The point is that this small car from TATA will be a very functional car. Being a small car and small on price it cannot be a safe car. Hence it cannot be a family car. It can be only used for limited radius driving. Being small it will be easy to park. My guess is that it would be a good 2nd/3rd car for utility driving in a mini city eg: Gurgaon. I am sure it will be unsafe to drive this on the highway. It can also appeal to the youngsters in a metro city. But I doubt that. They will look at style, speed & peformance. So who will buy this car????

Default Bajaj has hi-tech small car in pipeline

Two wheeler major Bajaj Auto today said it was developing a concept for a small car but ruled out being a competitor to Tata's much touted Rs one lakh car.

"We are experimenting with the concept of a small car but it is not a cheap car," Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, Bajaj Auto said.

It is a high technology car being developed through in-house research and development and seeks to redefine small cars, he said.

Bajaj categorically ruled out its concept car being a competitor to the Tata's Rs one lakh car saying: "We are striving to be a good two-wheeler manufacturer and we have no intention of getting into something which we are not capable of...that is manufacturing of cars."

He said the company's concept small car would be a distinctive product and "it will be more like a Pulsar on four-wheels".

Default Bajaj’s first car to be priced between Rs. 2-5 lakhs

Bajaj is one of the leading two wheeler manufacturer in the Indian market. The company has now announced their plans to get into the four wheeler segment by launching a compact car.

The car is not likely to be cheap and would be priced between Rs. 2-5 lakhs. They plan to showcase it at the upcoming Auto Expo show in January next year.

Bajaj describes their planned product as a “four-wheel passenger vehicle” and it is not going to challenge the upcoming Rs. 1 lakh car from Tata Motors.

Bajaj’s Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj spoke about this upcoming product: “We are aiming to come up with a concept passenger vehicle by January 2008 and if the response is good, it will take us three years to go in for commercial production.”

He added: “The engine, transmission and platform that we build will be the basis for our passenger vehicle.”

The company also is planning on a commercial launch of a four-wheel goods carrier by 2009. Bajaj added that they are entering this small car segment in the Indian market considering not many companies are developing products to cater this market section. Except for Maruti and Tata Motors, few companies have definite products to cater to this segment of the market.

Similar to Bajaj, Kinetic also once made a small car that they had on display at the Delhi Auto Expo. I do not remember the year though!

Kinetic had shown their City car concept alongwith a few other companies around those times. I think it was either 1996 or 98. None of them ever saw light though.

Thats good news, I feel Renault will manufacture small car alliance with Bajaj while big cars like Logan and MPV with Mahindra since later is concentrating more on Big cars rather than small cars.

Regards,

Ravi.

Yup, according to the Economic Times, Bajaj & Renault could be natural allies since Renault's other Indian Partner, M&M doesnt believe in the ultra low cost product philosophy.

Mahindra & Mahindra is more interested in making a mark in the global SUV market & doen't think that a low margin small car is an area for core competence.

Also Renault has experience now in the "low cost" vehicles segment with the Logan, particularly in Europe.

Renault head Carlos Ghosn has also expressed his admiration for the 'frugality' of Indian engineering.

Plans?? What plans?? IIRC, there were only threats.

Sorry, Bajaj, you need to provide better evidence that you people have concrete intentions, backed up by plans in place. For a start, you will have to notify the stock exchange(s) about the plans, if they exist.

Default bajaj seems to have a decent option

I recently caught up with this test car on the outskirts of Pune. Looks very simillar to the snaps of Nano. On enquiring I was told this the Bajaj car. Looks good and runs preety well. I saw it crusing easily at speeds greater than 80km/h

Ummm...that's some kind of news and nice pic. But the challenge remains for them is to maintain the A**. They have to either go in for a tie up or open the dealer ships which has all the 3S's.
