Always the tacho, and a fair idea of the torque-graph of the engine.

For engine notes can be very deceptive, esp in most american cars that make more sound than the power they deliver.

a tacho or any meter could go wrong or give wrong info but the engine grunt from the firewall and exhaust note can transmit perfect signals for the next shift and even for a sudden gear change from top to 2nd without locking the wheels.

For me, I cant take my eyes off the road even for a second especially in Chennai and hence dont look at the tachometer. I rely purely on the engine pull and the feel of it in addition to the sound which is barely audible. But now in the US there is no need for that as I am driving an automatic and hence no work for my left foot at all.

Normal driving..I prefer to shift when I feel there is adequate torque for the next gear, cuz most times I hardly can hear the engine sound with the kind of music I listen to. But when I really want to rip the car, I prefer using a combo of engine sound & tacho.

Cheers!!!

While driving normally I shift up using the engine sound as a benchmark since I don't rev more than 3-4k usually. But when I'm pushing the car I use the tacho 'cause I like to redline her atleast in the first 3 gears atleast
