower from a 2L motor and still manage to make it useable enough to plonk it in a luxury family car.

That said, is it really producing 400hp from the petrol motor alone?

As per the top gear review here, it is producing 320hp from the engine and 80 odd hp from the electric motor.
