You might want to check again. On a track handling matters most coupled with a good engine, not necessarily the quickest accelerating car which handles so so. Cedia handles in a totally different league amongst cars under the 12L bracket. Hardly anything comes close, if anything does at all.

When the BMW M5 was launched way back in 1984, it created quite a stir among car enthusiasts. Didn't the OHC VTEC have a similar kind of response in India when it was launched? Wasn't it the quickest accelerating car ( 0-100 kmph in under 10 sec ) being manufacture in India at the time of it's launch?

I think the hype has grown much larger ever since its been discontinued. I honestly cannot recollect the kind of drool-drool about it when it was launched but I'm getting old & my memory could be failing me . I think the fact that (to an average enthusiast) it was more affordable in its second hand avatar had something to do with that

Visnhu, I know what you are trying to point at. But the M5 is also know for its raw power, safety features, latest technology and most importantly brilliant handling. Which the OHC vtec lacks, what it has is a good engine (that too detuned for India) and good looks and thats about it. A car that can rev to 7100 like a rocket but handles so so cannot be compared to or called the INDIAN M5. Its a bunch of a lot of stuff that have made the M5 what it is. Not just the engine. Closest contender could be the Cedia provided it comes with the Mivec engine. Can't think of any other car....

Baleno is referred to as the "poor man's skyline" . Remember?

I'm not comparing itto the M5. and when i said that i named my car M5, i din't mean that i was going to put an M5 badge on the car or something stupid like that. i just pet named my car as M5.

vv ur point is well taken but apart from the direct comparison where the vote from most people has been a "no", i think even if u extend ur line of thinking as the first performance sedan in india .... it still does not compare with the M5

the M5 anyway was not the first performance sedan by any standard globally also...

i think it would help if some seniors put in

1) what is the exact history of the M5
2) how did it evolve to its present form
3) who were its peers ( performance/price wise also )
4) were there any pathbreaking technologies the M5 brought in to the table

similary one needs to put in a similar set of attributes for the honda VTEC

AND THEN COMPARE

of course the absolutes may not match but if WHAT THE VTEC did to the indian performance market is similar to what the M5 did to the global market - THEN probablly u cud still vote a YES

BUT FROM MY limited knowledge of M5 history and VTEC history i still dont think they can be treated in the same vein.....

The ANSWER is a Flat NO! I would never call the OHC VTEC the Indian BMW M5! The OHC VTEC is nothing compared to the BMW M5! BMW M5 is miles and grades ahead of the OHC VTEC.

Jaggu, I second you! I love the power of the 1.6 ROCAM more than the OHC VTEC.

This is an offence to me!!! Calling the above a driver's car? Yeah right, You must refer the Omni, 800 etc as personal driving cars.

Uhmm.. Okay I got you now. Sorry about it. But wait, if you're talking about the situation, then how about the fact that the OHC VTEC got discontinued and a huge difference was made in looks of the NHC, and also the VTEC wasn't continued in the NHC, while the M5 just got minor facelifts but retained the same engine.

I don't know if I'm able to tell out the exact point I mean to say here..

I see what VV is saying. In the European marketplace, the M5 originally represented a surprisingly fast and able sedan - one that was very stealthy, and much faster than people would expect, seeing it's pedestrian appearance.

What you have to remember is that in Europe, a 5-series is/was just another boring sedan, and the M5 was only distinguishable from a "cooking" 518i or 524td by the enthusiast. This ability to fly under the radar, combined with the capacity of the M5, was unprecedented and started a whole new category. Sounds as if the OHC VTEC was just as surprisingly fast, at least when introduced. Of course, an original, fifteen-year-old M5 is still faster than most sedans available (and certainly faster on track) and it seems as if time has already caught up with the OHC VTEC?

Now I don't know exactly what place the OHC VTEC occupied in the Indian marketplace, but I will vote a "maybe".

I don't think you quite understood the meaning of a driver's car. It does not mean a chauffeured car, what it means is a car thats a "pleasure" to drive. Its a "driver's" car in that context. One where you, me enjoy driving it as opposed to the boring other cars you wish not to drive. Good handling, power are some of the attributes in making a car a "driver's" car.
