Pricing sanity can only be restored if Skoda cuts prices across all models by 3 lakhs. Passat value (price) should be then be bought to Laura levels.

If they can position Skoda as a luxury brand in India, why not VW? Their recent marketing activities with socialites et all make it clear who they are gunning for.

Volkswagen has currently one dealer in India - Kashyap Vehicle Works Private Limited located in New Delhi and Noida (Uttar Pradesh) with representatives in Punjab and Hyderabad. We are currently in the process of setting up two more dealers - one in each of the two cities - Mumbai and Bangalore

They can position VW as a luxury brand. Would be really great. but they do have Audi also. Where will Audi go? I am completely sure Audi wont sell if it outprices BMW and mercedes-Benz.

Looks like they want to die an early death in India too...
They can't figure out how to co-habitat their brands in India. They think Indians are stupid and will believe Skoda, VW and Audi all as luxury brands. Too bad

If Skoda, Audi, VW are all positioned as luxury brands then which brand will take the VFM tag from their stable? Lamborghini or Buggati

Market response will probably bring down Passats price in camry's range. Then maybe Audi will position its offering at around 26-28. THat may seem to be logical.

They think India is a obnoxiously rich country. Everyone is flush with funds and spending 20l for a car is no big deal...thats why there is no need for a VFM offering. They can easily sell a car at double the price here and no one will blink.

Their short term goal: Sell 1 lakh Passats in India.

Why is everyone after Passat's pricing? I think it's more value for money then the Camry. For almost the same price, you can get a diesel engine with DSG transmission. If Toyota can sell a Camry at Lexus prices and get away with it why can't VW sell a VW at Audi prices?

Well, not really after Passat's pricing but after VW's strategy for India.

if you compare Toyota to VW, both started with products in sub-10L range and those appealed to masses (OHC and Qualis/Corolla). Also, there was minimal competition to these cars @ that time. They sold in large #s and helped establish the brands in india. Now, VW is entering the market which is heading towards recession and quite a few manufacturers are well established as well as launching equally good products. They prey, how will VW garner large sales to become a strong brand in India?

They are not cost leaders, not offering a different product and nothing unique about their cars. I think they may end up as another fiat or opel.

The pricing and the whole approach of VAG group from Day 1 reveals typical German attitude towards India.

VW has made it clear that they plan to launch a small car in India as early as next year unlike Toyota that is still suggesting that their small car may be here by 2010! Why then is VW's India strategy is under fire? Let's have patience and let them first finish construction of their new plant. They are building a plant that can build 100K cars a year, surely, they must have some strategy in place to achieve that. It's too early to flame them now.
