Guess Toyota doesn't want to dilute the Lexus brand with such an open show of brotherhood. Lexus seems to be operating as independent as possible in the Indian context.

Not quite sure about that. Lexus doesn’t have any dedicated/exclusive service center. It’s shared with Toyota.

Also, Toyota’s tries and tested reliability is one Lexus’s biggest USP.

Expect the prices to be above 1Cr if the price difference between Fortuner and Alphard in other markets can be taken as a reference. This is for those who doesn't like a luxury sedan/suv but needs all the luxury without brand value.

Here in Singapore I can see that the price pretty much same as the Fortuner - in the vicinity of SGD 165K, 150 bhp 2.5L 4cyl petrol. Had it as a Uber drive last weekend; more like spacious and a bit more luxurious Innova. Should work well for hotels for their airport runs.

However, both Qualis and its replacement Innova were sold to the cab market. But the new Yaris in its Petrol avatar surely will not be sold to the cab market and also taxi segment mostly prefer a compact sedan versus the full size sedan.

So why kill Etios which is one of the leading models in the taxi segment. Also, the new Platinum Etios launched last year still entices the private buyers.

This price is from Toyota singapore website, and the difference between them is SGD48000 (INR24lacs approx).
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2018-alphard_fortuner.jpg
Here if the Alphard is going to be imported the void will increase because the Fortuner is locally manufactured.

PS:
No diesel variant of fortuner on sale in Singapore? Website says only 1 variant available for both Fortuner and Alphard.

Vellfire is a few grands cheaper than Alphard in Singapore. Both are same except for how they look inside and out. The Alphard shown at Auto Expo has black interiors like the Vellfire; and has larger engine compared to what Alphard and Vellfire comes with in SG.

PPS: Its the Previa minivan which is priced close to Fortuner in singapore, still a few grands more expensive than Fortuner

We shouldn't be comparing the absolute change in price in Singapore with that of India because Singapore has atrocious taxes on cars to promote public transport culture.

The more realistic way of comparing it would be the % difference.
The Alphard is 28.5% costlier than the Fortuner in Singapore.

The other factor to consider is whether they will manufacture it in India or not. If they don't do it, it's going to have the same fate as Prius and Prado where people buy it as a status symbol rather than its actual value which doesn't align with what a typical Toyota customer in India is.

Exactly. If Alphard is 28.5% pricier than Indian Fortuner the price here for the Alphard will be near 1Cr or a few grands above 1Cr.

If this is going to be imported and with the 3.5L V6 (or even 2.5L petrol) engine toyota just wants to sell it like Prado, like an alternative for low slung luxury sedans. They are not offering a luxurious alternative to Crysta. I don't think Alphard comes with a Diesel anywhere its sold. I do not think Toyota will manufacture this in India, this is not suited to Indian mass market and for that there's the Innova.

Agree to the logic, but similar things were said about the Innova when the Crysta came out.

Toyota didn't seem to care. Though Crysta is also available to the cab market - the numbers have been much lesser than the earlier version, especially due to the premium pricing IMO.

Also for the Yaris - I feel a diesel will be launched later once the petrol gets established.

Totally agree, but funny how it works.

We complain about the atrocious taxes in Singapore. But with a direct currency conversion- they are paying 24L above Fortuner and we would mostly end up paying twice of that!

The ex-showroom price for Fortuner Petrol in India is between 26.53 and 28.22 lakhs
If we add the 28.5% on top of that, the extrapolated pricing for alphard would be in the range of 34.1 - 36.3 lakhs. Add road tax and insurance on top of that it should be @ 50 lakhs on road. And it should sell in decent numbers at that price.

If they take the make outside India approach for Alphard, the potential market will be zero and the product will be in the showroom as space fillers just for the sake of it like the Prado and Prius.

Thanks, I checked on the parallel importers price list; here the parallel market for Toyota/Honda is as strong as the authorized dealers. Don’t go by the price difference with direct currency conversion – here a Fortuner costs around 80 lakhs INR

OT: This is predominantly a petrol market; diesels are mainly for the taxis. Off late a few European brands are come up with diesel options. For e.g.; the BMW 1-series is sold only in the 116d 3cyl option, and then the immediate next option is the maniac M140i.

Instead of wasting time with the Alphard, they can bring in the Sienta at the price point the Innova occupied earlier ( the 2nd gen - because the most recent Innova before the Crysta had already become quite expensive over the years ). The Sienta is very spacious with a fairly practical 3rd row and some amazing space management features to release good boot space also. This could easily be slotted slightly above the upcoming Ertiga and create a great segment for itself

I had no idea about parallel market so checked the official one. Fortuner pricing there seems reasonable when compared to Vios. One fortuner for the price of less than two Vios(es?).

Yes true. My reply was based on the assumption that they will not manufacture it locally. With only petrol engines for Alphard, and the segment it is in, and TKM being TKM chance of local manufacture of this is really really low.

In their home market, Toyota sells the Alphard 2.5L Hybrid for prices slightly higher than the Prado Diesel (with the 2.8GD engine).

So I do not realistically see a sub 100L price for the Alphard Hybrid.

Good news for you, it will be priced at 91,60

I could have also thought about picking one, had they given a 6 cylinder petrol engine and 6 speed gearbox. Old 4 cylinder diesel and 5 speed gearbox just does not sound correct in 2018
