@slamnos - Looks like one digit is missing in sales volume of 26-50 list, please correct the same.

Thanks for a great analysis. Hope everyone in the industry and govt have takeaways from your useful post. Not to nitpick, but you have mentioned Goa as a city?

Just like how NCR is a conglomeration of "Delhi + Noida + Gurgaon + Faridabad + Ghaziabad" We must presume that Goa will be "Panjim+Vasco+Madgaon" as the state has a smaller geographical area compared to other states.

Hi All,

Does anybody know how we decide which cars fall in a specific city?

For eg - For Trivandrum, there is KL-01(East fort/Thampanoor till pattom), KL-16 (Attingal), KL-22 (Pattom to Kazhakuttom Technopark area), KL20 (Neyyatinkara) and there maybe more. Will all these cars fall within Trivandrum city. Earlier this used to be one RTO. Ideally they should and but I don't think it does based on the counts that we see here. So the list might not be very accurate.

This should be dealer sales numbers from Automobile companies and may not be based on registrations.

When the list was extended to 50, it covered all important towns in Kerala. No wonder per capita car ownership in Kerala is 3 times its nearest competitor.

I am happy to see that year-on-year sales in both Bombay and Pune have decreased. I hope it points to the fact that there is an absolute dearth of parking space in the cities and the arterial roads are narrow and perpetually clogged. Till the infrastructure dramatically improves, I see this trend continuing. For many people in Bombay - a car is a matter of convenience rather a status symbol unlike in other parts of the cities. You often see businessmen taking the local train if their work happens to be in congested areas.

Fantastic information there. Gives a lot of insight of who, where and how much in the auto industry. I liked the Top cars and top cities matrix and its quite associable with the cars we see on the road. I was actually surprised to see Maruti having a lower market share in big cities. Now we can safely say that they are sailing high only because of the non urban presence and geographical penetration only.

Consider the Delhi region, where the maximum sale is. While Maruti's pan-India market share is 44%, its share in Delhi is 47.7%! So, it's not because of just the non-urban presence. Cost, fuel efficiency, service, spare parts availability... the reasons are many.

Do you think Honda / Toyota will sell just like Maruti if they had 1500 showrooms across the country?

The numbers for the state of Kerala are alarming. We are talking about a state that is much smaller than Tamil Nadu. Considering the state has good public transport and inter town transport network via road, trains and a ferry service, this does come as a surprise. The road infrastructure is probably the worst too and by this I don't mean bad roads. There are no roads to support the volume of vehicles.

In Delhi, the reason for higher sale of Maruti cars are because they are mostly second cars at home, with more aspirational brands like Honda offering cars at affordable price they are becoming primary choice in Metros/Tier-1.

However in smaller towns the perception of higher maintenance associated with global brands are overriding their decision and hence they play safe by buying Maruti, Tata & Mahindra in their respective segments

I think Toyota will sell a higher number of Etios and Innovas if they had a deeper presence. Not sure about honda. The others might not come close to Maruti if they develop their presence, but it will definitely improve sales to some extent at least.

I am not saying that geographical penetration is the only thing in favour of maruti. Its one of the most significant factors apart from brand image and reliability and ease of maintenance.

Makes one wonder where the road tax collected is being spent on in Bangalore. The traffic situation continues to get more and more dire by the day but the unscientific planning and management continues.

There is a serious need to divide the city into several grids, identify bottlenecks and come up with quick traffic easing solutions to ease the situation in this bursting-at-the-seams city.

Otherwise the relentless march of capital will leave Bangalore behind if everyone continues to get stuck in traffic for 3-4 hours everyday.
