Default Rumour: Honda to build 1.6L diesel in India...for exports!

Honda Cars India to export 1.6L diesel engines to Thailand for first time. India and Europe are strong diesel markets for Honda and therefore it decided to make India the manufacturing base for it.
This powerplant will be manufactured at the Tapukara facility in Rajasthan.

Quote:
Another first to the carmakers credit will be making the complete 1.6L diesel engine in India as currently it does not have any product that is powered by this specific diesel motor in the local market.
Quote:
this engine isn’t going to power any of the Honda’s India line-up of cars and this motor is only for export markets

The 1.6 engine has two states of tune. A 118bhp and 300Nm turbocharged version, as well as a twin turbo version with 160bhp of power and 350Nm of torque.

The latter sounds interesting indeed.

The link says that the motor is only for export markets, however the CRV thread speculated this engine for the Indian launch.

Nope, the twin-turbo oil burner won't be for our market.

We will be getting the 118HP/300Nm one in the Indian-spec CR-V next year.

That will be a serious handicap. 300Nm and 1.6L diesel are all small figures for a seven seater. Competion like Hyundai Tucson and VW Tiguan offer far superior diesel engines.

Infact, S Cross 1.6 has similar power and better torque figures. CRV would be two segments above it. Doesn't make sense and hence I believe we would get the twin turbo version itself.

They have been testing the new CR-V with the 118HP motor inside their plant premises for awhile now, so it's pretty much a given that the lower tune one will be for India.

Honda will be targeting higher mileage figures and a lower price tag to be competitive in the Tucson/Compass segment, now that it's set that the CR-V offered here will have the added option of 7 seats.

The twin-turbo version will be exported to Thailand. AFAIK, that's the only ASEAN country which gets the twin-turbo CR-V.

If the 1.6l diesel is being made in India, naturally the cost of production is an advantage.

If this turns out to be a much better refined engine than the 1.5 on the City, why wouldn't Honda consider it for the Indian market.

Production constraint?

A 118bhp on a SUV that size?! Giving the 1.4 on Corolla a competition on silliness?

At a time when manufacturers are moving away from diesels, I find it strange that Honda has the need to produce more diesel engines.

I know they have the infrastructure required to produce engines, but I'd be asking myself whether I really need to use it.

I hope what you're saying isn't true. The CR-V will compete with the Tucson and overlap with the top variants of the XUV 500.
Surely, 160 BHP is the minimum amount of power it needs.

Honda shoudn't even bother selling the diesel if they're planning to sell the 118 BHP state of tune.

Well it looks like the era of performance Honda's are well and truly over.

None of their new cars are exciting in any particular way - though I do love the new Civic - am not a big fan of the overdone exterior design.

What will Honda price this CRV at?

Certainly not less than 30 L on-road for a 118 BHP engine?

Granted the new interiors appear to be far more premium and it is a 7 seater but still!

Is there anything special about these new Honda diesels that will give VW, Fiat or Toyota diesels sleepless nights? Will be great if anyone has any info on this.

Keep Dreaming Honda!

Just thinking out loud. This engine has 50% more torque than the 1.5L . How sweet would it be if Honda were to create low volume 'GT" editions of the City, Jazz & WR-V ( la VW GTs)? The Polo & Vento have proven there is a market for variants with strong engines. Even if these aren't mass market, they expand the customer base and bring a certain coolness to the brand.

Honda did it earlier with the 1st-gen Honda City Vtec that had a fan following, despite its steep Rs. 1.xx lakh premium for merely 6 BHP more. Does the Honda of today have that mojo?

If a diesel's size goes over 1.5L, the tax bracket goes up (even in GST). But then, Hyundai has managed to sell the Verna 1.6L just as well all these years.

Truly. Honda will be doing a 'Corolla Altis 1.4' in the premium SUV segment.

They've been late to the diesel game, no doubt. But there is still a healthy market for diesels - they haven't exactly vanished. It's better to have a diesel than not have one at all, even in today's market (unless you're a 2-cylinder Celerio diesel).

I doubt if the present chassis of these cars can take that kind of spirited driving even if the engine matches with Germans, I may be wrong though.

If one looks at the torque figures for the petrol versions of CRV, even 300 Nm in the low power diesel is way higher. It might not be a performer but will be able to pull the SUV without much problem.
