Default SsangYong Rexton recalled over faulty rear driveshaft

Mahindra has recalled the SsangYong Rexton SUV in India due to a probable fault in its rear driveshaft. The company hasn't announced the exact number of units affected under this recall, but it covers all vehicles produced in and before September 2014.

The company has announced that their authorized dealerships will be getting in touch with Rexton customers across the country. All expenses related to inspection, rectification and replacement will be taken care of by the company.

The Rexton is the first and currently the only vehicle sold under the SsangYong brand in India. It was launched in October 2012, and is powered by a 2.7-litre diesel engine, that is offered in two states of tune - 162 BHP and 184 BHP. It is priced in the range of Rs. 21 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Look at it the other way around buddy. They identified a problem and were able to trace it back to more than two years. Post September 2014 vehicles don't seem to have that problem - brighter side is they identified the faulty production tenure and are putting it right

If post 2014 cars don't have the issue, does it not mean that folks knew about the problem 2 years ago itself?

Sorry I'm just trying to understand how all this works.

It could be that the driveshafts started showing signs of trouble only once they're 2 - 3 years old. Could be due to metal fatigue.

Why post 2014 cars aren't affected? I don't know. Maybe the supplier / specification / something else changed.

There's a lot of variables when it comes to production. Many things could have happened...

They might have spotted a small issue in Sept 2014, and fixed it -- without knowing it would lead to a more major issue later on.

They might have spotted a small issue in Sept 2014, and fixed it -- knowing fully well that it would lead to a more major issue later on. (and either decided to ignore it, or act on it later).

The part vendor could have had some temporary problem with their sourced raw material or tools, which was either not known to them, or not disclosed to Ford.

There's a lot of possibilities - but the bottom line is that they are doing a recall, and that's a welcome move.
