Over 20 lakh cars exported by Hyundai through the Chennai port
The country's second biggest car manufacturer, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), has exported over 2 million cars from Chennai Port in the past decade.
Ever since the Korean auto giant entered into an exclusive agreement with the Chennai Port Trust back in 2006, HMIL has been using the Chennai Port as the sole hub of it's small car exports to all over the world. The Chennai Port has been instrumental in HMIL retaining its top exporter status for over a decade.
The company has been using the Chennai Port since 1996, when it came into existence in India. Exports started to ship outside from 2000 onwards, and prior to the exclusive agreement between the two in 2006, HMIL had already exported 3 lakh cars.
To commemorate this occasion of a "decade of partnership" between HMIL and the Chennai Port Trust, Shri. Cyril C. George, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust, handed over a cheque of Rs.19.69 crores towards refund of wharfage charges for the year 2015-16 to Shri. YK Koo, Managing Director, M/s. Hyundai Motors India Ltd.
Commenting on the occasion Shri. YK Koo, MD, M/s. HMIL:
