The engine and transmission unit will be commissioned by April 2008 with local production to commence a month later. Early engine and gearbox packs will be imported, not just for the Palio but also for Tata Motors’ Indica evolution, code-named the X1, which is tentatively scheduled for a March 2008 release.

There is a mention in this article, that TATA has reserved the largest space in the Auto Expo, so maybe they are considering unveiling this along with the 1-lac wonder.

It is a cost saving exercise meant to have a same console for RH and LH drive.

And it isn't disturbing at all from driver's POV. Probably takes couple of minutes of drive to get acclimatised. And if you drive the car regularly, you would infact find other cars with a 'normal' console location bit disturbing' to drive. My wife finds it odd (only couple of minutes, though ) driving our Indica on weekends, after having driven the SPark all other times.

My Wife always complains about Speedo meter's position while driving any car. As it blocks road view few % (even with a pillow underneeth as she is average indian short girl).

She says it reduces her confident when driving any new car. She welcomed the Spark's move and excited to hear Indica has that.

Anyway If 1 lakh car is not botherd about center console for cost cutting, why a big (mid) size hatch to worry about that?

no scientific concept here bro. . .its just a design element. I mean i would WANT my info display right before my eyes, and not somewhere in the middle of the dashboard, where i have to literally take my eyes of the road to check some information out (viz : amnt of petrol, speed. . )

and to proove that the console is not a 'disturbance' all new age cars have heads up display on the driver side. . not on some other side.

This maynot be a cost saving, you can find the similar design in europian cars and japaneese tooo (Toyota Yaris). Since this car design coniserd the europian market they might have adopted this.

Don't think we'll have a sedan from the X1 platform this year.

However, TATA is rumoured to be bringing out a notch version of the Indigo!

The notch version of Indigo will be something to look out for. Wonder how they are going to price the new version. If priced right, this could turn out to be a real hot seller.

Guyz just spotted this one in pune, definitely is the new indica, although similar pictures have been posted earlier, this one is well finished, paintwork was top notch, pearl finish, wherever visible, all panels in place. In short, maybe it was the final package. It is so big, at first when i saw it in the ORVM i thought it was some mid sized car. Sorry, but just managed one photo The engine sounded too rough though.
